The Wolf Man remains one of the horror genre's most iconic movie monsters and in 2017, there were plans for him to take centre stage in Universal's ill-fated "Dark Universe."
The idea of an McU-inspired shared world featuring these creatures crumbled when The Mummy bombed, leaving the studio with no other choice than to part ways with Hollywood heavyweights like Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, and Javier Bardem.
There's been some chatter about Universal attempting to revive its Dark Universe, but filmmaker Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man won't be part of them.
"As an outsider, I would say that The Mummy's Dark Universe, in my humble opinion, felt like it was reactive to what was going on with all the superhero stuff - the MCU and DC universe," producer Ken Kao tells Screen Rant (via FearHQ.com). "And we know there's been a lot of talk about what...

Patricia Velásquez long ago made peace with the fact that she and Egypt will be eternally linked. It’s an amusing quirk of fate for the Venezuelan actor since she grew up not in the sun-soaked deserts of North Africa, but rather the lush greenery of Latin America and France. She is a woman of proud Indigenous Wayuu descent and of a multicultural childhood that took her all over the world. Just never that part of it. Nonetheless, because of a movie she did a quarter-century ago—because of The Mummy—when friends, family, and even strangers think of the Land of the Pharaohs, they think of Patricia Velásquez. They think of Anck-Su-Namun.
“Can you believe I still have not been to Egypt?” Velásquez muses when we catch up with her over Zoom ahead of The Mummy’s 25th anniversary. “But somehow I seem to be connected to it a lot.

1999 was an amazing year for movies. But, among all the classics like The Matrix, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, Go, Three Kings, and so many more, one that often gets overlooked is The Mummy. Originally, the summer of ’99 was supposed to be all about Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but a few weeks before that movie opened, The Mummy turned out to be an unexpected smash for Universal Pictures, with it spawning two sequels, a spin-off movie, and (less cool), a reboot.
With the movie turning twenty-five, the film’s director Stephen Sommers, revisited the film during an extended sit-down with THR. For those who may not be aware of his career, Sommers made a whole slew of super-fun adventure movies in the 90s, including a really solid re-imagining of The Jungle Book for Disney and the creature feature Deep Rising. Tom Cruise is known for his action-hero persona in Hollywood. The actor has played many roles which has allowed him to flex his acting muscles as well as enabled him to perform death-defying stunts. He has headlined major franchises such as Mission: Impossible, and Top Gun, and has featured in one-off action blockbusters such as Knight and Day.
Cruise was also part of the disastrous The Mummy reboot in 2017, which was a box office failure and officially shut down the Dark Universe before it even began. However, before he came on board the ill-fated franchise, he was rumored to be in the running for the original films starring Brendan Fraser along with Brad Pitt as well. Director Stephen Sommer, however, debunked the rumors.

Following a limited theatrical release, director Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review Here) was released through the Netflix streaming service back in December, then Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver (read our review of that one Here) reached the service last month… but we’ve known from early on that these PG-13 versions of the movies wouldn’t be the only versions we’d see. Snyder has also put together extended director’s cut of both films, which will each have around an hour of additional footage. They’re expected to be released through Netflix sometime this summer, possibly in August, and the director’s cut of Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire just got its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. It earned an R for brutal bloody violence and gore, sexual content, graphic nudity and language.

Following a limited theatrical release, director Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review Here) was released through the Netflix streaming service back in December. Viewers will get the chance to find out what happens in the second half of the story when Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver reaches the service this Friday – and while doing press for that film, Snyder confirmed that a Rebel Moon 3 is already in the works. But he doesn’t intend to wrap this franchise up as a trilogy. In the end, he thinks there could be a total of 4 to 6 Rebel Moon movies!
Speaking with Radio Times, “We absolutely have the story (for Rebel Moon 3) all set, we did all that work. We wrote a treatment for the movie so we’ll see how we go ahead. … I guess (a total of) 4 makes sense. 4 or 6 movies,...

Yesterday, we shared some quotes from director Zack Snyder and co-writer Kurt Johnstad where they gave some information on what will be seen in the extended cut of Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review of the PG-13 cut Here), which will be released through the Netflix streaming service sometime after Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver reaches the service on April 19th. Speaking of Rebel Moon: Part Two, Johnstad also told The Hollywood Reporter what can be expected from that film: “a nonstop action rollercoaster ride of twists and turns.”
When asked how the second half of the story compares to the first, the co-writer answered, “I would say that it’s definitely its own movie, and it’s a very different movie. It’s not an assembly of the team. The team is built, and now it’s why they fight. I think [the PG-13 cut] is two hours,...

With a love of cinema woven into its DNA, The Monster Squad helped indoctrinate ’80s kids to the classic monsters. The generation that grew up watching it on home video and HBO look back on the 1987 film with the same reverence director Fred Dekker had for the Universal monster movies, and now they’re passing it down in a similar fashion. There’s no better way to introduce the next generation than with the new 4K edition.
Conceived as “The Little Rascals meets the Universal Monsters,” the cleverly-plotted film clocks in at a tight 82 minutes. The punchy script by Dekker and Shane Black doesn’t have an ounce of fat on it, save for the casual homophobia, misogyny, and body shaming of the time. Drawing inspiration from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, human characters offer well-placed levity and a bevy of memorable one-liners, but the monsters are played straight.

Prince Harry reflected on all sorts of memories about his late mother, Princess Diana, in his 2023 Spare memoir. Between researching the car crash in which she died to their last phone conversation, the Duke of Sussex remembered what it was like meeting his mother’s new “friend,” Dodi Fayed, in 1997. Ahead, what Harry remembered about meeting Fayed.

Any so-called visionary director that's been in the business as long as Zack Snyder has experienced their share of criticism and cultural backlash over the years. After the surprise hit of "300," the highly stylized sword-and-sandal epic based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, Snyder delivered an R-rated, mostly faithful adaptation of Alan Moore's "Watchmen" that solidified him as a top tier action filmmaker. "Man of Steel" of course led to the birth of the Snyderverse and the highly divisive "Batman v. Superman" that ushered in a darker version of the Caped Crusader and a murderous Dark Knight that proved controversial. After satiating his hardcore fans with a four-hour cut of "Justice League," Snyder sidestepped the internet vitriol of Marvel and DC fans to make the bombastic zombie heist film "Army of the Dead" over at Netflix.

Renfield was always a risk for Universal Pictures: a high-concept reimagining of the Dracula mythology via horror-comedy. But in more ways than one, it’s come up a disappointment for the studio after an opening weekend which saw the Nicolas Cage-starring vehicle debut in fourth place during its first three days—behind not only Universal’s own The Super Mario Bros. Movie (which dropped a mere 40.6 percent) but also the much cheaper horror movie, The Pope’s Exorcist. While Renfield walked away with $7.7 million in its debut, Russell Crowe as an exorcist compelled moviegoers to hand over $9.1 million this past weekend.
There are several ironies to this, with the first being Universal put Renfield out one weekend after the biggest release of its fiscal quarter, presumably because the studio gambled there would be little overlap in audiences between the family-friendly Mario brand and what is definitely a hard, blood-splattered R in Renfield.

The '80s was a pretty great time to be an undead bloodsucker. Writers and directors were clearly enjoying themselves playing with the old tropes; Tony Scott's "The Hunger" dispensed with fangs altogether and toyed with the idea of vampire immortality before turning into softcore erotica; Nicolas Cage lost the plot and munched live cockroaches in "Vampire's Kiss;" Kathryn Bigelow brought a Western theme to her mean and moody "Near Dark;" and "Lifeforce" even gave us vampires from outer space. To top it all off, Count Dracula teamed up with other classic Universal monsters like the Wolf Man and the Mummy in "The Monster Squad." These movies left behind the spooky castles and misty graveyards of Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee's iconic iterations of Bram Stoker's most famous creation, bringing the vampire myth right into the modern world.

It was recently announced that the first installment in this two-film epic will be released on December 22nd – and during a recent interview with Variety, a Netflix executive discussed having the confidence to let Snyder dive into making Rebel Moon: Part 2 long before anyone has a chance to see the first movie.

Released in 2017 in the wake of the Brendan Fraser movies, the Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy was intended to kick-start Universal’s “Dark Universe,” but we all know how that worked out. The film’s under-performance at the box office spelled the swift end of the planned universe, and we haven’t heard a peep about any Mummy-related projects since.

Taylor, now 48, still has total recall of the moment he first saw masked killer Michael Myers: “I can’t tell you one thing about the Buck Rogers movie, but I can remember everything about that trailer,” he says over Zoom, looking relaxed in a surprisingly brightly lit kitchen.

Tad the Explorer – aka Tad Stones the Chicago bricklayer – is onto his third adventure in new Enrique Gato feature, Tad the Lost Explorer and the Curse of the Mummy (or Tad the Lost Explorer and the Emerald Tablet in some regions) and is as accident-prone as ever as he tries to gain acceptance into the upper echelons of archaeological circles.
Indeed, we first see Tad (voiced by Trevor White) making a major discovery on a dig in Mexico led by the University of Chicago’s archaeological department which (naturally) all ends in disaster. Expelled from the site and leaving ever patient girlfriend Sara (Alex Kelly) behind, a crestfallen Tad returns home to decomposing old friend Mummy (Joseph Balderrama) who is as addicted to gadgets and social media as any youth is today (parents/guardians unite in rolling their collective eyes to the cinema ceiling in weary recognition here). However, in the chaos that follows,...

When you think of Halloween, what do you think of? Perhaps you think of candy, pumpkins, black cats, and scarecrows. You wouldn't be alone, as these elements of classic holiday iconography have been used and celebrated for decades, even after they weren't necessarily considered scary anymore. They have become intrinsically associated with spooky season to the point where you can't look at a pumpkin anymore without thinking of it with a carved face.
For the 31st iteration of Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Orlando Resort has taken these symbols and elevated them for modern sensibilities. Pumpkins have been given demented sentience, witches now make their famous brew from human blood, and scarecrows come to life to stalk the living.
However, that's only a taste of what the event this year has to offer. /Film was invited to Universal Orlando for an exclusive opening night experience, and while not without its issues,...

Vanessa and Elwood Preview the “Horrors of Blumhouse” at Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood! [Images]
It’s almost the most wonderful time of the year… Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights!
Opening night is upon us and Bloody Disgusting’s Vanessa Decker & Elwood Quincy Walker got an early sneak preview of two of this year’s most anticipated houses: The Horrors of Blumhouse & Universal Monsters: Legends Collide…
In this year’s edition of The Horrors of Blumhouse guests are welcomed into Blumhouse Video, an abandoned haunted VHS rental store presenting the body-swapping slashterpiece Freaky & the terrifying summer blockbuster The Black Phone.
The Freaky section of the house is fantastic & throws you right in the middle of the film’s opening scene where the Blissfield Butcher brutally slaughters a group of teens one by one.
This house does a great job at recreating a lot of Freaky’s creatively gruesome kills, featuring the iconic shattering wine bottle throat kill & the skull-crushing toilet seat from what is one...

As soon as it was announced that Zack Snyder would be directing a sci-fi epic called Rebel Moon for the Netflix streaming service, Snyder made it clear that they were hoping this would be a franchise-starter. He told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted Rebel Moon to be “a massive IP and a universe that can be built out”… and even though the first Rebel Moon only started filming a few months ago, Netflix has already secured California tax credits for a sequel. Which they’re currently calling Rebel Moon: Part 2.
The California Film Commission announced their latest round of credit allocations this morning, and Variety reports that Netflix was given 37.1 million worth of tax credits – which is 40 of the total that were given out. 16.6 million of that will be going toward the production of Rebel Moon: Part 2. The first Rebel Moon also benefited from California tax credits last year...

If you haven’t already, please take a moment to examine the image above. It’s a collage photo of three different moments at three different studios that were each chasing a “shared cinematic universe.” On the left, we have the most infamous failure-to-launch story out of the Hollywood of the 2010s: Tom Cruise stands between Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem. Between them were the intended stars of new “Universal Monsters” movies (aka superhero movies in disguise). They were meant to be the Frankenstein Monster, the (new) Mummy, and the Invisible Man of the Dark Universe.
On the right of the collage, we have a different scene from 20th Century Fox’s San Diego Comic-Con panel circa 2015. In retrospect, Fox’s expectations appeared overly optimistic when they had Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Lawrence, and Miles Teller, among others, stand shoulder to shoulder for a selfie with Stan Lee,...
