On Wednesday morning, President Biden signed into law a national security bill that would force TikTok to be sold by its owner ByteDance, or face a possible ban in the United States.
Minutes later, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew responded with a video posted to the platform, declaring that “rest assured, we aren’t going anywhere.”
“Make no mistake, this is a ban, a ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice,” Chew said. “Politicians may say otherwise. But don’t get confused.”
The legislation signed by Biden gives ByteDance nine months to sell TikTok, with a possible three-month extension if a sale is in progress. It would also keep ByteDance from controlling TikTok’s algorithm, which is credited with helping the app rocket inn popularity.

Ben Stiller has said in the past that “Zoolander 2” flopping at the box office was “not a great experience,” but he now admitted on an upcoming episode of David Duchovny’s “Fail Better” podcast (via People) that he was blindsided by the disastrous results that met his 2016 sequel. After all, the original “Zoolander” became one of his most beloved and quoted movies in the years after its 2001 theatrical release.
“I thought everybody wanted this,” Stiller said of the “Zoolander” sequel. “And then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really fucked this up. Everybody didn’t go to it. And it’s gotten these horrible reviews.'”
“It really freaked me out because I was like, ‘I didn’t know was that bad?'” Stiller continued. “What scared me the most on that one was l’m losing what I think what’s funny, the questioning yourself … on ‘Zoolander 2,...

Who would pass up $30 billion? Hollywood’s top decision makers and gatekeepers, apparently.
Beginning in 2021, the consulting firm McKinsey has published a series of reports exploring the entertainment industry’s representation and inclusion of historically excluded people. Along the way, the analysts totaled up the potential financial revenue that Hollywood could stand to gain if it adopted more culturally inclusive business solutions: $10 billion per year from closing the Black inequity gap, an eye-popping $12 billion to $18 billion from properly valuing Latino professionals and consumers, and — in the latest report released today — $2 billion to $4.4 billion from more effectively tapping the Asian and Pacific Islander market.
The latter figure is calculated based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data that Asian Americans earn on average 30 percent more than non-Asian Americans but spend 35 percent less on media. Meanwhile, McKinsey’s own survey of Api consumers found that nearly half would spend more money...

On a visit to Anaheim in April, a crowd of parkgoers wearing Loki horns and Ratatouille chef hats cheered as a robotic Spider-Man swung through the air and slid upside down to the ground at Disney California Adventure’s Avengers Campus. Across the way, at Disneyland, the wait times for the sleek battle ride Rise of the Resistance at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge stretched to 90 minutes. Undeterred, fans in Jedi costumes clustered to wait beneath the looming cliffs of the fabricated Star Wars planet.

U.K. media regulator Ofcom published “strengthened” industry guidance and issued a warning to broadcasters on Wednesday after recently finding that news network Gb News, which is often described as the British equivalent of the Fox News Channel, had breached regulations around politicians moonlighting as TV news presenters.
“Following a series of decisions about programs presented by politicians found in breach of Rules 5.1 and 5.3 of (the Ofcom Broadcasting Code) – a number of important learnings for broadcasters have been hardwired into strengthened industry guidance,” it said.
Rule 5.1 says that “news, in whatever form, must be reported with due accuracy and presented with due impartiality.” Rule 5.3 states: “5.3: No politician may be used as a newsreader, interviewer or reporter in any news programs unless, exceptionally, it is editorially justified. In that case, the political allegiance of that person must be made clear to the audience.”

Ryan Gosling is reflecting on the reason he believes the 2016 action-comedy The Nice Guys didn’t score a sequel.
The Barbie actor told ComicBook.com, in an interview published online Tuesday, that there likely won’t be a follow-up because the original movie was overwhelmed by The Angry Birds Movie at the box office during its debut weekend.
“So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds,” Gosling explained. “So Angry Birds just, just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel.” The Angry Birds Movie 2 premiered in 2019.
And The Fall Guy star was right, as the Shane Black-directed film had a tough battle during its opening weekend. It was not only up against Angry Birds but also Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Additionally, Captain America: Civil War was in its third weekend in theaters, so Marvel fans also played a factor.

Any photographer who shoots what’s happening in the gleaming, raw, people-packed carnival of New York City — the stores and walls and towers and alleyways, the celebrities, the endless cross-section of humanity — already has an artistic leg up. But the other leg is what he or she does with it. Weegee shot the violent night world of sin and crime. Diane Arbus captured the hidden freak show and showed us its humanity. Alfred Eisenstaedt and William Klein caught the hurly-burly of the everyday. But as you watch “Uncropped,” an addictive look at the life and work of the magazine and newspaper photographer James Hamilton, you may think: He’s the greatest New York photographer of them all.
Hamilton’s black-and-white images — in the documentary, we see hundreds of them — have a burnished tactility, and a psychology so effortless that every one of them tells a story. The photographs are gallery beautiful,...

Employers have been banned from adopting or enforcing clauses restricting workers’ ability to move to competitors, marking a pivotal change to the employment landscape that could improve working conditions in Hollywood.
The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday voted 3-to-2 to ban noncompetes, which typically prevent workers from taking a new job from a rival or starting a new business in the same field for a certain amount of time after they leave a company. On top of possibly raising pay for workers across the board by allowing them to freely solicit offers from competitors, the move could also complicate hiring in an industry rife with firms concerned about protecting confidential information and trade secrets.
“The new FTC rule shines a klieg light on how best to retain quality employees in the industry — noncompetes are on their way out, so companies need a better solution,” says Anthony Oncidi, co-head of Proskauer’s labor and employment department.

DreamWorks Animation’s September event movie The Wild Robot is tweaking its release pans. The family film will now open in theaters on Sept. 27, 2024, instead of a week earlier on Sept. 20.
The move gives Wild Robot some distance from Paramount’s animated Transformers One, which moved to the Sept. 20 date earlier this week.
The DreamWorks Animation film, from director Chris Sanders and starring the voice of Lupita Nyong’o, follows the journey of a robot named Rozzum unit 7134 — “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings. She gradually, however, forms friendships with the animals on the island and cares for an orphaned baby goose.
The Wild Robot is based on Peter Brown’s book of the same name, an illustrated middle-grade novel first published in 2016 that became a literary phenomenon and rocketed to No. 1 on The New York Times bestseller list.

Lisa Vanderpump hopes to never see Bravo boss Andy Cohen step down. The reality star spoke about her “close relationship” with him and said there’s “no way” the allegations against him are true.
Vanderpump appeared on The Talk on Tuesday, where she was asked by co-host Natalie Morales where she stood in regard to allegations against Cohen. The Watch What Happens Live host was recently accused of engaging in drug use with several Housewives stars and faces multiple lawsuits alleging workplace harassment.
“I’ve had a very close relationship with Andy over the years,” Vanderpump said. “Andy and I have always had a very playful relationship. I think I’ve been one of the few people that have done Watch What Happens Live on their own for many years, and had a kind of very connected relationship, and he’s playful. He’s appropriately naughty, like I am, too.

Jerry Bruckheimer has nothing but praise for Bruce Willis when looking back at filming the 1998 blockbuster Armageddon, which Bruckheimer produced.
The legendary producer told People magazine, in an interview published Tuesday, that the Die Hard star was extremely kind to everyone working on the film set, especially the crew members.
“Bruce is such a good guy,” he said. “He was so generous to the crew.”
Bruckheimer specifically remembered Willis, who he called a “giving guy,” always contributing to cash giveaways for the crew at the end of each week.
“They’d have drawings, and he’d throw a lot of money in the hat, and the crew members would always take away some nice extra cash at the end of the week, whoever won,” the Top Gun: Maverick producer added.

Ryan Gosling is opening up about how Eva Mendes and their two daughters serve as a north star for him in his life.
In a Men’s Health cover story with The Fall Guy director David Leitch, the Barbie actor and Bullet Train filmmaker were asked if they have a motto they live by or a north star that guides their decisions.
Gosling explained that he doesn’t really have a motto, but will find himself thinking about his deathbed when faced with a decision, saying that considering what will matter then is what helps him choose the best thing for him.
“It puts things into perspective,” the three-time Oscar nominee told the publication. “It always comes back to family first. I don’t think I’ll regret anything professionally, but I do think when it comes to Eva and the girls, they come first.”
He continued, “I don’t know,...
