The upcoming Apple TV+ series “Government Cheese” has filled out its main cast with four new additions, Variety has learned exclusively.
Jahi Winston, Evan Alexander Ellison, Jeremy Bobb, and Louis Cancelmi have all joined the show. They will appear alongside previously announced series lead David Oyelowo as well as cast members Simone Missick, Bokeem Woodbine, Sunita Mani, and Adam Beach.
Based on the short film of the same name by Paul Hunter, “Government Cheese” follows Hampton Chambers (Oyelowo), described as “a man recently released from prison who struggles to keep his criminal past at bay and win back his family, all while processing moments of divine intervention that seem to happen with increasing frequency.”
Winston is repped by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Ellison is repped by Amplified for management and talent agency Pacific Artists Management. Bobb is repped by Gersh, and Suskin/Karshan Management. Cancelmi is repped by Gersh and Red Letter Entertainment.

In every generation, there is a scream queen–an actress known for starring in horror films who comes to embody the genre landscape of her time. From Janet Leigh and her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis, Sarah Michelle Gellar to Maika Monroe, these women often originate a beloved character or star in a variety of cutting edge films, pushing the boundaries as cinema evolves.
The jury’s still out on which Gen Z actress will ascend to the scream queen throne, but Sydney Sweeney is making a strong case for her legacy. Though not exclusively known for horror, this versatile actress specializes in creating fearsome characters that break the mold set by her predecessors. With her wide eyes and angelic smile, Sweeney has a knack for luring us in with the perception of innocence only to shock us with a cutting remark or withering glare.

"Euphoria" and "The White Lotus" star Sydney Sweeney has been having a pretty stellar moment. While the actor has been performing since childhood, her star has been shooting across the sky in the last few years. Just last year, she starred in the thrilling drama "Reality" for HBO and the box office smash hit "Anyone But You," and is kicking off her 2024 by entering Sony's Spider-Man Universe with "Madame Web." But becoming Spider-Woman isn't the only exciting venture on Sweeney's horizon. She's also reteaming with director Michael Mohan once again, this time for the horror film "Immaculate."
With a script by Andrew Lobel, "Immaculate" is a psychological horror film wherein Sweeney plays Cecilia, a nun who is given the opportunity to join an illustrious convent in Italy. Her new home seems absolutely perfect until strange things begin happening around the convent, including what appears to be an immaculate conception.

Spyglass is answering the call once more, throwing a new Scream movie into development.
The company has tapped Christopher Landon — a scary movie stalwart whose credits include the Happy Death Day series as well as body-switching horror-comedy Freaky — to direct the seventh installment of the long-running franchise, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
Landon takes over from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking team known as Radio Silence, who helmed the 2022 installment that rebooted and refurbished the movie series. The duo followed that movie, simply titled Scream, with Scream VI, which was released in March.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett stepped back, in part, to focus on an original horror movie for Universal, which currently remains impacted by the actors strike. The duo, as well as third group member Chad Villella, will now act as executive producers.

Thanks to the release of its third season, “Outer Banks” made an impressive showing on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, becoming the most viewed title of the week. The teen drama was watched for 3.2 billion minutes during the Feb. 20-26 viewing window, during which Season 3 was available for four days.
According to Nielsen, Seasons 1 and 2 of “Outer Banks” were cumulatively viewed for about one billion minutes during this interval, meaning that one-third of the viewership came from fans who rewatched or newly discovered the series ahead of Season 3’s launch.
In the No. 2 position for this viewing window was another Netflix title: “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scancal.” The true crime docuseries was released on Feb. 22 watched for 1.4 billion minutes in its first five days of availability.
“The Last of Us” had its best showing yet with 1.2 billion minutes watched. The HBO series’ sixth episode debuted just hours before the beginning of the Feb.

The Season 3 premiere of Disney+’s “The Mandalorian,” the live-action “Star Wars” show that played a key role in the service’s 2019 launch, jumped through hyperspace to the top of the charts in the latest Wrap Report, which highlights viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs. Though it defeated a large streaming empire in the process, the victory was weaker than one might have hoped.
The long-awaited new season’s first episode was less of a standout measured against other recent Disney+ releases. A gap of more than two years after the second season finale may have allowed some “Star Wars” fatigue to settle in. The episode outpaced the premieres of “Star Wars” spinoff “Andor” by nearly 50% in viewership, but still fell short of “Loki” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi’s” audience by double digits, trailing those launches by 35% and 28%, respectively.

The latest Netflix true-crime docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” has tapped into America’s obsession with the case of disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh. Its new three-part series climbed to the top of the streaming charts in the latest Wrap Report, which highlights television viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs.
Whether by sheer luck or incredible programming wiles, the docuseries was timed perfectly to the five-week trial of one of the most prominent families in the South that has dominated headlines and been a fixture on news networks for months. The Netflix series drove even more interest in the June 2021 killings of Murdaugh’s wife Maggie and son Paul as it dropped on Feb. 22, the beginning of the week-long period covered by this report.

The discovery that their house is haunted by a ghost named Ernest makes Kevin’s family a social media sensation. But when Kevin and Ernest get to the bottom of the mystery of Ernest’s past, they become targets of the CIA.
There was a certain sense of charm, wonder, and childlike optimism brimming all throughout Christopher Landon’s We Have a Ghost that I couldn’t get enough of. In many ways, this is a film that is heavily inspired by Steven Spielberg’s filmography, most notably E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. Heck, at times it might even borrow from that film too much, but I love that Landon was hugely inspired by so many great projects for this film.

As an accomplished character actor and leading man, David Harbour has just about done it all in his career. But his latest role as Ernest the Ghost in Netflix’s We Have a Ghost is unlike any character he—or almost any other modern actor—has ever attempted. The gimmick is this: Harbour has no lines. He doesn’t speak once in the entire movie.
Actors lend their voices to movies without showing their faces all the time, but rarely does it happen the other way around for a leading performance in the 21st century. The question is, why make a movie in which one of its most recognizable stars on Netflix doesn’t say a word?
The answer is the same for any question about good artistic choices: Because it makes the story better.
Speaking of the story, it revolves around the Presley family, who’s just moved into...

Christopher Landon has quietly established himself as one of the most original voices in the horror genre. Adopting a slightly campy, fun-loving approach, Landon wrote and directed a series of movies for Blumhouse that are beloved by fans: Happy Death Day and its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, and the underrated Freaky. Now, working with a much bigger budget, Landon’s been able to stretch out with his latest film for Netflix, We Have a Ghost, which stars David Harbour as a ghost haunting a house owned by Anthony Mackie and his family.
Unlike most other haunted house movies, Harbour’s silent ghost, Ernest, has a heart of gold and becomes BFFs with Jahi Winston’s Kevin, the family’s long-ignored son who comes into his own, protecting Ernest from his somewhat opportunistic father. Eventually, Kevin and Ernest try to unravel the amnesia-stricken ghost’s past in a family adventure...

Review: We Have A Ghost is the quintessential Neflix movie: a solid budget, recognizable actors in supporting roles, and some fresh-faced teen talent performing for a talented director. It also is overlong and does not seem to have any oversight on what should have been trimmed from its excessive running time. Writer/Director Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky) evokes the family-friendly Amblin movies of yesterday for his latest, Netflix’s We Have a Ghost. Wearing its formative gateway horror influences on its sleeves, We Have a Ghost blends nostalgic family adventure-induced charm with Landon’s distinct ability to render authentic characters to an affecting degree. While it threatens to overstay its welcome, the tender adventure delivers ghostly charm, poignant family bonds, and humor that’ll appeal to new generations of budding genre fans.

"Amblin-esque" is a term that gets thrown around a lot, and it mostly means "This movie/TV show features kids on bikes." But "We Have a Ghost," a sweet-natured family-friendly haunted house pic from "Freaky" director Christopher Landon, really has that Amblin vibe going for it. Were it not for some very modern social media-based jokes, it feels like "We Have a Ghost" could've easily fit into the late '80s and early '90s, when Steven Spielberg reigned supreme and everyone was trying to ape his style and, for lack of a better word, brand. Indeed, "We Have a Ghost" feels like the result of decades of Amblin-like pics and their various clones. It owes more than a few things to movies like "E.T.", "Poltergeist," "Beetlejuice," and even, believe it or not, the "Casper" movie from 1995.

The best horror movies succeed by tapping into our collective nightmares. They take the big ideas that haunt us at night — the things we’re all afraid to admit terrify us — and give us a thrilling catharsis by bringing them to life on screen. Great horror filmmakers understand that there’s already more than enough darkness in our hearts, and all they have to do is reflect it back at us. So it was only a matter of time before a brave director took on the one bogeyman whose portrayal has evaded even the most twisted auteurs: David Harbour in a bowling shirt with a bad combover.
While it’s hard to judge anyone for looking bad when they’re damned to spend eternity wearing whatever they happened to have on when they died, it’s worth noting that ghosts have a relatively simple dress code to follow. When it...

News of a fresh horror comedy from Christopher Landon, director of the joyously silly “Happy Death Day” and its sequel, should be greeted with cautious optimism at the very least. He’s been working in the space for some time now, having also co-written and directed “Freaky,” “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” and the more straightforward “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones,” and understands how to thread that particular needle better than most. His latest feels like both a natural next step and also something of a departure: a family-friendly haunted-house story releasing on Netflix. Unlike his previous efforts, however, “We Have a Ghost” fails to capture what makes this particular genre hybrid so much fun.

I've lost count of the number of movies in the past 10 or 15 years that have been promoted as homages to Amblin, Steven Spielberg's beloved production company that was responsible for an influential swath of family-friendly adventure films in the '80s and '90s. While many of those self-described homage projects managed to mimic the sheen and aesthetic of an Amblin production, few have been able to recapture the heart at the center of many of those stories. In my estimation, "We Have a Ghost," the new Netflix movie from writer/director Christopher Landon, actually pulls it off.
The film follows a family (led by Anthony Mackie) who moves into a house that's haunted by a sad ghost named Ernest, played by a silent David Harbour, whose hangdog expression is put to great use here. The family's youngest son, Kevin (Jahi Winston), befriends the ghost and tries to help...

Happy Death Day and Freaky director Christopher Landon’s Amblin-style family adventure We Have a Ghost offers paranormal thrills to balance the heart.

Happy Death Day and Freaky director Christopher Landon’s Amblin-style family adventure We Have a Ghost premieres on Netflix on February 24.
Written and directed by Landon, We Have a Ghost is an adaptation of a story written by Geoff Manaugh, published on Vice in October of that year.
In the film, “Finding a ghost named Ernest haunting their new home turns Kevin’s family into overnight social media sensations. But when Kevin and Ernest go rogue to investigate the mystery of Ernest’s past, they become a target of the CIA.”
We Have a Ghost stars Jahi Di’Allo Winston (Charm City Kings) as Kevin and David Harbour (Violent Night, “Stranger Things”) as the ghostly Ernest. Filmmaker Christopher Landon loves a good scare. But while the man behind such contemporary horror hits as five (!!) of the “Paranormal Activity” films, “Happy Death Day,” “Freaky,” and “Viral” is best associated with his terrifying stuff, he’s got other tricks and treats on his mind.
Landon’s latest film, the Netflix outing “We Have a Ghost,” which he wrote and directed, smacks of horror — it follows a family, including Anthony Mackie, Erica Ash, Jahi Di’Allo Winston, and Niles Fitch, who move into a new house and discover it comes complete with a ghost, played by David Harbour — it’s also a bit more family-friendly, certainly funny, and driven by ideas about what happens when something gets big on the internet. It’s another evolution for Landon, who seems more than ready to subvert expectations when it comes to what he’s interested in making.

In case you’re wondering what it’s like to work with Jennifer Coolidge, David Harbour’s here to confirm that she’s “as amazing as you think she is, both off camera and on.”
Although the “Stranger Things” star “really only [had] one day with her” on set while filming their upcoming movie “We Have A Ghost”, Harbour, who plays a ghost named Ernest, had a pleasant experience working alongside Coolidge, who portrays a TV medium.

David Harbour is a relative newcomer to the MCU — he debuted his role as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in 2021’s Black Widow and is set to reprise the character in the upcoming Thunderbolts team-up.
So when it came time to learn everything he could about his future castmates, he turned to We Have a Ghost co-star Anthony Mackie, who had some particular advice about his franchise frenemy, Sebastian Stan, who will also be appearing in Thunderbolts as Bucky Barnes, aka The Winter Soldier.
“Sebastian is a very nice person,” Mackie said with a grin as he and co-star Jahi Di’Allo Winston spoke with Et’s Ash Crossan this week.
“Don’t take his quietness and standoffishness as him being mean or rude. You just have to warm him up a little bit,” he teased. “You know, give him some almond butter, talk to him a little bit. He’ll be fine.

David Harbour says Jennifer Coolidge chastised him for not strangling her hard enough in their forthcoming Netflix comedy, We Have a Ghost.
Harbour stars as the titular ghost in the movie, who is not able to speak, while Coolidge plays a TV medium tasked with communicating with him.
Harbour appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday (14 February) where he detailed the scene in which “a CGI thing shoots out of my face, and it's a hand, and it strangles [Coolidge's character]”.
“She was like, really pissed,” Harbour said, explaining that his hand was used for the strangling.
“We stopped the take, and she was like, ‘David, you gotta really strangle me. You gotta strangle me!’”
However, Harbour explained he was reluctant to play any harder with the beloved White Lotus star: “I’m not gonna strangle America’s Sweetheart.”
Anthony Mackie and Jahi Di’Allo Winston also star in We Have a Ghost.

Jennifer Coolidge has lived many lives on screen, one of her latest being in Netflix’s upcoming film We Have a Ghost. Judging by her fear-stricken reaction to seeing an actual ghost, the psychic medium she plays, Judy Romano, is the kind of supernatural communicator who hopes they never actually have to come in contact with the supernatural.
It doesn’t help that the ghost at hand, a wronged family man named Ernest (David Harbour), is in cahoots with a teenager named Kevin (Jahi Di’Allo Winston), whose family moved into a haunted house.

What happens when you take a modern-day dysfunctional family and move them into a haunted house? According to movies of the past, they get the bejesus scared out of them on a daily basis, until they finally decide to get the hell out of dodge and leave the specter-filled home behind. But I think Netflix's upcoming comedy "We Have A Ghost" paints a much more realistic image of how it would go down: Sure, the family is initially scared, but then they break out the cameras, make a YouTube account, and turn their haunting into a lucrative phenomenon known as internet fame.
