Ian Hamilton(1853-1947)
General Sir Ian Standish Monteith Hamilton GCB, GCMG, DSO, TD, served in the British Army from 1873 to 1916. He first saw action in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, and also served with distinction in the South African War. During the First World War, Hamilton was responsible for the land campaign at Gallipoli, and when that failed was recalled to the UK. He faced considerable criticism for this failure and went into retirement, though he kept an active role in the British Legion and other welfare organisations for ex-servicemen.
