Few directors in the reality competition space are as lauded as Joseph H. Guidry. The filmmaker has received three consecutive nominations from the Directors Guild Awards, including one this year for his work on the HBO Max series “The Big Brunch.” (Guidry won a DGA Award in 2020 for HBO Max’s “Full Bloom.”)
“HBO Max is a premium streamer,” Guidry tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Directors panel. “The Big Brunch” – which Emmy Award winner Dan Levy created – is a series, Guidry says, that fits right in with the platform’s aesthetic.

Disgruntled angels are coming to Hulu. The streamer has ordered Standing By, a satirical look into the lives of a group of eternally bound, irritated guardian angels and the lessons they’ll eventually learn from not only the dysfunctional humans they’re in charge of protecting but also one another.
The animated series is from 20th TV Animation and creators Dan Levy and Ally Pankiw. Danielle Uhlarik will serve as showrunner and executive producer. “Standing By is about the hilarity, embarrassment and melodrama of everyday life as observed by a team of judgmental, gossip-starved guardian angels,” said Levy and Pankiw in a joint statement. “We are very excited to bring this world to life with the help of Hulu, 20th Television Animation, and Bento Box Entertainment. Not to mention an insanely brilliant cast of actors.”

In October 2020, months into the pandemic’s decimation of the restaurant industry, Dan Levy got the idea for “The Big Brunch,” the uplifting HBO Max cooking competition that revolves around his favorite meal of the day. Levy was in bed at the time, and sprung up to “write it down from start to finish.” The next day, he called his managers to tell them about it, and when they asked Levy what exactly the show would be, he presented it to them in “great detail.”
As we sat together on a seafoam green banquette, facing the open kitchen in which the chefs cook on the show’s bistro-inspired set — designed by David Korins, of “Hamilton” fame — it was clear that those details are very important to “The Big Brunch.”
As is the show’s heart, with which fans of Levy’s “Schitt’s Creek” are by now well-acquainted. Levy has friends who are chefs,...

A cooking competition that tasks chefs with making brunch — the No. 1 most dreaded meal in most professional kitchens — at first sounds like a recipe for Sisyphean pain. In the hands of “Schitt’s Creek” co-creator Dan Levy, however, “The Big Brunch” immediately establishes itself as the total opposite of that bleak picture, with its emphasis on congeniality and warmth above all else. Leaning on the latter-day “Schitt’s” ideals of staying true to oneself, this gentle twist on a “Top Chef” formula doesn’t exactly bring the drama — but for those craving something with less bite, “The Big Brunch” should prove harder to resist than that one last mimosa.
The eight-episode series (premiering Nov. 10 on HBO Max) opens with Levy introducing 10 contestants who are “each making a big difference in their community,” though only one will win the final (and impressively large) prize of 300,000. Here, “The Big Brunch” establishes altruism as its ultimate goal.

HBO Max dropped the trailer for “The Big Brunch,” the new cooking competition series from creator Dan Levy, who also serves as host and judge. The series, which airs its first three episodes on Nov. 10, highlights 10 undiscovered community-oriented chefs from all over the country competing for a 300,000 cash prize.
Chef Sohla El-Waylly and restaurateur Will Guidara host alongside the “Schitt’s Creek” Emmy winner.
Unlike more cutthroat cooking competition series, “The Big Brunch” is all about celebrating the connection fostered by food and the sharing of each chef’s personal journey. At the top of the trailer, one of the chefs says, “As a chef, you wear three hats: you’re a mentor, you’re a coach and then you’re a chef.”
Levy then introduces the concept of the show: Brunch as “the ultimate connector, the perfect convergence of food, comfort and friendship.” The contestants who exemplify this concept are...

Dan Levy’s upcoming HBO Max cooking competition “The Big Brunch” has found its judging panel: Joining Levy at the judges’ table will be chef Sohla El-Waylly and restaurateur Will Guidara. The unscripted series — created and hosted by Levy, and produced by Boardwalk Pictures — will premiere on the streamer later this year.
In the announcement, Levy and fellow executive producers Andrew Fried and Sarina Roma of Boardwalk Pictures said: “We owed it to our competing chefs to find judges who could help them in really meaningful ways — both in the kitchen and beyond, and Sohla and Will do just that. They each have such distinctly unique culinary voices that combined, speak not only to flavor and technique, but also business and hospitality. We couldn’t be more excited that Sohla and Will have joined us, as their expertise and insight are an invaluable asset to our incredibly inspiring group of undiscovered chefs.
