Shonda Rhimes combined historical details of Queen Charlotte and King George III’s early years of marriage with scenes featuring Violet, Lady Danbury, and the succession crisis set between seasons 2 and 3.
Den of Geek interviewed Bridgerton showrunner and executive producer Jess Brownell to find out the plans for tying in Queen Charlotte’s backstory into the main Bridgerton series.

Any marriage that lasts nearly six decades is certainly a story for the ages, especially if it’s rooted in reality, like the one at the center of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
The origins of the 57-year romance between Britain’s King George III and Queen Charlotte are the subject of the series, which was created by Shonda Rhimes and based on characters first introduced on-screen in Bridgerton.
While the British king and queen are very real figures, the six-episode interpretation of their romance is fictional. As the series reminds you in its opening moments, “It is not a history lesson. It is fiction inspired by fact.”
Portrayed in their 1800s iterations by Golda Rosheuvel and James Fleet and as their 1700s predecessors by India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest, the royal couple aren’t all that was pulled from history books to create the world of Queen Charlotte. Read...

Senior royal family members are a network of high-ranking members a monarch can rely on to carry out duties for them. Working royals are higher up in the line of ascension than non-working royals. As they work every day to assist Crown Inc., there are questions as to how they are compensated. How much money do senior royals make? How do they get paid?
Personal income and taxpayer money paid senior royals
The number of current working royals under King Charles is less than during Queen Elizabeth’s reign. This stark difference is due to a dwindling pool of senior royal family members and an aging workforce.
The working royals draw on an expense account called The Sovereign Grant, a lump sum paid by the United Kingdom’s government and taxpayers.
The Grant pays for costs associated with official duties such as staff, security, and travel. As of April 2024, the Sovereign Grant was worth $108 million.

Watching characters from Bridgerton and other period dramas whirl their prospective love interests around the ballroom floor has inspired fans to take up Regency-era dancing themselves, a UK-based dance teacher reports.
Historical dance teacher Lottie Adcock told BBC Radio York that she has seen a rise in the number of students wanting to learn the style of dances seen in Bridgerton, any number of Jane Austen adaptations and other period dramas set in the Regency era of the early 1800s. She added that the average age of prospective students had also dropped.
Adcock runs a school called Dance the Past and she explained: “Regency dancing is definitely having a resurgence and the people who watched Mr Darcy think, ‘Actually I want to have a go at doing that.

The Curse of Oak Island team started celebrating on last night’s episode as they found clear evidence of the long sought-after tunnel under the Garden Shaft.
Finally, after weeks of frustration, the flooding in the shaft was dealt with, and Dumas began probe drilling at the bottom.
The Dumas guys began drilling at 90 feet and aimed straight down, hoping to hit something at about 95 feet. The Oak Island team stood on the surface, impatiently watching the monitors, and they were rewarded when the drill struck something at 97 feet.
The drill casing was brought back up to reveal a pretty hefty chunk of wood, which will be sent straightaway for Carbon-14 dating. They’ll be hoping for a date pre-1790s.
While this is not a definitive confirmation that they’ve located the tunnel, it does seem pretty likely.

The new biographical drama “Golda” features Helen Mirren in a transformative role as Golda Meir, the so-called “Iron Lady of Israel” who faced high-stakes responsibilities and decisions during the Yom Kippur War. Written by Nicholas Martin and directed by Guy Nattiv, the Bleecker Street contender is Mirren’s first big play at a potential Academy Award nomination in many years, so let’s look back at her four Oscar races.
With a career in film going back to the 1960s, Mirren saw her first Oscar nomination in 1994 in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in “The Madness of King George.” Directed by Nicholas Hytner, this biographical comedy-drama tells the story of King George III and how his Lieutenants tried to adjust the rules to run the country after he went mad. Throughout the respective seasons of The Crown and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the audience watches two royal women, Princess Diana and Charlotte, take charge of their narratives. Their evolution also is visible in their hair.
Diana’s hair grows out from her iconic crop in the fifth season of the Netflix drama, eventually getting sleeker and more glamorous as she liberates herself from her marriage to Prince Charles. “For me, that evolution is of someone who is taking her independence and realizing her own value, her star value and what she was doing,” says The Crown hair designer Cate Hall. “She sort of looked like a film star by the end of that period.” It coincides with a change in hairdressing: “Her hair was silkier. Everything looked more glossy.”

"Independence Day", aka the 'Fourth of July' is a holiday commemorating the United States 'Declaration of Independence’ July 4, 1776:
The 'Continental Congress' declared that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject and subordinate to the monarch of Britain, 'King George III'...
...and were now united, free, and independent states.
"It will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America," said US 'Founding Father' John Adams at the time of the Declaration.
"I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.
"It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to 'God Almighty'.
"It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade...
...with shows, games, sports, guns...
...bells, bonfires and illuminations...
"...from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more..."

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, a prequel spin-off of the popular Netflix series Bridgerton, tells the story of Queen Charlotte and King George III, a plotline that was hinted at in Season 2 of the parent show. The prequel explores the origin of a young Charlotte (India Amarteifio) during her arranged marriage to George (Corey Mylchreest).
As a Bridgerton series, the central love story, including the sex scenes, is the most important. Amarteifio and Mylchreest said that creating the chemistry between the two characters went smoothly as the royals’ relationship gradually transformed as the show progressed. At first, they only had sex on even days for the sole purpose of creating an heir. But as they grow closer, their relationship becomes more intimate.
Mylchreest thanked intimacy coordinators Lucy Fennell and Lizzie Talbot for their work, noting that Bridgerton had previously received criticism for making gratuitous sex scenes.

“Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” has one of the most complicated, and yet stylistically unified, scores of any series this year — Kris Bowers‘ original score, the 18th-century period music, and a surprising number of string-quartet covers of 21st-century hits.
The Netflix series, a prequel to the 2021 hit “Bridgerton,” imagines a Black bride for England’s King George III in 1761, chronicling their initially rocky marriage and her gradual understanding of the monarch’s mental illness; flash-forwards to 1817 feature an older and wiser queen.
Bowers, who earned two Emmy nominations for his work, returned for the prequel but took a different approach. “This show needed a level of intimacy that the score for ‘Bridgerton’ doesn’t necessarily have,” he says. “My initial instinct was to write for a smaller ensemble, and to mic and mix the music in a way that was more intimate and tactile, a sense of closeness to the instruments.

It took a village to build the costumes for Shonda Rhimes’ latest “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” Costume designer Lyn Elizabeth Paolo and co-costume designer Laura Frecon paired up to tell young Queen Charlotte’s (India Amarteifio) story and her rise to power in Britain, after her marriage to King George III. But even though Rhimes told Paolo it was going to be a “small spin-off,” the costume designer who had worked with her on “Scandal” and “How to Get Away With Murder” knew that Rhimes would want “everything to be glorious.”
There were going to be grand scenes, such as a funeral and a coronation. Frecon says, “We were told there were no balls,” referring to the grandiose costume fetes that marked almost every episode of “Bridgerton.”
Says Frecon, “But we got the research done. Then it was about gathering the fabrics and linen. We went to Sudbury, U.

Bridgerton composer Kris Bowers is back for its spinoff drama series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which delves into the life and rise to power of, well, Queen Charlotte. With its exploration of mental illness and fitness to rule, the show is tonally much darker than its predecessor, says Bowers, which provided its own set of challenges in composing the score.

“One of the things that I really gleaned, even from my first read of the scripts, was just how much it felt more grounded than Bridgerton. If you’ve become enamored with the love story at the center of Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, you’ve likely questioned just how much of the period drama is based in fact versus the fantastical mind of creator Shonda Rhimes, given the opening disclaimer from Lady Whistledown that the series “is not a history lesson” but rather “fiction inspired by fact.” While there’s no denying the masterful storytelling of Rhimes — the six-episode Bridgerton prequel was a runaway No. 1 among all titles on Netflix in its first week — the real-life story of the 18th century British royal provided great source material.

In collaboration with longtime Shondaland costume designer Lyn Elizabeth Paolo, Shondaland and Allure Bridals have announced a first-ever bridal gown collection inspired by the opulence of Netflix’s Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte. The Bridgerton Weddings collection will bring to life Paolo’s exquisite Regency- and Georgian-era designs that have come to define the multifaceted Queen Charlotte in the Bridgerton prequel series. Paolo previously worked as a costume consultant on Bridgerton and is an intimate part of bringing the sumptuous Bridgerverse to life.
The idea behind the collection was initiated by Shonda Rhimes and Sandie Bailey, Shondaland’s chief innovation and design officer, when they approached Paolo with the opportunity to design a bridal gown collection influenced by Queen Charlotte’s era in the Bridgerton series.

"Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story" provides us with plenty of new information about the origins of fan-favorite "Bridgerton" characters. Queen Charlotte, King George III, Lady Danbury, and Violet Bridgerton all appear in the miniseries, along with the Queen's ever-loyal right-hand man, Brimsley. Brimsley gets a love story of his own in the past, with the "King's Man" Reynolds, but in the present day, we don't see or hear about Reynolds, sparking plenty of theories about what happened to Reynolds in the intervening decades.

Bridgerton’s imperious Queen Charlotte gets her origin story in Netflix’s prequel series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. The six-episode drama follows a young Charlotte (India Amarteifio), a German noblewoman who is married off to King George III (Corey Mylchreest). Her arrival in the U.K. sparks the “Great Experiment” – the racial integration of the country’s aristocracy. As characters such as a young Lady Danbury (Arsema Thomas) navigate a new social reality, Charlotte must adjust to life in a strange country while also dealing with her husband’s secret illness.
Queen Charlotte will surely help sate Bridgerton fanatics as they wait for the show’s third season. In the meantime, if you’re craving more royal romance, here are five shows to binge after you’ve watched the Bridgerton prequel.

The "Bridgerton" franchise is well-versed in producing heartthrobs. Take the first two seasons, for example. We are forever grateful to production company Shondaland for giving us a number of intimate scenes featuring leading men Regé-Jean Page and Jonathan Bailey. And the release of the "Bridgerton" prequel, "Queen Charlotte," has given us yet another actor to swoon over. Enter: Corey Mylchreest, who plays the young King George opposite India Amarteifio's Queen Charlotte.
The 25-year-old Londoner has already won legions of fans for his steamy turn as King George and his nuanced portrayal of the monarch's mental illness in the Netflix show. Loosely based on the real King George III, the "Bridgerton" spinoff, which was released on May 4, follows the story of Queen Charlotte's arranged marriage. While there are steamy sex scenes mixed with period drama attitude, Nylchreest is also swiftly becoming one to watch. "Corey Mylchreest is my main man now.

From Jennifer Coolidge and Brian Cox to Sheryl Lee Ralph and Henry Winkler, this year’s Emmy race is filled with past winners hoping to pick up another trophy from the TV Academy. However, there is also a plethora of talent entering the awards conversation for the first time, thanks to their work on series including “Queen Charlotte,” “Shrinking” and “The Last of Us.”
After the success of “Bridgerton,” it’s no surprise that Shonda Rhimes’ spinoff series, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” is filled with talented new faces. India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest portray Queen Charlotte and King George III while Arsema Thomas portrays the young Agatha Danbury.
Together, the three actors were able to find comfort in leaning on one another, which helped with the pressure of joining a series with an established audience.
“For a lot of us, this was our first big job so there was this shared camaraderie.

Dearest gentle reader: “Queen Charlotte” has been declared a jewel of Netflix’s spring season.
The “Bridgerton” spinoff had a regal first week of streaming, logging 148.28 million hours viewed on Netflix. The streamer announced the viewership numbers via its weekly Top 10 Global English Language TV Show viewership chart, dated May 1-7, which the good Queen unsurprisingly topped at No. 1; the limited series made that ascension with just four days of viewing, after dropping all episodes May 4.
If every viewer who started “Queen Charlotte” finished it during the week, the show would have received roughly 22 million viewers, according to Netflix’s estimates based on the show’s running time. That means the fictionalized King George’s coronation this weekend was likely watched by fewer people compared to that other coronation going on, although it did manage to surpass Charles and Camilla’s UK ratings at the very least.

[This story contains spoilers from the Queen Charlotte book by Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes.]
In Queen Charlotte (Avon Books), out Tuesday, co-author Julia Quinn tells the origin story of Bridgerton’s Queen Charlotte and her love story with King George III.
Quinn, who wrote nine books for her Bridgerton series, says working on this novel was significantly different because she had a collaborator in Bridgerton show creator Shonda Rhimes. “The fact that it says ‘By Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes’ still kind of blows my mind,” the author tells The Hollywood Reporter of the novel.
And after learning that there was interest in a Queen Charlotte spinoff series, Quinn admits she “couldn’t believe it.”
“It was amazing enough that my books were adapted for television, and then it was even more amazing that they did so well, but to have a spinoff? I was like, ‘Oh my God,'” she recalls.

Netflix's "Queen Charlotte," released by the streamer on May 4, has already won itself a legion of fans. The show follows Queen Charlotte and King George III during the first months of their marriage and also as adults in the "Bridgerton" timeline. The series also sheds a light on Lady Danbury and her family - including what happened to her husband, Lord Danbury - and on Violet Bridgerton as a young girl living with her parents, the Ledgers. Plus, there's Reynolds, the King's secretary, and Brimsley, the Queen's right-hand, who get wrapped up in a covert romance under everyone's noses.
Though most of "Queen Charlotte"'s plotlines conclude by the miniseries' final episode, the question still remains: Will there be a season two? We asked some of the cast.

Here’s how “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Bridgerton” creator Shonda Rhimes thinks about sex scenes: carefully.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly in support of her just-launched Netflix series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” the doyen of steamy TV expounded on her philosophy for writing sexy sequences, telling the outlet she really doesn’t “write them any differently,” no matter if they are for broadcast or streaming TV. “I really don’t. I’m kind of a prude,” she said. “So, what I write into the scenes is what I want the audience to get in terms of the character emotion or the character story that’s playing out. I basically write like, ‘This is how we want them to feel.'”
And she’s found plenty of key assistance along the way, including the use of intimacy coordinators on set, of which Rhimes is a major fan. “I’m...

On Bridgerton novelist Julia Quinn’s website, a fan asks “Will you write a book about Lady Danbury? I’d love to read about her when she was younger.”
Unfortunately not, was Quinn’s original answer, following the logic that Lady Danbury – a widowed matriarch who wields serious power in the ton and always hosts the first ball of the season, played by Adjoa Andoh – is already on record in the Bridgerton books as saying that her husband was an idiot. Delving into that marriage and her past wouldn’t offer much scope, said Quinn.

“Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story”, now streaming on Netflix, tackles King George III’s mental health struggle, and actor Corey Mylchreest — who portrays the young royal in the drama — has now spoken out about filming such scenes.
The “Bridgerton” spinoff tells the origin story of a young Charlotte (India Amarteifio) and her arranged marriage to George.
In real life, the King was never specifically diagnosed with a mental illness, but it’s been reported that he suffered multiple bouts of quite severe mental illness during his time on the throne.
“The series in itself is like a different beast,” Mylchreest told Variety of the spinoff. “It feels like ‘Bridgerton’ but it has maybe darker moments to it, and it’s a little bit grittier. So it feels like its own thing.”

Shonda Rhimes had no interest in writing a fairy-tale love story when she sat down to write “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” Rather, the superstar producer, writer and 2017 Television Academy Hall of Fame Inductee had a very different goal when writing the prequel series to the Netflix period drama “Bridgerton.” In creating this series about the marriage between a young Charlotte) and King George III (Corey Mylchreest), Rhimes– who wrote or co-wrote five of the show’s six episodes– argues, “I wanted to tell a story about complicated love.” Watch more of Gold Derby’s exclusive video interview above.

Jonathan Groff is the latest cast member announced to be joining Doctor Who series 14 in an as-yet undisclosed mysterious “key role”, the BBC has announced.
Groff is best known to children the world over as the voice of Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen films, and to Broadway audiences as King George III from the original cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mega-hit musical Hamilton.
That makes him the third big American Broadway star making his debut in the new Doctor Who episodes, following Neil Patrick Harris’ villainous role in the forthcoming 60th anniversary specials, and the recent announcement that Chicago the stage musical and RuPaul’s Drag Race star Jinkx Monsoon had joined the cast of series fourteen.

Bridgerton is a well-received alternative history show on Netflix that made much blush and gush thanks to a very cheesy storyline that somehow appealed to many. One of the interesting characters in the show was the gossip-loving Queen Charlotte, who always wanted to hear rumors flying around during the society season and read gossip booklets published by one Lady Whistledown. Netflix now brings you a spin-off on the tale of Queen Charlotte, who has a tough life being a queen and the only wife of King George III. The show begins with her marriage, but it focuses on her initial years with King George III. What were the obstacles she faced as a newly married woman?

Bridgerton seasons one and two were well-received Netflix originals. A show that gave the audience an alternate history version by reimagining a world where people from different races were part of the high society in England. Even though I had issues with the show, Bridgerton was path-breaking in its way. When stories from the pre-Victorian and Elizabethan eras are told and retold, Bridgerton comes across as a breath of fresh air when it comes to storytelling and music as well. We got to see Queen Charlotte, the cheeky older Queen of England who had a penchant for gossip but was also known for her strong personality. Keeping her character in mind, the makers of Bridgerton give us a spin-off, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which takes us back to a few decades ago when Charlotte was a young woman and was on the way to becoming King George III’s wife.

With Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which debuted all six episodes on Thursday, we know exactly how the titular monarch’s marriage to King George III sparked the diverse world presented in Bridgerton.
It all began with an arranged marriage in the series premiere. A young, strong-willed Charlotte (played by India Amarteifio) was not happy to learn that her brother Adolphus (Tunji Kasim) set her up to marry the King of England (Corey Mylchreest). On the carriage ride to the palace, she threatened to leap from the moving vehicle and impale herself with her delicate and sharp corset made of whalebone.

"Bridgerton" viewers know Lady Danbury as the all-knowing, very wise, and very funny matriarch who rules the Ton with a quick wit and a great hat collection. But the new spinoff miniseries, "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story," dives into Lady Danbury's days before she was one of society's steeliest widows. In the show, Adjoa Andoh returns as Lady Agatha in the "Bridgerton" timeline, while Arsema Thomas plays her as a younger woman, circa 1761. At that time, Agatha is married to Lord Danbury (Cyril Nri), and she's clearly miserable. They share four children, who she rarely sees, and her husband demands he has sex with her - rough and painful - almost every night. After their encounters, her maid Coral (Peyvand Sadeghian) runs her a bath so she can recuperate alone.

From the earliest episodes of "Bridgerton" we've known that King George III has been affected for years by a serious illness. The prequel series "Queen Charlotte" dives more into George's illness from a young age, revealing more about what's going on and how it affects his relationships.
Although the "Bridgerton" universe takes artistic license with plenty of historical events, there's also some truth to its depiction of this particular storyline.

There really was a Queen Charlotte who married King George III in 1761 before they had a chance to get to know each other. The new Netflix series "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story" is inspired by the real Charlotte and George, but uses them to tell their own story based on - but not exactly following - historical fact, set in the world of "Bridgerton."
The show itself, which premiered on May 4, acknowledges that it's not exactly "true" from the very first moments, when the voice of Lady Whistledown (Julia Andrews) says, "This is the story of Queen Charlotte from Bridgerton. It is not a history lesson." She goes on and says, "It is fiction inspired by fact. All liberties taken by the author are quite intentional."
However, if you do want to separate what's fact from fiction in "Queen Charlotte," find the true story behind the series ahead.
