It’s no secret that Parton enjoys make-up. She theorized that her fascination with cosmetic products stemmed from her childhood. Her father, Robert Lee Parton, forbade Parton and her sister from wearing makeup in the household when growing up. So when Parton finally left her home, she couldn’t help but indulge in what she’d been missing out.
“Maybe that has something to do with the fact that as soon as we got away from home, we practically made a career out of makeup and the other trappings of what we considered to be femininity,” Parton once wrote...

Dolly Parton just isn’t Dolly Parton without her big blonde hair, rhinestone-embellished outfits, and bold makeup. She grew up to express herself in exactly the way she idolized when she was a little girl. As soon as Parton discovered feminine things like makeup, a whole new world opened up for her. She knew who she wanted to be, and she knew how she wanted to look.

For much of the “Coat of Many Colors” singer’s childhood, she was a tomboy.
“Womanhood was a difficult thing to get a grip on in those hills, unless you were a man,” she wrote in her first memoir, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business.
But once she started to get an idea of “what it meant to be a woman,” Parton was hooked. The...

Dolly Parton and her siblings got new shoes once a year. Their father, Robert Lee Parton, would make the trek into town with his childrens’ foot sizes marked in sticks and pick out 12 pairs of shoes to last through the fall and winter. Whether the shoes actually fit or not, the Parton kids would always tell their dad the shoes fit perfectly.

Every year, the Parton kids needed new shoes. But there wasn’t a good way to haul all 12 of them into town to try them on.
“Transportation was a big problem, and Daddy was not about to try to drag all of us into town with him,” Parton wrote in her first memoir, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business. “He usually only went about once every six weeks or so, and it...

Dolly Parton used her late father’s old truck to honor him after he died. Before his death, she wanted to make him proud of her and perhaps pay him back for some of their unforgettable moments. So, she bought him a truck he loved so much he would never have traded, and she kept it as a tribute to him when he was gone.

Parton once shared a story illustrating how proud of his country music star daughter her father, Robert Lee Parton, was — even if he teased her a little. “Daddy used to go down to the courthouse where they had erected a statue of me,” she said (Apple Fitness+ Time to Walk experience via People). She added, “I remember myself being so proud of that statue. … I thought, ‘A statue of me in the courthouse yard?...

Following the double-platinum success of her Once Upon a Christmas LP with Kenny Rogers in 1984, it was a natural that Dolly Parton would eventually release another holiday-themed album. After her short-lived variety series in the late Eighties, the East Tennessee native finally went Home for Christmas with an LP and an ABC TV special in 1990. Unlike the previous album, which included several new original tunes, Home for Christmas was built around traditional Yuletide fare, including such songs as “The Little Drummer Boy,” “We Three Kings” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem.
