- Entered the Army's Air Transport Command in 1940, serving with the Army Air Forces and the Navy during World War II. He also had served on the air crew that transported President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Tehran Conference.
After the war, he worked for what became the Central Intelligence Agency for seven years, then transferred to the White House staff about 1952. - A master calligrapher, his work had been exhibited at the National Archives and Smithsonian Institution. One plaque he designed was placed on the moon by U.S. astronauts.
- Served seven presidents at the White House before retiring in 1975 as protocol, calligraphy, graphic arts coordinator and social entertainment office chief.
Over the years, his duties had included designing and hand-lettering the proclamation awarding Sir Winston Churchill U.S. citizenship and designing the prayer card for President John F. Kennedy's funeral. He also had taken part in coordinating weddings for presidential daughters during the Johnson and Nixon administrations. From 1961 until retiring in 1975, he also had played Santa Clause for White House gatherings of underprivileged children and children of the diplomatic corps.
