Retired English actor Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the greatest actors in cinema’s history. Although picky, the actor won numerous accolades throughout his career. Most of his performances, if not all, have been critically acclaimed. The proof of this fact is that he has three Academy Awards, making him the actor with the most Academy Awards for Best Actor.
Back to the part about him being picky, Day-Lewis has rejected roles in some great movies. For instance, he rejected the lead role in 1993’s Philadelphia and the role of the vampire Lestat in 1994’s Interview with the Vampire.
Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot
Another such role that Day-Lewis reportedly rejected was Batman. Zack Snyder once approached the actor for a role in Man of Steel, and it was not until much later that he revealed which role it was.

There is much to recommend in Air, director Ben Affleck’s new movie about Nike going out on a limb to sign Michael Jordan to a sneaker contract. The acting is, across the board, top-notch. Viola Davis, the finest working actor in America, turns in another heater as Jordan’s shrewd, iron-fisted mother, Deloris. Affleck himself, having finally aged into his calling as an on-screen architect of ridiculous, faintly sleazy men, is in fine form as Nike founder and CEO Phil Knight. The direction does a good job capturing the...

Paul McCartney disagrees with fans who think a London Town track sounds “Lennon-esque.” The singer-songwriter wasn’t consciously trying to sound like his former bandmate and fellow Beatle, John Lennon.
Paul McCartney | Colin McConnell/Getty Images Paul McCartney said a ‘London Town’ track can have a couple of different meanings
In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul spoke about Wings’ London Town track, “I’m Carrying.” He explained that “carrying” could be taken in many different ways. For instance, he said he still carries some hefty psychological baggage from being in The Beatles.
Paul wrote, “People say, ‘What does this song mean?’ and I say, ‘Well, it’s up to you.’ It can mean a million things. What am I carrying here? I kind of make it clear that it’s packages. So I’m like Dapper Dan, with my carnation hidden by the packages. I’m bringing presents for you,...

Shares of iHeartMedia closed down 23 percent Wednesday, at $5.56, its lowest closing price since March 2020, after the company forecast continuing pressure in the advertising market.
Analysts from J.P. Morgan, led by Sebastiano Petti, downgraded the stock to underweight from neutral Wednesday and cut their price target to $5 from $10 a day after the company reported fourth-quarter earnings, which included its highest-ever quarterly revenue and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, but cut its first-quarter revenue and adjusted Ebitda guidance. The lowered guidance shows a continuance of “the uncertain macro environment, difficult comps, and softer brand and national advertising,” Petti wrote.
The J.P. Morgan analysts expect these headwinds to persist throughout 2023, with the lower revenues weighing on the company’s margins due to iHeartMedia’s high operating leverage, with $5.4 billion of debt, as well a shift towards lower margin podcast and digital advertising rather than high-margin broadcast radio revenue.

The honor marks the first time the award has been given to a Black designer, as well as a designer without a formal runway show (though Dan would likely disagree that he’s never had a runway show). From the very first episode of HBO Max’s The Hype, streetwear design competitors Justin, Kai and Paije emerged as judge (or “cosigner”) favorites.
Stylist and costume designer Marni Senofonte appreciated the messaging on Justin’s clothes; rap star Offset appreciated the edginess of Kai’s logos and leather; and buyer and costume designer Bephie Birkett appreciated Paije’s authenticity. It only makes sense, then, that the trio would make it to Thursday’s Season 1 finale.

“It begins with the script, and then the research, and then delving into the reality of the characters,” says “Snowfall” costume designer Mynka Draper about her work on the FX drama, which chronicles the crack epidemic in Los Angeles during the 1980s. The series required her to familiarize herself with the different intersecting groups involved in that story, from the Black and Hispanic communities to the CIA. “And I lived in LA in the ’80s, frankly. So I kind of lived through some of it, which I think is helpful.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Draper above.

When costume designer Shiona L. Turini saw Daniel Kaluuya’s classic Reebok with the rubber sole, she knew she had found her sneakers for “Queen & Slim.”
The beautifully crafted road movie follows a young black couple who go on the run through the South after a police officer is killed in self-defense. When we first meet Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Slim (Kaluuya), the two are on a first date in a diner.
“When it came to the design, it was so important to screenwriter Lena [Waithe]. We put a lot of care and attention into the waitress’ costumes that you see in the opening,” Turini said. “I wanted it to be that perfect shade where it’s not too pink and too red.”
For Turini, earrings were the standout costume piece.

Earlier this year, Ruth E. Carter won the costume design Oscar for her superheroic efforts in creating outfits for “Black Panther,” but 2020’s contenders are more likely to reflect the real world. And many of those assist the film’s story by undertaking their own journeys.

Exclusive: Michael B. Jordan is heading to HBO Max…with some style. The Black Panther actor and Alana Mayo are developing the comedy Fashionably Black (wt) under their Outlier Society production banner alongside HBO Max, which is set to launch their streaming service in 2020. The feature film will be penned by Christa Gatewood and Robin Thede (A Black Lady Sketch Show), who will also serve as executive producer. Set in the world of haute couture, the comedy explores what happens when you actually put a black woman at the top spot in fashion. The film will follow viral sensation Zoe Bankole who, after becoming the industry’s first and only black woman creative director for a French haute couture house, must contend with short deadlines, petty rivals and attempts at whitewashing her style in order to create the collection of her dreams.

The “Project Runway” designers came in out of the cold in episode five, “High Fashion to High Street.” After last week’s unconventional materials challenge in the woods the dozen remaining contestants stepped up … to the streets. So who finished the challenge on easy street, and who was told to hit the bricks? Find out below in our live blog for all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
“High Street” introduced the designers to Dapper Dan, a Harlem fashion icon who brought together the worlds of sophisticated design and casual streetwear. And that was the challenge: to create their own interpretations of luxury streetwear. But that wasn’t the most difficult part. The designers also had an even bigger time crunch than usual: they only had until midnight that night to finish their looks.

Sometimes no news is good news. After four weeks of competition “Project Runway” designers Bishme Cromartie and Jamall Osterholm are the only two remaining who haven’t gotten a single critique from the judges yet. That’s good news in the sense that neither designer has gotten a low score thus far, but it also means that neither of them has stood out enough to get a high score. Are they due for recognition — or a tongue-lashing — in week five?
Flying under the radar in the middle of the pack is better than only being singled out for your mistakes. That has been the case for Garo Sparo and Sonia Kasparian, whose only critiques thus far have been negative. And poor Kovid Kapoor has been on an emotional roller coaster, landing in the bottom two, then the top three, then back to the bottom two over the last three weeks.

“Project Runway” fans have been in limbo since season 16 aired in the fall of 2017. The series was produced by the Weinstein Company and thus became a casualty of the sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein. After years on Lifetime (which is currently airing its final season of “Project Runway All Stars“), the show was picked back up by its original network Bravo, but without its hosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. They’re making it work, however: season 17 of the long-running fashion competition premieres Thursday, March 14, at 8:00pm.
Stepping in for Klum as host is Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss. And taking over Gunn’s mentoring duties is a man who understands full well how it feels to be a contestant on the series: season four “Runway” champ Christian Siriano. But they’ve got big shoes to fill. Klum and Gunn were perennial nominees at the Emmys for their hosting duties,...

The upcoming season of “Project Runway” is set to feature the show’s first transgender model as the fashion design competition show moves toward inclusivity in its return to Bravo.
“We have full-figured models, we have African-American models, we have our first transgender model in ‘Project Runway’ this season,” judge Nina Garcia told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday.
In its 16 seasons, the show has yet to showcase a trans model on the runway, though it has featured at least one out transgender designer, three-time competitor Ari South, who transitioned between her first and second stints on the show.

The hoodie has as much to say about it’s wearer as, say, the white t-shirt does. By which I mean that, depending on context, it can say anything. The white t-shirt can imply clean, erotic, the worker – or a combination of all three. In the eyes of contemporary media, the hoodie largely suggests youth. Shady youth, someone not keen to reveal their identity because they are planning on robbing you or worse. Put the hoodie on a black man and it is pretty much akin to walking down the street in a striped jumper with a sack marked ‘swag’. Luke Cage is not set to change that perception, but it does make us reevaluate the role of the hoodie on screen. For the first time in a long time, perhaps ever, a black man in a hoodie in Harlem is not a suspect. In fact he’s a goddamn hero.
