While most in Western culture would associate the idea more in line with a horoscope, the concept of foretelling a person's fortune or future is more related to the concept of Primbon in Javanese society. Although the idea is similar, this section of Indonesia presents the idea as more of a book with details regarding people's fates, whether that be their dates aligning themselves into a blessing or a curse, partners being right for each other in marriage, and other such trivialities. Veteran Indonesian genre director Rudy Soedjarwo crafts this idea to mixed results with his latest film, aptly titled “Primbon,” now streaming on Netflix.

Primbon is a gripping 2023 film that delves into the lives of a superstitious family who are tightly bound by the beliefs of the Primbon book. The story revolves around a girl named Rana, who mysteriously disappears in the woods on her mother’s supposedly cursed birthday. Everyone assumes she’s dead and ends up conducting a funeral ceremony called the Tahlilan ritual for her peace. To everyone’s shock, Rana returned that very night. However, doubts linger about whether she is truly alive or whether something more sinister has transpired. As the family grapples with the unsettling idea that their daughter might be possessed by a bad spirit, viewers are drawn into the mystery of Rana’s disappearance and the enigmatic nature of her return. The film challenges the reliability of the Primbon book by questioning whether everything written within its pages speaks the truth. As the narrative unfolds, the...

The film begins in the 50's actually, when a photographer is “invited” by a friend into a truly hellish setting, where a number of bodies have been exhumed and used for some sort of satanic ritual, with the friend asking the photographer to do everything in his power to let people know about what is happening. Back in the 80s, several years after they managed to save themselves from the terrible events that resulted in the death of their mother and the youngest sibling, Ian, the family are now living in a block of flats. Exclusive: ColorCreative, the management and production company founded by Issa Rae and Deniese Davis, has signed first-generation Liberian-Nigerian filmmaker Tari Wariebi for representation.
The signing follows the world premiere of Wariebi’s short We Were Meant To at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it received a standing ovation and was nominated for the Short Film Grand Jury Prize. Pic follows Akil, an African American teen, who boasts wings and one goal: to take his first flight.
Wariebi has announced that with ColorCreative’s support, he’ll now look to adapt the short into a feature following a Black man as he defies his fears, insecurities and societal barriers, while discovering his perfect launch into manhood, in a world where Black men have wings and their first flight is a rite of passage.

Indonesian genre kingpin Joko Anwar continues his run of hits with “Satan’s Slaves 2: Communion,” a juicy if slightly overstuffed sequel to his 2017 supernatural horror hit “Satan’s Slaves.” Set in a brutalist concrete apartment block that looks like hell on Earth even before ghouls and zombies start terrorizing the first film’s surviving family members, “Communion” serves up suspense, scares and gallows humor with considerable style. This handsomely mounted widescreen chiller is sure to lure plenty of eyeballs to streaming platform Shudder when unleashed in territories including North America and the U.K. on November 4.
Having enjoyed commercial and critical success for most of the nine features he’s directed since debuting with the delightful romantic comedy “Joni’s Promise” in 2005, Anwar’s stock has never been higher. “Communion” attracted 6.3 million local theatrical admissions in August, making it the third-highest-grossing Indonesian film of all time. “Satan’s Slaves...

Satan’s Slaves: Communion, or Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion if you prefer, is the newest film from Indonesian writer/director Joko Anwar, It’s no secret I’m a fan of his work and with it being three years since his last film, Impetigore, I was quite ready to see his sequel to the film that brought him international attention, Satan’s Slaves.
The film opens in 1955 with Budiman, the journalist from the first film, being brought to a local observatory where several corpses are arranged as if they were at prayer. There are lots of footprints leading from the cemetery to the building, and the corpses all have muddy feet. The government wants to cover it up but one local official asks him to get the word out.
