It goes without saying that Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) are the heart of "Supernatural." Throughout its 15-season run, the monster-slaying brothers were the face of the CW series: its story begins and ends with them, saving people, hunting things and living up to their family legacy. But its also true that they couldn't have saved the world from multiple apocalypses without a little help from their friends.
As the seasons progressed, what began as a story about two brothers searching for their father became a beautiful example of the power of found family. It's hard to remember a time before Castiel (Misha Collins) was a core part of their team and, while he's only introduced in the last couple of seasons, Jack Kline (Alexander Calvert) later becomes a crucial addition to their family.

Supernatural ran for 15 years and is the longest continuously running American science fiction and fantasy show in history (pipped only by Doctor Who 1966-1989 in the UK). It has a devoted fanbase and has produced novels, graphic novels, a short web-series, and a Japanese anime adaptation. Surely, then, the show is a perfect jumping-off point for a spin-off series? That’s a no-brainer, right?
Except that there have been two previous attempts at a Supernatural spin-off, both getting a pilot episode aired during the show itself, neither of which were picked up by the network. Now, Dean Winchester himself, Jensen Ackles, is producing another attempt, with the first season of The Winchesters due to air on the CW this autumn. So, what does this one need to do to succeed where the two earlier attempts have failed?

Supernatural Season 15, Episode 18
Only two episodes left. The clock marking time until the end ticks louder each week. Now, there’s a bit of an echo to the sound.
Last week’s episode saw the Winchesters struggling against each other as it became clear that Billie’s plan to defeat Chuck was merely a power grab on her part. But naturally, things are never straightforward on Supernatural. Allies are not always allies, villains are not necessarily always villains. Billie’s attempt at grabbing Chuck’s position succeeded only in turning Dean’s sights on her instead of Chuck. Dean needs that outlet, he needs a bad guy he can punish. It’s the hunter’s way, and as we’ve seen in the past, the hunter is not always right.
This close to the series finale, the writing team, especially Bob Berens who penned this episode,...

Supernatural Season 15 Episode 12
Chuck opens this episode of Supernatural by monologuing, and frankly complaining, to Radio Shed guy in an alternate universe where we have President Hillary Clinton. This little mention is a quick way for the viewer to get on board with the alternate universe situation while showing a believable world like ours — not some spooky hellscape, but a world we could conceivably care about. Chuck’s exposition details his frustration with trying to get our Sam and Dean to follow with his Cain and Abel storyline. He talks about how in other universes, he got them to play along, but it’s these two, the ones who are resisting the most, who are the really important ones to him.
This intro scene, though it may at first seem unconnected to the story where Sam and Dean need to rescue Sheriff Jody, is setting...

Today, the CW gave a thumbs up for Supernatural‘s 15th season, and as the series closes in on its 300th episode on February 7, it may just be the longest-running hourlong series on an outlier network.
Said the CW president Mark Pedowitz at TCA about the network’s continued commitment to the series: “As long as the ratings hold up and the guys (stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) want to do it, it’s really that simple. They have created something about these two brothers that actually transcends.”
Created by Eric Kripke, Supernatural centers on two brothers who follow their father’s footsteps as “hunters,” fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds including monsters, demons and gods that roam the Earth.
A key reason why Supernatural has remained on the air is that it’s a great launchpad for frosh CW shows.

As wildly popular and successful as Supernatural has proven to be, the seemingly immortal horror series has yet to produce a spinoff that’s made it beyond the backdoor pilot stage. So far, both “Bloodlines” and “Wayward Sisters” failed to gain enough traction with the fanbase as to allow for an offshoot, even if I assumed the latter was pretty much a lock.

Before Wayward Sisters‘ Claire Novak escaped death, she once feared a grim ending to her story, as seen in this exclusive deleted scene from Supernatural Season 13.
As viewers will recall, Sheriff Jody Mills (played by Kim Rhodes) warned her surrogate daughter Claire (Kathryn Newton) about Patience’s (Clark Backo) deadly vision in the potential spinoff’s backdoor pilot. The psychic teen then filled in the details. But in the above video, Claire learns her fate during a different exchange.
“What exactly did you see?” Claire asks as she, Patience and dreamwalker Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip) drive during a rainy, ominous night.

Supernatural is one of The CW's most popular series.
It is entering its fourteenth season later this year, and not very many shows reach that milestone in today's climate.

Supernatural, the longest-running sci-fi series on primetime TV, took its traditional Sunday spot in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con.
Moderated by Richard Speight Jr. and Rob Benedict (both appear on the show), the panel included the Winchesters Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as well as Misha Collins and Comic-Con first-timer Alexander Calvert. Executive producers and co-showrunners Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb also took the dais alongside executive producing/writing team Eugenie Ross-Leming and Brad Buckner to talk about the upcoming 14th season without revealing any spoilers.

Wayward Sisters is the second Supernatural spin-off to fail to secure a series order. For those who are curious, the spin-off would have been centered on Sheriff Jody Mills as well as her surrogate daughters fighting a wide range of monsters in Sioux Falls in the state of South Dakota, meaning that it would have been an interesting contrast in that it would have been centered in a single place instead of location-hopping on a constant basis. Ever since the midseason finale of Supernatural concluded, we the fans have been kind of left in the dark as to where the series would go next. Sure, we knew that a backdoor pilot for the Wayward Sisters spinoff was next on the agenda, but all promo videos being circulated were very, very vague to say the least.
As it so happens, this decidedly meaty trailer for the midseason premiere is enough to tide us over for the next week, but does focus more on the hopeful spinoff than addressing what’s next for Sam and Dean Winchester themselves. When we really think about it, though, it makes sense that the producers not show all their cards at this moment, likely wishing to preserve the mystique of the horrific alternate universe known only to us as “the Bad Place” until it’s showtime.

Normally at this time of year, we’re gearing up to see exactly how Sam and Dean Winchester will get themselves out of whatever jam the midseason finale of Supernatural left them in. Actually, we’re in that situation yet again, but this time around, they’re going to need some major help from outside parties.
Incidentally enough, said help will come in the form of Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes), Claire Novak (Kathryn Love Newton), Donna Hanscum (Brianna Buckmaster), Alex (Katherine Ramdeen) and the recently introduced Patience (Clark Backo) – as well as newcomer Kaia (Yadira Guevara-Prip), thus setting up the hopeful Wayward Sisters spinoff.
And unlike the Bloodlines fiasco from a few years back, this backdoor pilot looks to feel much more organic, even beginning with Jody telling Claire that “The boys have been on a hunting trip and haven’t been home in a few days,” which echoes what...
