Television series’ depictions of single parents isn’t all that different from what viewers imagine, or have experienced, it to be. Struggling adults attempting to juggle a stable career while doubling as the book report editor, dinner maker and support system that their kids need isn’t exactly new. But the twist now is that scripted programming is putting the spotlight on single dads.
Comedies ranging from NBC’s “Mr. Mayor” and “Kenan,” to CBS’ “United States of Al” and “B Positive,” to Netflix’s “Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!” have lead characters who are single dads — albeit ones who maybe get by thanks to their entourages of quirky friends, relatives or coworkers.
“I personally like shows, even in comedies, that still feel like they’re about something,” says “Kenan” co-creator Jackie Clarke, who, like the daughters of lead Kenan Thompson’s similarly-named character on her show, spent part of her...

Kenan Thompson, who plays Kenan Williams in his eponymous NBC comedy, says that romance levels are set to ramp up now that the series has been renewed for Season 2. Thompson, speaking during the show’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event, said to expect more between the relationship between his character and Mika, played by Kimrie Lewis, his exec producer and secret crush.
“The romance department is going to crank up a notch or two,” Thompson said.
The Saturday Night Live star added that he also wants to see how far he can push his character next season in Kenan. “I want to see my character lose his mind completely and see how dark we can take it and of course have some revelation and be brought back to the light. I want to see how crazy we can go with it,” he said.

Kenan Thompson’s been on television for the better part of three decades. His broad smile and enthusiastic delivery immediately broke him out from the crowded cast of Nickelodeon’s “All That” years before he did the same on “Saturday Night Live,” the adult inspiration for the show that first made clear he was a star. Almost 20 seasons of “SNL” later, Thompson is striking out on his own to headline the first show that bears his name since “Kenan and Kel,” the slapstick 1996 sitcom in which he played, to use a fitting reference from the same era, the Brain to Kel Mitchell’s Pinky. Twenty-five years later, Thompson is an established veteran of the medium and one of its most immediately recognizable faces. What does it look like for him to have his own show now?

“While the Stone family endeavors to keep their friends safe and make their enemies believe the unbelievable, new challenges will test their trust of the callings and each other,” the description for Manifest teases.
“But sticking together is more important than ever, because no matter what happens, it’s all connected.”

Manifest Season 3 is headed to Thursdays. The high-concept drama, which spent its first two seasons on Mondays, will return to the air on April 1 in the 8/7c slot.
This means that Superstore's sixth -- and final -- season, and the freshman season of Mr. Mayor, will have wrapped their runs by that point.
“While the Stone family endeavors to keep their friends safe and make their enemies believe the unbelievable, new challenges will test their trust of the callings and each other,” the description for Manifest teases.
“But sticking together is more important than ever, because no matter what happens, it’s all connected.”

NBC has pushed The Kenan Show to the 2020/21 season as the network becomes the latest broadcaster to talk up its off-cycle development process.
The Kenan Show was picked up to series in May but NBC wanted to give Kenan Thompson time to craft the show and manage his workload, given he’s still on Saturday Night Live and Bring The Funny.
Paul Telegdy, who became sold Chairman of NBC Entertainment in October, revealed the move during his exec session at the Winter TCA press tour.
“When a star is given to this network time and time again, we reciprocate. What we gave Kenan back was time, time to create a show he wants, time to do the projects he’s doing and that he loves, and a little time for his family. So The Kenan Show will come next season, and I think it’s stronger, smarter and funnier than...

Stability is the name of the game at NBC as the network heads into the 2019-20 TV season.
With only one new drama and two new comedies on the fall schedule, the network is keeping things simple.
New Jimmy Smitts legal drama, Bluff City Law is taking the 10/9c post-The Voice slot.
NBC typically uses that slot to launch new dramas, but given that The Voice has been fading this season, there's a good chance it won't be the solid launch pad it once was.
This move leaves Manifest off the fall schedule to allow for uninterupted 2020 run, which is probably a good thing given the serialized nature of the series.
The Good Place is moving to 9/8c on a permanent basis for its fourth season. It will be sandwiched between new comedies, Perfect Harmony and Sunnyside.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Will & Grace are both being held for midseason.

Kenan Thompson is to remain on Saturday Night Live next season with NBC figuring out “scheduling issues” around sitcom The Kenan Show to accommodate the star’s three shows for the network.
The broadcaster revealed that The Kenan Show, which Thompson also exec produces, will launch in a “post-fall” slot and that he will remain on SNL. NBC Entertainment Co-Chairman George Cheeks told Deadline that it is working out how best to work it so that Thompson can do the sitcom, SNL and unscripted reality competition series Bring The Funny.
This comes after NBC handed The Kenan Show, formerly known as Saving Kenan, a series order on Friday. The single-camera comedy is produced by Universal TV and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video.

Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson is adding a third NBC series to his plate. The network has given a series order to The Kenan Show (aka Saving Kenan), a single-camera comedy starring and executive produced by Thompson, from Universal TV and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video. This is NBC’s second new comedy series pickup for next season, joining Kal Penn’s Sunnyside.
Thompson, who has become the heart and soul of SNL during his tenure, has repeatedly said he has no plans to quit SNL even with its ever-expanding portfolio.
“It’s the best job in the world,” Thompson said recently on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “I can’t see myself just walking away from it like that, even with how busy I’ve been with another show on NBC called Bring the Funny.”
The unscripted Bring The Funny, a reality competition series, is one of his now-three series on NBC.

Kenan Thompson is set become even more of a key player at NBC.
The network has picked up the “Saturday Night Live” mainstay’s single-cam comedy “The Kenan Show” to series.
There were rumours that the new show could signal the end of Thompson’s 16-year run on “SNL,” however, an individual familiar with the production told Variety that he’s expected to return.
In the new series, Thompson stars as as a newly widowed dad determined to be everything for his kids, while begrudgingly letting his persistent father-in-law (Andy Garcia) become more involved in their lives.
Other than Thompson and Garcia, the family comedy stars Punam Patel, Dani Lockett, and Dannah Lockett. Jackie Clarke will write and executive produce alongside Thompson, Lorne Michaels and Andrew Singer. Chris Rock is also on board as a director and Ep.
“The Kenan Show” is produced by Universal Television in association with Broadway Video.

NBC is getting even more of Kenan Thompson, picking up the “Saturday Night Live” vet’s comedy, “The Kenan Show” to series.
Here is the logline for the series, from NBC: In this family comedy, Kenan Thompson strives to be a super dad to his two adorable girls while simultaneously balancing his job and a father-in-law who “helps” in the most inappropriate ways. Thompson stars alongside Punam Patel, Dani and Dannah Lockett and Andy Garcia.
Despite the series pickup, Thompson is expected to remain on the long-running sketch comedy show when it returns in the fall for its 45th season. “SNL” has two episodes left in its current season.
