Analysis: Larry Elder is on his way to nearly matching Arnold Schwarzenegger’s share of the vote in the last California recall election, but that’s just about where comparisons to 2003 end.
In fact, in a post-mortem on Wednesday, some Republicans are even blaming Elder for the shellacking that the pro-recall side took, handing Governor Gavin Newsom ample material to work with given Elder’s long history in the world of Am radio bombast.
Ron Nehring, the former chairman of the California Republican Party, said at a Sacramento Press Club event that Elder was “a life preserver thrown to Gavin Newsom.” Just as ballots were being mailed to all of the state’s registered voters, Newsom’s side was seizing on Elder’s past statements, from opposition to a minimum wage to comments about women.

If Gov. Gavin Newsom is recalled next week, the entertainment industry will lose a valuable ally in Sacramento.
The industry’s top concern at the Capitol is the film and TV tax credit, which provides a 20-25% discount on eligible production spending in the state. In July, Newsom signed a two-year expansion of the program, bringing it to $420 million a year, and indicated he would support making that increase permanent.
With the exception of former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the leading Republican candidates to replace Newsom all oppose the film incentive.
Radio host Larry Elder, who has led in the replacement polls since entering the race in July, has long been against giving tax credits to Hollywood. He sees the program as “hypocritical,” given Democrats’ support for higher corporate tax rates on other industries.

Talk show host Larry Elder, considered one of the leading candidates to potentially unseat Gov. Gavin Newsom in the upcoming recall election, will not be prosecuted for alleged domestic abuse and gun violations.
Los Angeles prosecutors declined today to pursue his former fiancée’s allegations that he brandished a gun and engaged in domestic abuse six years ago.
There is a one-year statute of limitations on misdemeanor cases, so prosecutors could not pursue the accusations made by Alexandra Datig, who split with Elder in 2015.
Datig claimed in media interviews that Elder brandished a .45-caliber revolver during a 2015 argument about breaking up. She also claimed Elder pushed her in 2014.
“From the beginning, Larry has said that he will stay focused on the issues that animated over 1.7 million Californians to petition for a recall of Gavin Newsom,” Elder’s campaign said in a statement.
The recall election will take place on Sept.

A Sacramento judge ordered that radio host Larry Elder’s name be placed on the Sept. 14 gubernatorial recall ballot, rejecting Secretary of State Shirley Weber’s claim that he filed incomplete information about his taxes.
“California judge rules that the election law Elder allegedly violated Did Not Even Apply to a recall election And even if it did, Elder “Substantially Complied.” I will be on the ballot,” Elder wrote on Twitter shortly after the ruling.
Superior Court Judge Laurie Earl ruled that the requirement that candidates provide tax returns applied to direct primary elections, not a recall. “I don’t find that Mr. Elder was required to file tax returns at all,” Earl said at a hearing.
Elder announced last week that he was entering the race, but his name was not among Weber’s initial list of 41 candidates to qualify for the ballot. She is expected to release a final list later on Wednesday.

California Governor Gavin Newsom will face a recall election on September 14, 2021.
That date was announced on Thursday by the state’s Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis. Kounalakis said in a statement that Sept. 14 was a “fair and reasonable date,” but also noted that “the window of time from which I could select a date was narrow.”
“It has always been my intention to choose an election date that gives election officials and the public ample time to ensure a smooth election with broad participation,” she said. “Conducting this election on September 14 fulfills my statutory requirements, and provides the time needed for officials to prepare and inform voters.”

Reed Hastings, the co-ceo of Netflix, has shelled out a whopping $3 million to a fund opposed to the recall of California Governor Gavin Newsom.
The contribution was reported to the California Secretary of State on Thursday afternoon, and is the largest single contribution to date to the Stop The Republican Recall. (Hat tip: Politico).
Hastings, a longtime donor to Democrats, actually contributed $7 million in 2018 to the California Charter Schools Association’s effort to elect former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in the year’s gubernatorial primary. But Villaraigosa lost to Newsom and Republican John Cox, who advanced to the general election.
Stop The Republican Recall includes other major funding from the California Democratic Party, Professional Engineers in California Government Pecg-pac and Stewart Resnick.

Despite national media attention and name recognition, Caitlyn Jenner drew low support in the most recent Uc Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll, their first since she got into California’s gubernatorial race.
The poll showed that Jenner got just 6% support, behind Republicans Kevin Faulconer and John Cox, who each received 22%, according to the Los Angeles Times, a sponsor of the survey.
The poll was conducted online to 10,289 registered voters, with a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points. Participants were polled from April 29 to May 5. The latter date is when Jenner gave her first major TV interview, on Fox News’ Hannity. She sat down with CNN for another interview on Monday.
The results generally were good news for California Governor Gavin Newsom. While the recall has passed the signature threshold to get on the ballot, likely this fall, just 36% of California voters said they were in support of ousting Newsom from office,...

Republican gubernatorial candidate, businessman John Cox, debuted his campaign Tuesday in Sacramento, but his live political stunt involving a bear drew heavy criticism.
Cox spoke to reporters in California’s capital about the need to replace Gavin Newsom, whom he referred to as a “beauty,” with himself, “a beast.” The speech was punctuated with a disinterested 1,000-pound bear literally lumbering around behind Cox.

Caitlyn Jenner, who announced her plans to run in California’s gubernatorial recall election, will sit down with Fox News’ Sean Hannity for an interview that will be telecast on May 5.
Fox News said that the interview, to take place at her Malibu home, will be her first with a national outlet since announcing her candidacy. This will be her second interview with the network.
Jenner is targeting California Governor Gavin Newsom’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and the state’s regulatory and tax environment in her campaign, but the decision to do Hannity could reflect a desire to shore up support on the right in an expected crowded field of candidates.
Jenner’s run already has generated considerable publicity, something that could give her an advantage over Republican rivals who also are running in the recall election. They include San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, businessman John Cox and former congressman Doug Ose.

Organizers of the campaign to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom have cleared the threshold of the number of valid signatures needed to trigger a vote later this year, but it is not yet official.
Secretary of State Shirley Weber’s office said on Monday that “the requisite number of valid signatures has been reported to our office to initiate the recall of Governor Gavin Newsom. However, county elections officials must continue to verify the validity of any remaining signatures and must report the final signature verification on April 29, 2021.” The number of valid signatures stands at 1,626,042, about 100,000 more than needed. Almost 1.5 million are needed to make the ballot.
The next step will be a 30 day period in which voters may request that county officials remove their names from recall petitions. If there are still enough valid signatures, it then goes to a cost estimate, and then a review and comment period before certification.

California Governor Gavin Newsom was half an hour late to his own party on Monday. Scheduled to speak at a Covid-19 news conference at 11:30 pm, he didn’t appear until noon. That’s unlike the governor, but this is an unusual time for him.
Newsom is the target of a statewide recall effort, and activists working to put his removal to a vote say that they have garnered 1.3 million of the estimated 1.5 million signatures needed. TV ads targeting Newsom are set to hit this week.
Also on Monday, a new Republican challenger, businessman John Cox, who Newsom beat handily in the last election, declared his intention to challenge the governor in the proposed recall election if it qualifies for the ballot, or says he will run against Newsom if he seeks a second term in 2022. Cox again threw his hat into the ring on Monday with an ad painting himself as an outsider.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s office says there’s no truth to claims the Republican abruptly left an interactive Comic-Con exhibit hosted by Amazon Prime, after learning he would be portrayed as an “immigrant.”

Did an immigration storyline cause Republican San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer to run out of Amazon Prime Video’s Comic-Con activation this week? According to “Carnival Row” star Orlando Bloom, that’s exactly what happened.
At Amazon’s “Carnival Row” panel, Bloom told the audience that Faulconer stopped by the Prime Video activation and chose the “Carnival Row” section to go into.
In the installation, fans are asked if they want to be a human or a creature. According to Bloom, the mayor chose creature, and was then given an “identity card.” Since all creatures are immigrants in Carnival Row, his card explained that he was “a mythological scrappy immigrant trying to make it in an oppressive new land.”
