The NBC News career of Ronna McDaniel, the former head of the Republican National Committee, has been ended before it had ever truly begun.
NBC News said Tuesday that it would cut ties with McDaniel after a phalanx of popular anchors rebelled against a decision to make her a political contributor who would offer commentary through the 2024 presidential election. NBC News executives had hoped to gain new insight to the thinking of the modern Republican party, but NBC News journalists could not stomach the prospect of putting McDaniel on air after she had helped former President Donald Trump in his efforts to undermine the integrity of the 2020 election, which was won by current officeholder Joe Biden.
“There is no doubt that the last several days have been difficult for the News Group. After listening to the legitimate concerns of many of you, I have decided that Ronna McDaniel will not be an NBC News contributor,...

A long line of MSNBC’s most popular anchors spent Monday calling out the network’s corporate sibling, NBC News, for its hire of former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel in a stunning display of internal rifts laid bare on the TV screen.
The hire of McDaniel as a contributor is “inexplicable,” Rachel Maddow said on MSNBC Monday night as part of a half-hour commercial-free monologue that painted the former politico as one in a line of fascists and would-be usurpers who have tried to take over America’s political process. McDaniel, who during her time as RNC head helped former President Donald Trump in his efforts to nullify the 2020 presidential election, said Maddow, “is part of an ongoing project to get rid of our system of government.”

There exist three Oscar categories where it’s possible to watch all nominated films in one shot – that’s shorts, Animated, Live Action and Documentary. Packaged into three feature length films presented by ShortsTV, the Oscar Nominated Short Films open in theaters today for a four-week run on about 650 screens in the U.S. and Canada.
It’s 19-year tradition popular with audiences and theaters. Each film is also “an event. Then you can go argue about who you think should win,” says ShortsTV founder and CEO Carter Pilcher.
Theater owners can screen any or all of the three compilations however and whenever they want from a traditional run to a one-week marathon before the Academy Awards on March 10.
Pilcher says the animated bundle tends to do the best historically, although the 2023 short called My Year Of Dicks nudged out some of the family audiences that love animation, giving Live Action the win.

Producer Rob Reiner and director Dan Partland screened God & Country, a new documentary chronicling the rise of Christian nationalism, on Capitol Hill on Thursday evening.
The Oscilloscope Laboratories release, opening in theaters on Feb. 16, features a number of Christian thought leaders, including Russell Moore, editor in chief of Christianity Today and director of the Public Theology Project; social activist Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II; political commentator and author Charlie Sykes; political commentator and author David French; evangelical clergyman Rob Schenck; and VeggieTales co-creator and Holy Post podcast host Phil Vischer.
Reiner said in a video message that the project was “about a movement that’s on the rise in America called Christian nationalism. Now, I know what you are thinking, why is Rob Reiner, a Jew, producing a film about this subject? Well, it’s because I worry that this movement, in a quest for political power, is...

Age continues to be an issue for the Biden administration, as voters worry President Joe Biden is too old to serve out a second term, should he win re-election. But MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” crew had some advice for Biden: simply embrace it.
On Monday morning’s episode of the show, host Joe Scarborough was once again frustrated by new polling putting Biden at low odds against Trump, but noted that the Republican party is clearly “divided” right now. Scarborough posed the question of whether a “viable, strong message” from Democrats could give them the edge over the next year, and panelist Charlie Sykes argued yes.
He even had that message ready to go.
“It’s not really that complicated. Joe Biden can say, ‘Yes, I’m old, but he is crazy. They are crazy, and they are dangerous, and they are burning it down,'” he said, earning a laugh from host Mika Brzezinski.

Oscilloscope Laboratories has snapped up U.S. rights to God & Country: The Rise of Christian Nationalism, a new documentary produced by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rob Reiner (A Few Good Men). Featuring prominent faith leaders who shine a light on the dangerous implications of this growing movement, it’s slated for release in early 2024.
The film directed by five-time Emmy nominee Dan Partland (Intervention) looks at the implications of Christian Nationalism and how it distorts not only our constitutional republic, but Christianity itself. Featuring numerous prominent Christian thought leaders, the question it asks is, what happens when a faith built on love, sacrifice, and forgiveness grows political tentacles, conflating power, money, and belief into hyper-nationalism?
In addition to the always politically active and socially conscious Rob Reiner, producers included Michele Reiner, Steve Okin, and Jeff Okin. Among those offering expert commentary in the doc are political commentator and author David French; VeggieTales...

A 2003 MSNBC video has resurfaced of a young Vivek Ramaswamy asking Rev. Al Sharpton about his lack of political experience during Sharpton’s run for the 2004 Democratic nomination. The footage has spread on social media as people, including Ramaswamy’s Republican primary opponents, question the candidate’s own lack of experience in professional politics. Ramaswamy’s background is in business.
Ramaswamy, then an 18-year-old Harvard student, was questioning Sharpton at an October 2003 event hosted by former MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews. Ramaswamy began, “Hello, I’m Vivek, and I want to ask you: last week on the show we had Sen. Kerry, and the week before, we had Sen. Edwards. And my question for you is, of all the Democratic candidates out there, why should I vote for the one with the least political experience?”
Sharpton fired back, “Well, you shouldn’t, because I have the most political experience,” to approving laughter from the crowd.

Should Ron DeSantis be elected president, he has promised to start “slitting throats” on the first day of his term. And “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough was outright floored at that language on Friday morning, calling it part of a “calculated campaign” to foment another civil war.
DeSantis made his graphic promise at a campaign event in New Hampshire on Sunday, saying “We’re going to have all these deep state people, you know, we are going to start slitting throats on day one.” On Friday, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough had trouble wrapping his head around how his former party “has become such a violent party with such violent rhetoric.”
“I can’t even imagine how our party got to a point where a frontrunner — guy in second place — would say ‘I’m going after the deep state and I’m going to start slitting throats on my first day in office,...

Following CNN’s airing of audio of Donald Trump confessing to having classified documents on Monday night, the man himself put the tape on blast on his social media. But “Morning Joe” panelist Jonathan Lemire noticed one key thing missing from Trump’s words: a denial that the tape is real.
In the audio obtained by CNN, and later by The New York Times, the twice-indicted former president can be heard talking to unnamed people about papers, and is heard rustling them. Those papers reportedly contained confidential plans regarding Iran, and Trump clearly indicates that he doesn’t have the ability to declassify them anymore.
Shortly after the audio was released, Trump angrily posted on Truth Social, writing that prosecutor Jack Smith “illegally leaked and ‘spun’ a tape and transcript of me which is actually an exoneration, rather than what they would have you believe.” But, on Tuesday morning’s episode of “Morning Joe,...

CNN Worldwide CEO Chris Licht defended the network’s town hall with Donald Trump amid criticism that the network was giving the former president a platform to spew lies and misinformation.
On the network’s morning editorial call, Licht said, “I absolutely unequivocally believe America was served very well by what we did last night, because it laid bare and created, in the words of Joe Scarborough, a political earthquake, and that people woke up and they know what the stakes are in this election in a way that they didn’t the day before.” Deadline obtained audio of the call.
Scarborough, host of Morning Joe, weighed in on Wednesday, saying that the event “showed the corrosive effects of Trumpism over eight years. The most shocking part was an audience that cheered on a president who tried to overturn a democracy.” Scarborough and Licht were co-creators of the MSNBC show...

CNN and CEO Chris Licht came in for ferocious criticism over the chaotic town hall the cable news network held with former president Donald Trump on Wednesday.
Amid his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump sat down with CNN This Morning anchor Kaitlan Collins at the event held in New Hampshire. The 70-minute town hall was populated by mostly Trump supporters and likely Republican voters, and the former president was able to dominate proceedings, overwhelming Collins who tried in vain to correct Trump’s statements and falsehoods about issues including the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, a federal abortion ban, immigration and the war in Ukraine.
A particularly shocking exchange occurred over E. Jean Carroll, who had this week been awarded $5 million in damages after a New York jury held Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation against the writer. Among other things, Trump once again claimed he did not know who Carroll...

MSNBC’s Joy Reid went after America’s gun culture in her monologue for Monday’s “The ReidOut,” punctuating her hard-to-argue-with points with an image from this month’s NRA convention in Indianapolis, in which a young boy is seen pointing a pistol directly at a camera.
“Americans buy millions of guns a month and keep buying more, feeding a booming industry that can’t market their bloody trade in other parts of the world where they have actual gun laws, so they pump all their resources into fostering American’s sick obsession, promoting not just guns but the reckless permission to use them — legally — on fellow Americans, with barely a second thought,” Reid said.
She then went for the vugular, mocking gun-loving right-wing conspiracy theorists by wielding one of their favorite refrains.

“Morning Joe” reported Monday that several top Republican Party donors are backing away from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ proposed 2024 presidential bid following his hard-line banning of abortions in his state after six weeks.
Speaking with co-host Joe Scarborough, political commentator and The Bulwark editor-in-chief Charlie Sykes said the continued culture wars happening within the GOP is a case of “the normies” of the party continuing to “empower the crazies.”
The segment began with co-host Mika Brzezinski citing a new Financial Times story that quotes one key Republican donor on DeSantis, saying, “Because of his stance on abortion and book banning, myself and a bunch of friends are holding our powder dry.”

“Morning Joe” slammed the GOP’s “deeply unserious” calls for a red state secession, calling it a money-making ploy to appeal to far-right donors.
On Monday morning, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) tweeted that “We need a national divorce. We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government,” drawing furious responses from the left and more moderate right.
“This is so laughable because blue states as we all know are the donor states, or the states where taxpayers take it on the chin to take care of districts like Marjorie Taylor Greene’s, to take care of districts across taxes where Ted Cruz talks about secession,” host Joe Scarborough said on Tuesday’s episode of “Morning Joe.”
“What is it that so deeply offends [Republicans], like three trans athletes in Utah want to swim? Is that real?” he asked guest commentator Charlie Sykes.

Updated, with comments from Tucker Carlson: Karine Jean-Pierre devoted the start of her first press briefing as White House Press Secretary on Monday by paying tribute to the 10 victims of the mass shooting in Buffalo, NY, as authorities point to the suspect’s embrace of a ‘great replacement” theory that elites are “replacing” white voters with more obedient non-white immigrants.
Jean-Pierre, though, declined to specially name any politicians or Fox News host Tucker Carlson who have espoused some version of “replacement theory,” to the condemnation of groups like the Anti-Defamation League.
ABC News’ Cecilia Vega asked, “On this notion that immigrants or others are believed to be by some ‘taking over’ and pushing white people out of positions of authority in this country, which is at the heart of so much of this terror that is being spewed online, does the White House believe these views are being amplified by Tucker Carlson?...
