(Welcome to TV, Interrupted, a series where the /Film team remembers, eulogizes, and makes a case for the revival of TV shows we loved that were canceled far too soon.)
Often, the shows we cover here at TV, Interrupted have been off the air for quite a while. We're here for the Hannibals, the Wonderfalls, and even the Carnivàles. But every now and again, a fresh cancellation feels too acutely unfair to ignore, and some shows are worth celebrating -- and pitching to new networks -- before the dust has even settled. "Rutherford Falls" is one of these rare cases. News of the Peacock series' premature demise just broke on Friday, and while its cast and crew are still sharing their own statements about its ending, I'm already falling back into a rewatch of one of the most underrated comfort watches of the past few years.

"Rutherford Falls" has been cancelled. The Native American-led sitcom set in a fictional small town has aired two seasons at Peacock, but today TVLine reports it won't get a third. This is frankly heartbreaking news for anyone who was following the sweet, clever comedy, which is one of only a small handful of American TV shows ever made by and about Native American people. But all hope isn't lost, as series co-creator Sierra Teller Ornelas has shared her intention to find a new home for the series if possible.
The series was made by Ornelas, a Navajo writer and filmmaker, along with star Ed Helms and "Parks and Recreation" and "The Good Place" creator Michael Schur. Unfortunately, though, "Rutherford Falls" never seemed to have the visibility of Schur's other shows, and remained a hidden gem for its two-year run.

Rutherford Falls was critically acclaimed and hailed for its Indigenous representation both on camera on behind-the-scenes. Following Peacock’s decision to cancel Rutherford Falls, co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Sierra Teller Ornelas reflected on the show’s two-season run on the NBCU streamer, its legacy and potential future.
Ornelas served as showrunner on Rutherford Falls, which she co-created/executive produces with Ed Helms and Mike Schur. The critically acclaimed series, starring Helms and Jana Schmieding as lifelong best friends Nathan Rutherford and Reagan Wells, respectively, set a benchmark for Native representation on-screen and behind the camera. “it’s been an honor to introduce the best of Indian Country to the masses,” Ornelas’ said, adding that she and the other producers “will be exploring other platforms” for Rutherford Falls to continue. Peacock will not return to Rutherford Falls.
The NBCUniversal-backed streaming service has canceled the comedy series from showrunner Sierra Teller Ornelas and starring Ed Helms after a two-season run.
Created by Ornelas, Helms and Mike Schur (The Good Place), Rutherford Falls marked a breakthrough series for Native representation onscreen and in the writers’ room.
The cancellation arrives nearly three months after Peacock dropped all eight episodes of the show’s sophomore season. While Peacock does not release traditional viewership data, season two of the comedy starring Helms, Jana Schmieding and Michael Greyeyes has a rare 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. (Season one is also certified fresh with a 92 percent rating.)
Despite its status as a critical breakout and breakthrough for representation, sources say Peacock wasn’t keen on renewing the show after its freshman season because of a lack of viewership. Those...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Season 2 of Rutherford Falls.] Rutherford Falls is back and electing a new mayor, but not without a few laughs along the way. On the ballot is Jesse Leigh‘s Bobbie Yang. As the assistant to Nathan Rutherford (Ed Helms), Bobbie’s loyalties were proven in Season 1, but in Season 2, they’re taking charge of their own future by running for office which has been left vacant by Deidre (Dana L. Wilson). With the support of Nathan and Terry Thomas (Michael Greyes), Bobbie works on connecting with the community around them in unique ways, like through creative makeup tutorials. The effort pays off by the time Season 2 comes to its conclusion and we’re catching up with Leigh who is opening up about non-binary and LGBTQ+ representation through Bobbie’s story, the creative collaboration with creators Sierra Teller Ornelas, Helms, and Mike Schur, along with much more. With the debut of “Rutherford Falls” on Peacock in 2021, Sierra Teller Ornelas became the first-ever Native American to serve as a comedy showrunner. It’s a title she doesn’t take lightly — though it did create a certain degree of pressure for the show to succeed. With Season 2, however, Ornelas was able to have a bit more fun.
“In Season 1, we felt this real responsibility to make something that was the first of its kind. But with such love that we got from viewers, [by Season 2] we felt the confidence to tell stories we really want to tell,” Ornelas tells Variety. “Like, how do Native people do Halloween?”
It’s a serious question. Because of the offensive, oft-sexualized costumes of Native historical figures like Pocahontas that pop up every year, Reagan (Jana Schmieding) calls Halloween “the Super Bowl of cultural appropriation” in Episode 7. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t also...

After a first season spent reckoning with the past, with an inconveniently located statue of a dead white colonialist as the jumping-off point, Peacock’s Rutherford Falls is ready to look forward.
As characters like Reagan (Jana Schmieding) and Terry (Michael Greyeyes) start dreaming big for the town in general and for its Minishonka community more specifically, the storylines become defined less by conflict than cooperation, yielding a series that feels sweeter, more relaxed, less bogged down by the gravity of the past — but also one that seems to render its own white-guy co-lead less necessary than ever.
Initially, though, it looks like business as usual. Basically as soon as Nathan Rutherford (Ed Helms) returns to town in the second season premiere, he seems to fall back into his old habit of making everything about him. “I am a Nathan that knows I...

The most memorable moment of “Rutherford Falls” — featuring two characters sitting opposite each other and just talking with startling honesty — deviates sharply from the show’s established norm. Otherwise, the new comedy from Ed Helms, Sierra Teller Ornelas and uber-producer Michael Schur focuses on hapless heir Nathan Rutherford (Helms) trying to preserve his family legacy while his childhood best friend Reagan works to do the same for her tribe — which, to say the least, has a complicated relationship to the Rutherfords who first “settled” the town years ago. In the first four episodes screened for critics, as the increasingly complicated plot takes over.
In the fourth episode, when “Rutherford Falls” gets laser-focused on making a specific point, and even deadly serious about it, it makes for a genuinely jarring scene — but also, in the absence of another distinct center, a welcome one.
Terry (Michael Greyeyes), a wealthy Native American casino owner,...

Change is coming to “Rutherford Falls,” and Ed Helms is Not happy about that.
In the new Peacock comedy from Helms, Mike Schur and Sierra Teller Ornelas, Nathan Rutherford (Helms) is the proud descendant of his small town’s founder. But the centrally located — and we do mean centrally — statue of “Big Larry” Rutherford has become problematic.
Not for the reasons we’re used to hearing about in the real world these days — or at least, not initially — but in a much more practical way.
You see, the statue of Lawrence Rutherford was placed in the middle of the road (or more likely the road was built around Big Larry) downtown, and cars seem to be very attracted to it lately. We can’t have that.
As the logline goes: “Rutherford Falls” follows two lifelong best friends, Nathan Rutherford (Helms) and Reagan Wells (Jana Schmieding), who find themselves at a...

One of the central themes of Peacock’s upcoming Michael Schur-Ed Helms comedy “Rutherford Falls” is an examination of the role that historical statues play in our understanding of history, a particularly timely storyline given the renewed debates surrounding Confederate monuments.
“I would say the existence of Confederate and historical statues and their controversies going way back fed into these ideas that we were bouncing around,” Helms said during a Television Critics Association press tour on Monday. “But there wasn’t a specific series of events in recent history that triggered it.”
“Rutherford Falls,” co-created by Helms, Schur and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” alum Sierra Teller Ornelas, centers on a fictional small town in upstate New York and the Native American reservation it borders. The series begins when the town is turned upside down when local legend and town namesake, Nathan Rutherford (Helms) fights the moving of a historical statue.

“You never see Indians on TV,” said Rutherford Falls co-creator and showrunner Sierra Teller Ornelas. “When you do it’s one guy and he has to transform into a wolf.”
The Peacock comedy, which also comes from Ed Helms and Mike Schur is set in a small town in upstate New York and the Native American reservation it borders. Helms plays Nathan Rutherford, a local legend and town namesake, who fights the moving of a historical statue.
Schur, who is coming off NBC’s The Good Place, said on a panel as part of the Ctam press tour that the show is scheduled to shoot in the next three to four weeks.
Teller Ornelas, who’d previously worked with Schur on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, said that the show, which this morning announced the casting of Jana Schmieding, Michael Greyeyes, Jesse Leigh and Dustin Milligan, was able to showcase the gallows’ humor of Native Americans.

As production starts to ramp up after months of stagnation due to the global pandemic, we’re finally getting a glimpse at what’s heading to screens; one show inching closer to fruition is the new Peacock series “Rutherford Falls.” Starring Ed Helms, “Rutherford Falls” tells the story of small-town guy Nathan Rutherford (Helms) and what happens when a statue of his namesake ancestor is slated to be moved.
The series reteams Helms with “The Office” scribe Mike Schur, with the two acting as co-creators and executive producers. “I always felt like Mike got me in a way that very few writers do,” Helms said during the series’ Ctam Press Tour virtual panel on Monday.

Parent-company Viacom rebranded Spike TV, earlier this year. The newly minted Paramount Network didn't get off to the best start though, and emblematic of its rough beginning is the rocky road its new Heathers TV show took to the air. First it was postponed, then rescheduled, and then cancelled, because of all the recent school violence. When Paramount couldn't find any takers, they decided to air nine of the 10-episode first season after all, with some content edited out. Are they just making back what money they can, or does this series stand a chance? Will Heathers be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.
