Yang Ya-che, known for Golden Horse-winning “The Bold, the Corrupt and the Beautiful,” and for shaping the careers of several actors, returns behind the camera with “The Chronicles of Libidoists.”
It was a standout at the Golden Horse project market, while at the production stage, the scandalous nature of its erotic take on “The Little Mermaid” tale meant that the names of the cast had to be kept secret.

Fierce protests: The 2024 Cannes Film Festival opens in less than a fortnight and is once again set to be the backdrop to fierce French labor protests. Zac revealed earlier this week that a collection of around 200 French film festival workers — a combination of Cannes workers and workers from other festivals across France — are planning protests during the event over pay. The group’s frustrations are two-fold: they are first rallying against the pay packages they receive from their employers, which they say are inadequate and do not account for arduous overtime hours frequently clocked due to job demands, while the second bone of contention is France’s unique unemployment insurance program for entertainment workers and technicians. Known as Intermittence de Spectacle, the scheme supports entertainment workers on...

Kenneth Huang was known for his particular taste in wine. Whether in his favorite corner of Cut, the Michelin-starred steakhouse at the Beverly Wilshire, or in the Peninsula Shanghai, Huang would summon a bottle of Opus One to the table. He would tell guests that he had a private reserve of the Napa Valley vineyard’s 2011 vintage, which retails for up to $2,000 a case. Someone who regularly dined with the financier says she drank so much Opus One that she got sick of the bourgeois Bordeaux.
If the wine was Huang’s signature, it was a footnote in a picture rendered to create a specific impression. An outsider in a town familiar with cautionary tales about Chinese riches, Huang was performative about his wealth in a way that put Hollywood power players at ease. He would allow them to think: if this man puts studio executives on private jets to...

His sorrow and overall perplexion regarding his future, as much as a broken promise to the deceased lead him to create the first of the four portraits that give the movie its title. Soon, he finds himself under the wing of old janitor Chang, who tries to teach him proper manners, while pilfering from abandoned buildings in order to sustain himself and the boy. While Xiao Xiang finds some sort of balance, his estranged mother, Chun-Lan, appears out of nowhere to take him to live with her and her new husband.

Global streaming giant Netflix has made a significant ongoing commitment to production of original content from Southeast Asia and in the Chinese language.
For 2024, Netflix has unveiled a slate of four Chinese-language series, all hailing from Taiwan. From Thailand, it detailed seven series and one film. From Indonesia, it has committed to five films and a series co-written and directed by the consistently successful Joko Anwar, marking his first partnership with the streamer.
Additionally, Netflix has confirmed the appointment of Maya Huang as its head of Chinese-language content.
The moves stand in sharp contrast to the mid-January happenings at rival global streamer Prime Video, which is cutting staff in the region and ending its brief experiment with Southeast Asian originals.
In Indonesia, Netflix says it is broadening its storytelling with a range of genres including comedy, action, fantasy, and sci-fi thrillers.

Law & Order: Svu has never been afraid to ask tough questions -- even if they upset some viewers.
Law & Order: Svu Season 25 Episode 2 was a prime example. Natalie spent most of the hour refusing to cooperate in the investigation into her rape because she didn't want to contribute to systemic racism by accusing a Black teenager.
Her distrust of the police led her to hurt her case in a myriad of ways, almost letting a rapist go free in the process. But that wasn't justice either.
This story demonstrated that two things can be true. There can be racism baked into the criminal justice system, And in an individual case, a Black person can be guilty of a serious crime.
That's what made this case so impossible. Natalie had to choose between justice for herself and taking a stand against the system as a whole by refusing to...

A number of directors are pursuing litigation against the digital indie film distributor 1091 Pictures for failing to make promised revenue-sharing payments after selling their films to the platform, now owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. Helmers are scrambling to reclaim distribution rights to their work out of fear that 1091 Pictures’ parent company could declare bankruptcy.
Filmmakers say they are owed their share of distribution revenue from licensing deals with 1091 but Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment has not come through with payments. Some have taken the company to court, including small-claims court, to press their cases.
Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment acknowledges that the company, which also owns Redbox and Crackle, has faced “cash flow issues,” as CEO Bill Rouhana told Variety. The company already disclosed that it was unable to file its third-quarter earnings information on time.

The number of people credited as “Anonymous” in Jialing Zhang’s documentary “Total Trust” is chilling. Banned from China after making the documentary “One Child Nation,” Zhang relied on those in the country to help bring to life this examination of life in a surveillance state. The fear is real; in a coda at the end, we’re told that Sophia Xueqin Huang, a reporter critical of the government and one of the three women upon which the documentary focuses, was arrested on her way to study in the U.K. on charges of “inciting subversion of state power.”
In ways big and small, “Total Trust” tells audiences, the Chinese government is watching its citizens. Cc TV does its part; biometrics also plays a major role. But the true villains turn out to be the Chinese citizens who eagerly police their own neighbors.

Josie Huang, a reporter for NPR member station LAist 89.3, reached a $700,000 settlement agreement with Los Angeles County and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department after she was arrested while covering a protest in 2020.
The Board of Supervisors approved the settlement following negotiations with attorneys from Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, who represented Huang.
As she was covering a demonstration on Sept. 12, 2020, Huang was using her phone to record the arrest of one protester when she was tackled to the ground by sheriff’s deputies. She was arrested and jailed overnight on charges of obstructing a police officer. Two deputies tried to step on the phone, but she later recovered it and the video of the incident.

A high-powered panel at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Contents and Film Market pondered the condition of the theatrical market for arthouse films in Asia and Europe post-pandemic.
The two themes that emerged from the discussion were the necessity for films to have an X factor that can be marketed and, second, that restored classics are finding new audiences.
June Lee, content business team lead at Korea’s Watcha said that the company’s acquisition strategy for this year and the next is to either pick up a Hollywood blockbuster or “really arthouse films with elements that could go viral.”

Bradley Liew of Epicmedia Productions (Philippines), Stefano Centini of Volos Films (Taiwan/Italy) and Singapore’s Huang Junxiang have reunited to launch two genre projects at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Contents and Film Market.
The trio previously teamed on Sundance Midnight hit, “In My Mother’s Skin” by Kenneth Dagatan, which was recently ranked number six on Variety’s Best Horror Movies of 2023. The film was acquired by Amazon Studios and will stream on Prime Video from Oct. 12.
The producers are backing Dagatan’s “Molder,” a body-horror supernatural thriller set in a sleepy Italian town where an elderly Filipino immigrant struggling with signs of early onset dementia, grapples with the sudden disappearance of his wife and the mysterious young man who claims to have placed a curse upon them. The film aims to blend both Filipino folklore based supernatural horror with the experiences of the Filipino diaspora in Italy.

As artificial intelligence continues to be a focal point in Hollywood amid the actors and writers strikes, terms such as “responsible AI” and “ethical AI” became key messaging for computer graphics thought leaders gathered in Los Angeles for the 50th Siggraph conference.
“The generative AI era is upon us, the iPhone moment of AI, if you will,” Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, said during his Aug. 8 keynote. Before thousands of delegates, he introduced the tech giant’s newest related tech, including its GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and AI Workbench toolkit. “Startups are doing amazing things,” Huang added. “Of course they’re doing content creation, but they’re also using generative AI to steer a self-driving car … generate proteins, chemicals, discover new drugs.”

It’s happening again. The NBCUniversal campus, already a flashpoint for Hollywood’s ongoing labor unrest, as the writers and actors guilds have alleged picket-busting, is now the site of a new strike controversy. This time, Unite Here Local 11, the Southern California hospitality union that’s also currently staging walkouts, is claiming that the Sheraton Universal is retaliating against its workers for protesting.
According to an unfair labor practices charge filed Aug. 18 with the National Labor Relations Board, the organization contends that the hotel has issued disciplinary notices against 16 employees, including multiple suspensions, in retribution for picketing outside of the property, which is a short stroll past the primary NBCUniversal gate, where Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA members have themselves been massing and marching.

Stellan Skarsgård and Gustaf Skarsgård introduced their latest film “What Remains” at Locarno Film Festival on Friday.
Directed by Ran Huang, it was written by Huang and Megan Everett Skarsgård. Andrea Riseborough also stars.
“It took a lot of pain,” admitted Gustaf Skarsgård to the audience after the screening.
“But it helped having Ron there, and dad, and Andrea, so I could really immerse myself in this fucked up journey.”
Despite the team making it all the way to Switzerland, journalists attending an intimate press conference were asked not to inquire about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, with Gustaf Skarsgård also dodging a question referencing his recent role in “Oppenheimer.”
However, the “Vikings” actor did discuss “the most challenging” role he has ever done.
“By a mile! It was a painful treat,” he said.

Following the enormous critical and financial success in the local theaters, the release of “The Meg” in Chinese cinemas started a wave of similarly-produced creature features and animal-attack films to capitalize on its release. That has led to a steady stream of cheap, goofy creature features that remains popular churning out titles to this day which includes this one from 2021 that takes its influence from the Australian film “The Reef” from 2011 and “The Shallows” from 2017.

Welcome to My Favorite Scene! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.
Daniel Radcliffe is no stranger to stunt work.
The “Harry Potter” star has racked up a fascinating filmography since graduating from the Wizarding World in 2011, from multiple Broadway musicals to TBS’s “Miracle Workers” to the Daniels’ infamous “Swiss Army Man” — all of which demand comedic versatility but have only sporadically called upon his extensive experience in blockbuster franchise action. The same was true of Eric Appel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” — until one major fight scene filmed in just over four hours.
“If we were on ‘Potter,’ we might have spent a week doing that scene,” the actor told IndieWire via Zoom — to immediate laughter from Appel.

China, who have won 12 of the past 17 editions and have never missed the semifinals, will next take on Japan, who edged Thailand 3-2 earlier on Friday.
Mixed doubles pair Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong suffered a scare before rallying past Rinov Rivaldy and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja in the opening tie.
The Indonesian duo took the first set 21-13, but Zheng and Huang recovered to clinch the second 23-21. The Chinese pair kept their momentum to win the decider 21-11, reports Xinhua.
“Neither of us felt very nervous, but maybe because of that, we didn’t notice that our bodies were too relaxed to play,” Huang commented on the thriller.

New Delhi, May 2 (Ians) In a unique collaboration to safeguard the misuse of location-tracking devices, Apple and Google on Tuesday said they have jointly submitted an industry specification to help combat the misuse of Bluetooth location-tracking devices for unwanted tracking.
The first-of-its-kind specification will allow Bluetooth location-tracking devices to be compatible with unauthorised tracking detection and alerts across iOS and Android platforms.
Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security, and Pebblebee have expressed support for the draft specification, which offers best practices and instructions for manufacturers.
“Apple launched AirTag to give users the peace of mind knowing where to find their most important items,” said Ron Huang, Apple’s vice president of Sensing and Connectivity.
“This new industry specification builds upon the AirTag protections, and through collaboration with Google results in a critical step forward to help combat unwanted tracking across iOS and Android,” Huang added.

“Beef” unfolds as a series of poor choices after “plantrepreneur” Amy (Ali Wong) and handyman Danny (Steven Yeun) get into a road rage incident. Initially grounded in acute reality, the Netflix series gradually spins off into a wild finale that was initially way too much for even A24. The show’s progression allowed costume designer Helen Huang to do richer, more nuanced work than the contemporary setting might suggest. The protagonists’ senses of style offer up a vivid picture of the people they want to be — but hint at the emotions they try (and fail) to keep below the surface.
“Amy and Danny need to seem like they’re from really separate worlds. A big part of the script is how, when they come together, there’s these misperceptions of each other. So I wanted Amy’s and Danny’s wardrobe to feel extremely specific,” Huang told IndieWire. “It’s...

New Delhi, April 10 (Ians) Weak demand, excess inventory and a worsening macroeconomic climate resulted in the global shipments of traditional PCs recording 56.9 million in the first quarter of 2023, a huge 29 per cent drop compared to the same quarter last year, a report has shown.
Lenovo led the global PC market with 22.4 per cent market share, followed by Hp Inc at 21.1 per cent and Dell Technologies at 16.7 per cent.
Shipment volume in the Q1 2023 was noticeably lower than the 59.2 million units shipped in Q1 2019 and 60.6 million in Q1 2018, according to the preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (Idc).
“Though channel inventory has depleted in the last few months, it’s still well above the healthy four to six week range,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for Idc’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers.
“Even with heavy discounting, channels and PC makers can expect elevated inventory to persist into the middle...
