True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. So, if you love the thrilling and dreadful story of Under the Bridge, here are some other shows that have similar tone and story elements that you should check out next.

Cailee Spaeny Talks ‘Civil War,’ Taylor Swift’s ‘Mare of Easttown’ Fandom and Manifesting ‘Matrix 5’
If Civil War star Cailee Spaeny isn’t already on every casting shortlist in town, then her 2024 is about to etch her name in stone.
Coming off of her Golden Globe-nominated performance as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, the Missouri native returns to the big screen with another critically acclaimed A24 film in Alex Garland’s Civil War. The duo previously collaborated together on Garland’s sci-fi miniseries Devs, and fulfilling a promise he made years ago to write his cast new roles, Spaeny is one of six Devs actors in the British filmmaker’s new action-thriller.
Spaeny plays aspiring war photographer, Jessie Cullen, and after being saved on the streets of New York City by her photojournalist hero, Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), she maneuvers her way into joining Lee’s road trip to Washington, D.C. Along with two other journalists, Joel (Wagner Moura) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson...

Exclusive: Independent Artist Group has signed Ruby Cruz, one of the young stars of Orion’s critical darling Bottoms, for representation.
Cruz appears opposite Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri in the teen comedy, directed by Emma Seligman, which hit theaters in the U.S. via MGM in August following a buzzy debut at the SXSW Film Festival. Co-written by Seligman and Sennott, the film watches as two unpopular queer high school students start a fight club in order to get laid before graduation.
Cruz played Hazel Callahan, a shy outsider who is friends with Edebiri’s Josie and Sennott’s Pj.
On the television side, Cruz was most recently seen starring in the Disney+ series Willow, produced by Imagine Entertainment and Lucas Television, which served as a sequel to the same-name 1988 fantasy adventure flick starring Warwick Davis. Rachel Sennott and The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri are excellent as gay teens who set up a fight club in order to win the affections of their school cheerleaders
There are a lot of laughs, a great deal of delirious silliness and what I must insist is a cinephile reference to Orson Welles’s Touch of Evil in this very funny high-school comedy from director Emma Seligman, and starring her co-writer Rachel Sennott, who last worked together on Seligman’s debut feature Shiva Baby. Bottoms is about two gay teen girls and bickering best friends who want to get some sexual experience and it all plays like a moderately scuffed-up and entirely non-heterosexual version of Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart – though no one in this film shows the smallest interest in books, certainly not the teachers.

Warwick Davis is the face of the “Willow” franchise, which kicked off in 1988 with Ron Howard’s fantasy film and continued with the short-lived Disney+ sequel series in 2022. Disney canceled the television series after only one eight-episode season, and then it pulled the show off of Disney+ entirely for cost-cutting measures. Davis is now calling out Disney on X (formerly Twitter), asking the studio in a recent post to answer the many fans wondering why they can no longer watch the show via streaming.
“I meet lovely people on a daily basis who are fans of ‘Willow,’ who are the reason the Disney+ series was made,” Davis posted. “Please tell me [Walt Disney Company], what do I say to these subscribers when they ask why they can’t watch the series any more? #embarrassing.”

Willow actor and silver screen legend Warwick Davis is not holding back about Disney’s removal of the Willow series. Davis recently took to social media to break his silence about the House of Mouse pulling its Willow series from the streaming platform as part of a broader cost-cutting initiative under Disney CEO Bob Iger.
“I meet lovely people on a daily basis who are fans of #Willow, who are the reason the @DisneyPlus series was made,” Davis wrote on X (formally known as Twitter). “Please tell me @WaltDisneyCo, what do I say to these subscribers when they ask why they can’t watch the series any more? #embarrassing”

Willow star Warwick Davis is not happy about the removal of the Disney+ fantasy-adventure series from the streaming platform, calling it “#embarrassing”.
“I meet lovely people on a daily basis who are fans of #Willow, who are the reason the @DisneyPlus series was made,” Davis wrote on X (fka Twitter). “Please tell me @WaltDisneyCo, what do I say to these subscribers when they ask why they can’t watch the series any more? #embarrassing”
The streamer announced in March that there would be no second season of the original series, based on the 1988 fantasy film directed by Ron Howard. However, series creator Jon Kasdan later categorized Willow‘s status as more of a pause than cancellation, noting that Season 2 has been written and he is hopeful that it will eventually be made, but not for at least the next 12 months, leading to a decision to release the cast.

"Bottoms" is a lot of things: a raunchy, bloody comedy; a lesbian love story; and a showcase of Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri's comedic talents, to name a few. But it's also full of subtle details and references, and one that's easy to miss is that the movie is (probably) set in the early 2000s.
One of the biggest details that roots the movie in time is the characters' use of flip phones and portable CD players. Communication also seems fairly analogue, and there's no social media to speak of (though one can only imagine how unhinged Sennott's character Pj's social media presence would be). The aesthetics of the film also feel borrowed from classic early 2000s high school comedies like "Mean Girls," complete with quirky teachers, cheerleaders, classic bullies, and razor-sharp jokes about social hierarchies.
Yet, in many ways, "Bottoms" is also divorced from time - existing in...

You’ll want to catch Emma Seligman’s “Bottoms” while it’s in theaters. Buzz surrounding the Orion Pictures film has spread as quickly as the gossip about its two main characters did at Rockbridge Falls High School.
You’ll probably recognize at least one of the famous faces in the ensemble cast, whether it be “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri, “Red White & Royal Blue” star Nicholas Galitzine or “Shiva Baby” breakout Rachel Sennott. Sennott and Seligman previously worked together on “Shiva Baby,” and the pair co-wrote the screenplay for “Bottoms.”
The film released in limited theaters Aug. 25 in Los Angeles, New York, Austin and San Francisco. The Alamo Drafthouse cinemas, arthouses and AMC screens showed the film its opening weekend. The combination of limited screens and lack of streaming makes for tricky navigation of how to watch “Bottoms,” but we’ve got you covered in the meantime before it eventually lands somewhere to stream.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “Bottoms,” a dark comedy parody of the high school caste system, featuring jocks, cheerleaders, freaks and geeks, directed and co-wrttien by Emma Seligman (“Shiva Baby”). In theaters since August 25th.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The story focuses on best pals Pj and Josie (Ayo Edebiri of “The Bear”). They like girls, and they especially like the girls on their high school cheerleading squad. Looking for an opportunity to break into that impenetrable clique, they start a fight club as an extracurricular activity. As the group begins to come together, the cheerleader Isabel (Havana Rose Liu) begins a crush on Josie, and the club find themselves battling the school’s alpha quarterback, Jeff (Nicholas Galitzine). There seems to be a transition happening in this high school.
”‘Bottoms” in theaters since August 25th. Featuring Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri, Ruby Cruz, Nicholas Galitzine, Havana Rose Liu and Marshawn Lynch.

Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby drew from the well of modern cringe comedies to tell its story of a pressure cooker of a shiva. That setting lent the film authenticity, keeping it firmly grounded in a recognizable reality. So it’s all the more surprising that Seligman’s follow-up, Bottoms, is a far more silly, over-the-top affair, but the film’s unique blend of deadpan and absurdist humor, and its tendency to occasionally push the boundaries of good taste, shows that Seligman is equally comfortable working at the opposite end of the comic spectrum.
Following queer high school besties P.J. (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri) as they start a fight club in an attempt to impress two cheerleaders, Isabel (Havana Rose Liu) and Brittany (Kaia Gerber), Bottoms immediately announces itself as a warped reimagining of the high school comedy rather than a straightforward satire of one. A women’s self-defense club in a heightened toxic heterosexual high school? Welcome to “Bottoms.”
Rachel Sennott co-wrote the high school comedy with “Shiva Baby” director Emma Seligman. Sennott plays queer teen Pj opposite “The Bear” breakout Ayo Edebiri, who portrays Pj’s childhood bestie Josie. The duo lust after their respective crushes, Isabel (Havana Rose Liu) and Brittany (Kaia Gerber), while trying to navigate teendom in the shadow of quarterback Jeff (Nicholas Galitzine) and his cronie, teammate Tim (Miles Fowler).
Pj and Josie accidentally found a female fight club, co-run by misfit outcast Hazel (Ruby Cruz), with the hopes to befriend (and hook up) with cheerleaders under the guise of feminism. Marshawn Lynch, Dagmara Dominczyk, and Punkie Johnson also star in the highly anticipated, R-rated summer comedy.
Writer-director Seligman told Entertainment Weekly that she opted not to rewatch “Superbad” or “American Pie” because “I think we didn’t want to be influenced by them,...

Following their break-out hit Shiva Baby, Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott quickly amassed the resources for their follow-up, Bottoms. Also starring Ayo Edebiri, Ruby Cruz, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber, Nicholas Galitzine, and Marshawn Lynch, the Elizabeth Banks-produced comedy follows a pair of high school seniors who set up a fight club in order to hook up with cheerleaders. After a successful SXSW premiere a few months back, it’ll now get a theatrical release at the end of the summer and the first red band trailer has arrived.

Willow creator Jon Kasdan remains hopeful that we will see a second season of the fantasy series, following news that it is ending, at least for now. Kasdan took to social media Thursday to reassure fans that a Season 2 has been written and he has every hope that it will eventually air, but not for at least the next 12 months.
“A decision was made last week to release our main cast for other series opportunities that may arise for them in the coming year,” he wrote, taking issue with Deadline’s and other online reports of the series ending. He added that he feels “fairly confident that, if asked, neither I, nor the folks at Lucasfilm, would or have actually characterized it” as a final cancellation.

“Willow” creator Jon Kasdan has addressed reports from earlier this week that the fantasy series has been canceled after one season.
In a statement posted to Twitter Friday morning, Kasdan, in an attempt to clarify the “juicy” and “splashy” headlines he saw online, that Lucasfilm and the production team made a decision last week to “release our main cast for other series opportunities that may arise for them in the coming year.” He added that he feels “fairly confident that, if asked, neither I, nor the folks at Lucasfilm, would or have actually characterized” their predicament as a full-on, final cancellation.

Willow is not returning to Disney+ for a second season, per Deadline. The streaming service has cancelled the sequel series just two months after the first season ended.
The fantasy series picks up years after the original 1988 movie with a new adventure for Nelwyn sorcerer Willow, played once again by Warwick Davis. Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Amer Chadha-Patel, and Tony Revolori also starred in the series, which “introduced new characters and was set in a world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls and other mystical creatures flourish. An unlikely group of heroes set off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world.”

The magical fantasy series “Willow” couldn’t conjure up a second season. Deadline reports that Disney+ has canceled the continuation of the 1988 film after a single season.
“Willow” premiered in November 2022. While it was well-reviewed, it received little fanfare and got a surprisingly minor marketing push for a special effects-heavy fantasy show based on a popular franchise. Its low-key release was perhaps a sign of what was to come.
The series was produced by Lucasfilm and served as a sequel to Ron Howard’s beloved film, which starred Warwick Davis as the titular sorcerer and Val Kilmer as a mercenary named Madmartigan who joins Davis on his quest to protect a baby princess named Elora Danan from an evil queen. Davis returned for the series, in which Willow aids a group of young people on their quest to rescue a kidnapped prince. The series also starred Ellie Bamber as adult Elora Danan,...

Bad news for fans of the Willow series that finally debuted on Disney+ late last year after years in development. The show, which brought Warwick Davis' sorcerer back to screens 35 years after the original movie, has been cancelled by the streaming service.
According to Deadline, the show didn't meet the company's threshold in terms of buzz (viewership figures tend to be an arcane mystery at Disney+) and with the Mouse House looking to cut costs on streaming in search of profit, Willow appears to be a victim of that – it wasn't a cheap show to make and hasn't performed on the level of, say The Mandalorian.
Willow caught up with the title character years after the original movie and saw him drawn into a new quest to face a resurgent threat.
Alongside Davis, the show starred Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Amer Chadha-Patel and Tony Revolori.

Legacy sequels are big business right now, and the "Willow" Disney+ series seemed poised to potentially be a successful part of that trend. Unfortunately, the series has been canceled by the House of Mouse after only one season, according to Deadline. The show's eight-episode first season ended just about two months ago, but the streaming service has decided not to move forward with any more installments.
Based on the 1988 film of the same name from director Ron Howard, "Willow" followed up on the story of a sorcerer named Willow (Warwick Davis), who found himself charged with the task of taking down an evil tyrant. The series takes place many years after the events of the film and follows several new characters, along with some old familiar faces. However, it seems that there just wasn't enough there to grab audiences' attention.

It appears “Willow’s” magic has already run out again. The Disney+ fantasy series, a sequel to the 1988 Ron Howard film of the same name, will not return for a second season, IndieWire has confirmed.
The news comes two months after the show, which premiered on November 30, concluded its eight-episode run on Disney+ in January. Like the film, “Willow” was produced by Lucasfilm, which has been one of the main drivers of content for Disney’s core streaming service through shows based on the “Star Wars” franchise; others include “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Andor,” and the upcoming “Ahsoka,” “Skeleton Crew,” and “The Acolyte.”
Disney+ ended 2022 with 102.9 subscribers; another 61.3 million are in the ecosystem via Disney+ Hotstar.

The journey of Willow won’t continue on Disney+.
The streamer has canceled the Lucasfilm series, a sequel to the 1988 movie of the same title, after a single season. The news comes two months after the eight-episode season concluded its run.
Disney+ doesn’t provide viewing data for its programming, but Willow didn’t break into the Nielsen top 10 rankings of streaming titles during its run. The series earned mostly positive reviews from critics.
The cancellation comes during a transition period for both Lucasfilm, which is reconsidering the output of its signature Star Wars franchise, and Disney’s streaming operations. Like other companies, Disney is pulling back some on the lavish spending on streaming content; Willow’s cancellation at Disney+ follows the ends of Big Shot and The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers in February.

A new adventure began last year on Disney+ with the premiere of “Willow” in November, a TV series adaptation/expansion of Ron Howard‘s 1988 fantasy adventure film. Unfortunately, we’ve learned this afternoon that Disney+ has already cancelled “Willow.” In all likelihood, not enough people tuned into Season 1 to justify the spend for another season.
Deadline reports, “Willow, which picked up years after the events of the film, did not have the zeitgeist cultural impact of the original but was well received by critics, getting a 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. While the series won’t continue, Willow remains an important IP in the Lucasfilm library so it may be revisited in the future.”
Jonathan Kasdan and Wendy Mericle were the showrunners for “Willow.”
“The series introduced all-new characters to the enchanted realm of fairy queens and two-headed Eborsisk monsters, and welcomed back its hero, Willow Ufgood, played once again by Warwick Davis.

It’s beginning to feel like South By Southwest is the Rachel Sennott Festival. After breaking out there three years ago with Shiva Baby (the movie premiered as a short in 2018 and would have again as a feature in 2020 if not for the pandemic), she made waves last year in Austin with sleeper horror hit Bodies Bodies Bodies. Now Sennott’s back with Bottoms, one of two new movies she’s headlining this week, and which adopts many characteristics of an SXSW offering: it’s gay, it’s bloody, and it’s horny.
At least that’s how director Emma Seligman described her sophomore feature in front of a raucous opening-night audience. But even that barely encapsulates the absurdist reality that this early-2000s high school comedy establishes and then keeps deconstructing. After collaborating on their claustrophobic chamber drama Shiva Baby, Seligman has re-teamed and co-written a joke-heavy screenplay (boasting...

A term I hear a lot to describe slick, antic-driven movies with airy narratives is “fun.” (I’ve used it, too, about smooth-brain films I realize after a few days I didn’t really like but had to say something about.) We praise these films for serviceable visuals, steady direction and a handful of star performances. We forgive the plot holes and ignore the jarring tonal shifts. As these movies swerve from one farcical situation to another, we’re sometimes nagged by a creeping ambivalence. But we shrug it off once we remember the few times we laughed. “Fun” counts for something. Right?
Yes, but also no. Emma Seligman’s Bottoms is the most recent case in point. To me, real fun — ephemeral, subjective — often entails leaning into a lot of un-fun things: earnestness, character development and even restraint in service of a broader purpose. It’s work I don...

Bottoms brought the blood to its SXSW premiere.
Creative duo Emma Seligman and Rachel Sennott were on hand at the Paramount Theater two years after the premiere of their breakout feature Shiva Baby was set to premiere at the festival but was waylaid by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In this queer coming-of-age romance, which doubles as a farce and action film, Sennott and The Bear breakout Ayo Edebiri star as two “ugly, untalented gays” — as they are described repeatedly in the movie — who launch a high school fight club. It’s all under the false pretense of female empowerment in hopes the duo can sleep with their crushes.
During the post-screening Q&a, Seligman and Sennott talked about their intentions behind making the film, which they started scripting in 2017, as creating a queer high school comedy that they wished they saw while teens. “[Young] female comedy is like girls finding a vibrator in the couch and going,...

In “Bottoms,” a high-school comedy that is brazenly gonzo, scaldingly and at times even dementedly over-the-top, and actually about something, Pj (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri) have been best friends since the first grade, but in their senior year at Rock Ridge High they’re at the end of their tether. They’re losers, they’re lonely, they’re lesbians — and in their eyes, that puts them beneath the bottom of the food chain. So they do what anyone in their position might do. They decide to start a fight club!
It’s modeled (sort of) on the one in “Fight Club,” though the movie isn’t particularly interested in that film, where the characters staged bare-knuckle brawls out of a kind of self-serious macho romantic doomsday nihilism. In “Bottoms,” Pj and Josie, in the time-honored tradition of teen-movie protagonists out to lose their virginity, are just looking for...

I don't want to generalize the experiences of fellow sapphic women, but when I was realizing my attraction to women in high school, my already overactive imagination became even worse. My rotating cast of crushes became the damsels in distress in my daydreams, needing someone like me to save them from whatever crushing predicament they found themselves in. Of course, these daydreams were completely unreasonable and not grounded in reality in the least bit, but they helped me start coming into myself. I'm sure at least a handful of women-loving-women can relate.

Directed by Emma Seligman and written by Seligman and Rachel Sennott, Bottoms, is a coming of age story about two horny teenage girls kicking, punching, and slamming their way to getting laid. The film has a stacked cast including Sennott, Ayo Edebiri, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber, Ruby Cruz, and Miles Fowler. This comedic journey of its young protagonist is not without its issues, but it’s unapologetic in its execution and filled with memorable moments.
Bottoms opens with Pj (Senott) and Josie (Edebiri) having a conversation about girls and sex. As lesbian teens, they don’t have the gumption to approach their crushes. Makes sense as to why, their confidence is in the toilet because they are constantly bullied and called “ugly, untalented gays.” In an attempt to be more social, the friends go to the fairgrounds and spot Isabel (Havana Rose Liu) and Brittany (Kaia Gerber), the cheerleaders they aim to pursue.

South by Southwest on Wednesday revealed the second half of its lineup for this year’s edition, set for March 10-19.
This includes Visions, the Global section presented by Mubi, 24 Beats, and Festival Favorites plus numerous additions to the Headliners, TV Premieres, Narrative and Documentary Spotlight and other sections.
‘Swarm’
New on the sked is Janine Nabers and Donald Glover’s Amazon Studios series Swarm and Lee Sung Jin’s Beef, respectively the opening- and closing-night TV premieres. They join the previously announced opening-night world premiere of Paramount’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
This year’s closing-night film will be announced closer to the event. In addition, there is another movie to be announced for the fest’s Monday, March 13 slot. Given the Oscars on March 12 (note the festival sets their dates five years in advance), I understand that evening’s lineup will ease a bit with amped-up...

On the heels of the season finale of Lucasfilm’s all-new action-adventure series “Willow” based on George Lucas’ fantasy-adventure film, Disney+ has set a January 25, 2023 premiere date for the debut of its original documentary special, “Willow: Behind the Magic.” Featuring the series’ breakout stars and returning legends, the documentary takes viewers behind the scenes for an in-depth look at the making of the hit original series, which debuted on Disney+ November 30, 2022.
The story of “Willow” began when an aspiring sorcerer, played by Warwick Davis, is whisked away on a journey to protect an infant empress Elora Danan and vanquish the evil Queen Bavmorda from their world of Andowyne. Now, the story continues with Davis reprising his titular role as he leads an unlikely crew of heroes – which includes a now-grown Elora, who has just learned of her prodigious birthright – on a quest to protect Andowyne from an even larger foe than they had imagined possible.
