He began playing guitar in his early teens, inspired by rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues artists, including Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and Bill Haley. His jazz guitar heroes were Barney Kessel, Wes Montgomery, and Jim Hall. He was also inspired by non-guitarists like Miles Davis and Bill Evans. He studied at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
