Cox was the rare African-American front man for a band that was mostly white over the years. He started his music career while at Cleveland's John Marshall High School. In 1956, he formed a Motown-inspired band and led it as a singer and drummer. One of the musicians bought a Silvertone amp, inspiring the name Sharptones.
