- He graduated from Oberlin with a bachelor's degree, and received a doctorate in music from Cornell University.
- He was a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer who was best known for his symphonies and concertos, but also wrote chamber and vocal works and taught for more than two decades at the Eastman School of Music. In 1993, he won the Pulitzer in music for his Trombone Concerto.
