Jean Smart is reflecting on her late husband’s death.
In a sit-down interview on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? on Max, Smart recalled the shock of Richard Gilliland’s dying March 2021 due to a heart condition.
Smart described the ordeal as “the worst.” She continued, “Because it was such a shock. It was so unexpected. And, you know, I thought he had Covid or something. The places I took him to, to get him tested didn’t do anything except a Covid test.”
After Gilliland passed away, Smart said she “went back to one of those places” and asked to see whoever was in charge that day. “I said, ‘Let me ask you something.’ I said ‘If I brought my 71-year-old husband in here, who was complaining of pain when you take deep breaths —,’ and I said, ‘What would you do for him?’ He said, ‘Well, first thing we do is an Ekg.

We may have had to wait two years for the third season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” to hit our screens but, boy, was it worth it. Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

There's a turn a phrase that one should "turn their trauma into purpose."
Someone who has succeeded at that is Elizabeth Smart.
She's not only overcome her experience as an abduction survivor, but she's become a staunch advocate for those like her, and one of many methods is through helping others tell their stories.
And that's where we are with her partnership with Lifetime as she continues to produce some Ripped from the Headlines stories about women and the traumas they've overcome.
The next film on her agenda, executive produced by Smart, is The Girl Locked Upstairs: The Tanya Kach Story, one of many new upcoming Lifetime movies.
TV Fanatic was fortunate to get the full trailer for the film, and it's as harrowing and disturbing as you can imagine.

Break out Tom Cruise’s famous coconut cake, the wait is finally over. “Hacks,” TV’s funniest comedy about comedy, is back after a lengthy hiatus. The third season picks up a year after the events of Season 2, which saw Deborah (Emmy winner Jean Smart) fire her writing partner, Ava (Emmy nominee Hannah Einbinder), following the successful release of her comedy special so Ava could finally begin developing her own career.
The new season, the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Max, is as sharp and funny as ever as the two friends find their way back to one another when Deborah decides to have another go at hosting a late-night show. The enviable list of guest stars for the nine-episode season includes J. Smith-Cameron, Helen Hunt, Christina Hendricks and Christopher Lloyd. But it’s the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder — easily one of TV’s best...

Jean Smart is ready for the red carpet.
The Emmy and Golden Globe winner is dressed in a midnight-blue gown with gold accents. Her blonde hair is styled and piled as high as the gods. Her makeup? Flawless.
“I’m nervous,” I tell her.
“You have nothing to be nervous about,” she replies, placing her hands on my shoulders. “You’ve interviewed me dozens of times.”
True, but this time is different. I am about to interview Smart while I’m pretending to be Marc Malkin and she’s pretending to be Deborah Vance.
Spoiler alert: I make a cameo as myself in the Season 3 premiere of “Hacks.”
“Do you want to run lines?” Smart asks me.
“Sure,” I say, before reciting my fake interview question.
Smart delivers Vance’s response perfectly. A couple of seconds later, I’m directed to a faux red carpet built to look like the Time100 Gala,...

When “Hacks” costume designer Kathleen Felix-Hager read the script for the Season 3 premiere, a pivotal costume was just described as “the ugly dress.” And Felix-Hager delivered.
The premise is simple: a top-of-her-game Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) needs a speccatular dress for an event. After she rejects everything the stylists suggest, she takes them on a field trip to her storage warehouse — which looks like a CostCo for couture from the last 50 years. There, she finds something exactly right. But in the world of “Hacks,” that required something totally wrong.
“It had to be something that was hideous,” Felix-Hager told IndieWire. “And it was believable that Deborah, at some point in her life, could have been convinced that it was a beautiful dress.”
And yes, Deborah spoke the truth when she proudly proclaimed it was a Bill Blass dress from the ’80s. And like every good designer shopper, Felix-Hager found it...

“Hacks” is, and has always been, a relationship comedy. The HBO Max series from Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky takes an exhaustively progressive Gen Z comedy writer and pairs her with a legendary stand-up comic whose worldview has become as stale as her jokes. The first season harvested humor from their prickly interactions, as both Ava (Hannah Einbinder) and Deborah (Jean Smart) felt each other out while finding a working rhythm. In Season 2, they took their show on the road, driving their fragile yet fruitful new connection toward a creative explosion or a close-quarters’ flare-out.
Ava and Deborah’s relationship is strictly platonic — Deborah’s running jokes about Ava’s “huge” hands negate any romantic assumptions, which the show itself has also acknowledged as a sneaky running joke of its own — but they’re not without romance. “Hacks” fits the comfortable mold of a romantic-comedy. Its Hollywood...

“Hacks” is back — and better than ever! Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the Max comedy’s triumphant return and Emmy hopes.
After missing eligibility last year, “Hacks” dropped the first two episodes of its nine-episode third season on Thursday. While the show has also skipped a year in the narrative with a one-year time jump, it has not skipped a beat in quality. The jokes are still hilarious, the season-long storyline clicks, and Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are on fire. But will Emmy voters embrace the show again?

When Season Three of Hacks begins, legendary comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) is at an improbable professional apex. Now in her 70s, she has become more popular and revered than ever, thanks to the acclaimed, deeply personal comedy special she and her writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) put together in the Max comedy’s second season. Where once, Deborah had to worry about being yesterday’s news, now she is in constant demand, her every appearance an event.

At the end of its second season, “Hacks” seemed to have written itself into a corner. On the heels of a hit special, veteran stand-up Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) fired Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), the young writer whose perspective helped push Deborah out of a yearslong creative rut. While harsh, the move was uncharacteristically selfless on Deborah’s part, cutting Ava and her valuable advice loose in an act of tough love. But even as forcing Ava to step out of her shadow showed Deborah’s growth, it also broke up the professional partnership that helped define the Max comedy and propel “Hacks” to acclaim.
This cliffhanger was further prolonged by Smart’s heart surgery and, of course, two concurrent Hollywood strikes. Yet, miraculously, Season 3 — which premieres May 2 — shows little signs of sweat. If any strain came with following through on such a tectonic shift, or getting back in gear...

“Hacks” is back on Max for Season 3 on May 2, and the streaming service released a new trailer for the Emmy-winning comedy on Tuesday.
In Season 3, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) reunites with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) after Deborah fired her at the end of Season 2 so Ava could pursue her own dreams. Now, after months apart, they’re both at different places in their careers – with the success of her special, Deborah is back on top, while Ava has enough self-respect to demand that Deborah not make fun of her appearance (yeah right) – and they’re going to try to take advantage of their momentum. “Anything I want to do, I have to do them now,” Deborah tells Ava. She has to strike while the curling iron is hot.

‘Hacks’ stars and producers prep for show’s overdue Season 3 return by defending why women are funny
At last, our long national nightmare is nearly over.
It only seems like the much-decorated Max comedy “Hacks” has been away forever. It’s actually been less than two years. Overcoming strikes by writers and actors and a health crisis involving star Jean Smart – who won the Emmy for Best Comedy Actress in each of the show’s first pair of seasons – the series returns for Season 3 on May 2. The streamer will roll out two episodes on May 2, 9, 16 and 23 before running the finale of the nine-episode season on May 30.
“Hacks” was something of an Emmy juggernaut in 2021 and 2022 before going Awol due to a 10-month production delay in 2023. It earned 15 nominations in its first season and 17 in its second. It converted six of those 32 nominations (which included a pair of Best Comedy series bids) to wins, including the two for Smart as well as for the show’s writing and directing.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the top-heavy Best Comedy Actress category.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about comedy — and not the comedy of seeing Tom Ripley try to dodge a runaway motorboat. I’m typing about real comedy… like “The Bear.” Well, Ok, maybe not just “The Bear” since that’s all but assured of winning multiple Emmy Awards in September in a rerun of the 2023 (’24) Emmys we just saw in January. But let’s start there because while we agree with the consensus that the series, Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach should all repeat as Emmy winners this year, we’re both against the current tide in the Best Comedy Actress race. Exclusive: Jean Smart (Hacks) is developing a limited series about the relationship between a grandmother and her grandson in the final months of her life, which the Emmy winner will star in and executive produce.
Inspired by Kevin Hershey’s New York Times article “Love Letter: When My Grandmother Stopped Eating“, the project hails from Smart and her producing partner, Angeliki Giannakopoulos, and their SmartAngel Entertainment. Dennis Erdman and Clark Peterson acquired Hershey’s life rights and will executive produce the potential series along with Smart and Giannakopoulos.
The poignant — and funny — story centers around a grandmother, played by Smart, at the end of her life and her 20-something gay grandson who reluctantly becomes her caretaker. He moves into her Catholic senior living facility, where she lives alongside a mix of traditional and hippie nuns.
The team is currently out to writers to pen the script.

A year ago, we heard that filming had wrapped on the documentary Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story, which – as you may have guessed from the title – chronicles the life and career of iconic actor Robert Englund. A few months ago, we learned that Cinedigm has packed up the North American distribution rights to the documentary, and the expectation was that they would be releasing it sometime around Englund’s birthday on June 6th. As it turns out, that is the exact date they’re going to be releasing it. Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story will be getting a digital release and will also be available to watch on the Bloody Disgusting streaming service Screambox on June 6th. Now that we know the release date, a trailer for the documentary has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
