The glass slippers still fit Brandy. The singer’s long-awaited return as Cinderella in a new Disney television movie has been given an official first look, courtesy of footage from the set of “Descendants: Rise of Red.” Brandy is reprising the role of Cinderella 26 years after becoming the princess opposite Whitney Houston’s Fairy Godmother in the 1997 television movie “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella.”
The set footage also confirmed that “Descendants: Rise of Red” will feature the return of Paolo Montalban, who played Brandy’s Prince Charming in the 1997 movie, which was groundbreaking for its multicultural casting. Charming is now king, and Cinderella is queen.

Brandy is getting refitted for a pair of glass slippers because she’s about to reprise her role as Cinderella for a new installment of The Descendants franchise! The uber-talented singer and actress is traveling to the kingdom of Auradon for The Pocketwatch, set in a corrupted Wonderland, where Jabberwockys hide in the shadows, caterpillars philosophize, and heads will roll.
In The Pocketwatch, Red (Kylie Cantrall), the teenage daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe (Malia Baker), the adolescent daughter of Cinderella, cross paths at a meaningful celebration at Auradon when unexpected chaos throws Wonderland into further disarray. “In order to prevent an impending coup, they must join forces to travel back in time, via a magical pocket watch created by the Mad Hatter’s son, to stop an event that would lead to grave consequences,” reads the feature’s official logline.

One of Disney’s most beloved princesses is coming back onscreen. Brandy will reprise her role as Cinderella for a new Disney+ film in the “Descendants” franchise.
Brandy previously famously portrayed the fairytale princess in a TV film adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” musical, which was watched by 60 million viewers when it first aired on ABC in 1997. The film’s inclusive and diverse casting — which included Brandy as the first Black woman to play Cinderella, Whitney Houston and Whoopi Goldberg as the Fairy Godmother and the Queen, and Paolo Montalbán as a Filipino Prince Charming — was widely regarded as groundbreaking, and the film has since become considered a classic. This August, Brandy reunited with the cast of the film for an ABC special to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The new “Descendants” film, currently under the working title “The Pocketwatch,” will be the first time in the role since the 1997 film.

North American audiences are seeing the spice flow on the big screen. Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “Dune” is expected to open at the top of the domestic box office, targeting a $33 million opening weekend haul. Other industry projections have the film opening as highly $39.1 million.
The studios’ adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal science-fiction novel of the same name launched to $17.5 million on Friday. “Dune” has generally earned auspicious reviews from critics, and the movie-going public is responding well too — the film landed an “A-” CinemaScore rating, indicating strong approval from audiences.
Warner Bros. has also debuted “Dune” simultaneously on HBO Max as part of a year-long strategy. The studio is releasing its entire theatrical slate day-and-date on its streamer as a means of bolstering subscription numbers and accounting for the muted box office of the pandemic era. The decision for a hybrid release of “Dune” was met by...

A lonely kid finds a robotic friend in Ron’s Gone Wrong, an animated family movie from Disney premiering at the London Film Festival. An endearing mix of earthy values and sci-fi concepts, it takes a cynical swipe at social media culture while delivering characters to care about. Chief of these is Barney Pudowski (voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer), a shy child being raised by his widower father Graham (Ed Helms) and immigrant grandmother Donka (Olivia Colman).
Barney is usually ignored by the other kids at school: they’re too absorbed in their AI sidekicks called B*Bots. These are cute, egg-shaped robotic pets — roughly the size of a cat or small dog — who are connected to the internet and can change color and character to suit the needs of their owners. Their purpose is to find friends and connect people to each other. Each kid is profiled purely by their online presence,...

Disney/20th Century Studios dropped the latest trailer Thursday for “Ron’s Gone Wrong” (October 22 in theaters), which centers on the friendship between the titular malfunctioning robot (voiced by Zach Galifianakis) and socially awkward middle-schooler Barney (voiced by Jack Dylan Graze). It marks the first animated feature from UK-based Locksmith Animation, directed by co-founder Sarah Smith (“Arthur Christmas”) and former Pixar story artist Jean-Philippe Vine (“Cars 3”). Peter Baynham (the “Borat” movies and “Arthur Christmas”) and Smith co-wrote the script with an emphasis on tech frustration and unhealthy dependence on social media.
“Coco” story artist Octavio Rodriguez served as co-director, Julie Lockhart (co-founder and president of Locksmith) produced with Lara Breay (“Penguins of Madagascar”), VFX studio Dneg (“Dune”) made its first animated feature, and the voice cast also includes Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Ed Helms (“The Office”), Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), Rob Delaney (“Deadpool 2“), Kylie Cantrall (“Gabby Duran...
