Taipei-based sales agent and local distributor Swallow Wings Films has picked up Chen Hung-i’s drama thriller “A New Day.” It joins a bulging slate that the company will pitch to buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin.
Chen, whose last films “As We Like It” and “The Last Painting” both played at the Rotterdam festival, previously pitched “A New Day” at the Golden Horse project market (Fpp) in 2021. It comprises a story about two men from different generations who fall in love due to a random encounter. It takes an accident to determine how their relationship will work out. The film, which leans on “Better Days” cinematographer Yu Jing-Pin, and stars Frederick Lee, Lavinia, Hank Wang and Oscar Chiu, is currently in post-production ahead of a 2023 release.

Some dreams are dashed and others are birthed in Heng Fai Hong’s drama about artists in crisis. Partly inspired by Anton Chekhov’s play “The Seagull” which also has its concrete place in the film, the script of “Kissing The Ground You Walked On” was shifting its shape many times over years before it took its final form. Before settling for “The Seagull”, Hong was discussing options with his theatre colleague about the play that could be used in the film since he wanted to have a theatre troupe as part of the plot. When it was decided that Chekhov’s classic would be the most ideal layout for character development, one of the leads was given similarities with Konstantin Treplev, and the other with Nina. Ukraine is to host its first ever queer film festival, it was announced at Intl. Film Festival Rotterdam.
Sunny Bunny – named after Kyiv-based Molodist Film Fest’s non-competition section, established in 2001 – is eyeing a summer slot.
“Maybe it’s a bit stereotypical to do it in June, as it’s Pride Month, but it will give us more time to prepare,” programmer Bohdan Zhuk revealed to Variety on Tuesday. Pointing out that the standalone event might still continue to be a part of Molodist in some form.
“The war is unpredictable, so you just have to adapt and be flexible. When we did Molodist in December, there were blackouts, so we needed generators. We also needed to plan where people would hide in case of raids, plan out shelters in cinemas or nearby metro stations,” he added.
“The plan is to do it separately, but also to keep that connection.
