Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White both say mutual respect is what grounds their friendship, onscreen and off.
“Work can be a very intimate thing and a very personal thing and a very emotional thing,” Edebiri said in Tuesday’s new cover story for Vanity Fair. “I think when you’re also in industries that are creative or creative adjacent, I think there’s something that also invokes feelings of passion.”
Edebiri and White co-star as chefs Sydney and Carmy in FX’s The Bear, which will release its third season next month. Both actors won Emmys, Golden Globes and SAG Awards in their respective categories for the performance in season one (season two will be awards eligible next year).
White added that he has “a tremendous amount of respect for [Edebiri] as a person, but also as an artist. And so I hope that sort of that kind of thing...

Ayo Edebiri is calling rumors she was beefing with Jennifer Lopez “absurd” after a clip from a 2020 podcast surfaced in which The Bear star agreed with the host, saying J.Lo’s career was a “scam.”
Edebiri’s words went viral in the lead-up to her guest hosting Saturday Night Live, where Lopez was booked as the musical guest of the week.
“That would be like Mr. Bean and Mick Jagger beefing — and I’m obviously Mr. Bean. She’s J.Lo!” Edebiri told Vanity Fair.
Edebiri addressed the controversy on SNL, saying in a game show sketch, “Ok, Ok, we get it. It’s wrong to leave mean comments, or post comments just for clout, or run your mouth on a podcast and you don’t consider the impact because you’re 24 and stupid.”

Ayo Edebiri said during a new Vanity Fair cover story that Jennifer Lopez “was very chill and nice about it” when a potential online controversy threatened to derail their February episode of “Saturday Night Live.” Edebiri, coming off multiple award wins for “The Bear,” was the night’s host and Lopez was the musical guest amid the rollout for her album “This Is Me… Now.”
In the week leading up to the episode, a 2020 episode of the “Scam Goddess” podcast resurfaced on social media and went viral as it featured Edebiri speaking critically of Lopez. Responding to host Laci Mosley’s claim that Lopez’s “whole career is one long scam,” Edebiri responded: “Well, that’s the thing — she thinks she’s on multiple tracks, but it’s not her. I think she thinks that she’s still good, even though she’s not singing for most of these songs.

Exclusive: Tony- and Olivier Award-winning actor Bertie Carvel, who portrays Tony Blair opposite Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II in the final season of The Crown, remembers meeting the the real Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace “and nearly head-butting” her “in my attempt to try not to be too obsequious, but to follow the right form.”
He still has a photo of him being introduced to the monarch at an event nine years ago. “I look like the Mr. Bean sketch where he bows and knocks her out. I’m so towering over the queen and I look like I really should have gone to the barber, and I was red-faced and hairy.”
Well, The Crown’s crack hair and makeup team led by designer Cate Hall has ensured that he’s respectfully coiffured to portray Blair.
Proudly, he adds that on his fridge is the badge palace officials handed him at the event,...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Switzerland-Obsessed Weirdo Commits Murder and Spreads His Wings in a Tragicomic Case of the Butterfly Effect
It’s almost the 1st; do you know where your landlord is?
Since before the days of cavemen, our pack-minded species has been forced to share resources to ensure its survival. The advent of the supermarket means we’re no longer made to squabble over food and water like bipedal extras in “The Lion King.” But around the world people of all cultures and kinds continue to clamor into the makeshift hives we call...

This interview took place in June 2023 as part of the Tribeca Film Festival.
Sophia Lillis and Hannah Gross could be sisters in real life. The pair have a rapport that seems like it might have developed across years of inside jokes and shared experiences, which makes it easy to see why they work so well as siblings alongside Michael Cera in the movie "The Adults," which hits theaters Aug. 18.
Gross and Lillis play sisters who live together in their childhood home in a suburban town that feels slightly faded, like a memory lived in too long. Rachel (Gross), who took over responsibility for the house after their parents' deaths, works at the local radio station, while Maggie (Lillis) has dropped out of college, claiming it stifled her creativity.
The fractures in the pair's relationship become visible when their older brother, Eric (Cera), arrives for a very brief visit for the first time in three years.

Rowan Atkinson, who is generally worldwide as Mr. Bean, is said to be the man who made the world laugh without saying a single word. His laconic style of comedy has been very captivating to the audience, and he is much loved and recognized everywhere. The original Mr. Bean sketch also gave rise to some live-action shows and animated series that retained the spark Mr. Bean has. However, Atkinson’s career does not reside just in his Mr. Bean sketches and Johnny English shows. There are still some interesting aspects of his life that go beyond his comedy roles. This list...

After withdrawing from the latest James Bond movie over creative differences, Danny Boyle was delighted to direct Richard Curtis’ “delicious” screenplay for “Yesterday,” which wedges 17 of the best Beatles songs into a narrative about Jack Malik, a marginal British folk singer who wakes up from a global blackout as the only person who recalls the music of the Beatles. He tries to recover the lyrics, performs the songs, and becomes a huge (and fraudulent) pop star.
The movie performed above expectations last weekend, as the combo of Curtis, Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire”), Lily James (“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”), and the Beatles delivered a solid box office punch.
Curtis and Boyle met when the director recruited the writer to collaborate with comedian Rowan Atkinson as the iconic Mr. Bean at the London opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics. After Boyle asked Curtis to keep him in mind for directing, “He sent back the script,...

More than a few festival-goers must have woken up in rough shape after last night’s long trip to the club with Abdellatif Kechiche, and to their credit, the Cannes Film Festival seems to have taken that into account.
Maybe that’s why the festival kicked off its final day of screenings on Friday with so gentle and winning a film as Elia Suleiman’s “It Must Be Heaven.” With his first feature in 10 years, the Palestinian director returns with another exploration of nationality and identity that explores those questions with deadpan humor and poker-faced comic invention.
As in his three previous films, Suleiman takes the lead, playing a version of himself as channeled through the comic personas of Buster Keaton, Jacques Tati and, sure, Mr. Bean. Save for one line of dialogue, Suleiman anchors the film as a quiet observer who takes in the absurdities of the world around...

Despite the halfhearted mystery propelling its plot, the primary question that floats above “Johnny English Strikes Again” is … “Why?”
It is true that its two predecessors — “Johnny English” and “Johnny English Reborn” — did remarkably well overseas. (Americans remained flatly immune.) So clearly, there are still loyal Rowan Atkinson fans out there. But if you’re determined to recycle one of his characters over and over, wouldn’t the beloved Mr. Bean or Blackadder make more sense than a James Bond parody made up for British credit card ads? At the very least, doesn’t he, and don’t his fans, deserve better material?
What’s particularly disappointing about this effort is the amount of talent wasted. In addition to the always-game Atkinson, we’ve got accomplished BBC comedy director David Kerr (“That Mitchell and Webb Look”) and screenwriter William Davies (“How to Train Your Dragon”). And also, rather curiously, Emma Thompson and Michael Gambon.

"Can I just ask: what is wrong with you?" Universal/Focus Features has debuted a short second trailer for spy spoof comedy Johnny English Strikes Again, the third wacky comedy in the Johnny English series, returning after a seven year hiatus. Rowan Atkinson (who also plays Mr. Bean) is back again as Johnny English, the "man with few skills" and wacky, loser spy who helps save Britain, again. This time, a cyber-attack reveals the identity of all active undercover agents in Britain, and English (of course) is the only one who can help them get everything back in order. The cast in this includes Emma Thompson, Olga Kurylenko, Ben Miller, Jake Lacy, Adam James, and Miranda Hennessy. I really don't know why they made this - it doesn't seem like the right time or place for another spy spoof movie. The best part about this trailer is watching Emma Thompson tear him a new one,...
