India has banned “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Universal Pictures had submitted a version of the film shorn of nudity and with sex scenes edited to India’s Central Board of Film Certification (Cbfc).
Though the Cbfc did not specify the reasons for denial of certification, it is understood that board members objected to some language in the film. Universal has the right to appeal the decision.
The film has previously been banned in Malaysia, Indonesia, Kenya, the North Caucasus region of Russia, the U.A.E., Cambodia and Papua New Guinea. It enjoyed a brief release in Nigeria before the censor board decided to ban it. Censored versions have been released in the Philippines and Zimbabwe.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” has grossed some $487 million worldwide.
Malaysia also – belatedly – last week banned the books.
