Marvel’s favorite frenemies are back in the second trailer for the hotly anticipated “Deadpool and Wolverine” — the third installment in the “Deadpool” series of films and the first set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This time, Deadpool and Wolverine fight like bloody hell to the tune of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.”
“I’m about to lose everything that I’ve ever cared about,” Deadpool tells Wolverine in the trailer, to which Wolverine responds, “Not my fucking problem.”
“Is that what you said when your world went to shit?” Deadpool retorts, provoking Wolverine to strike his crotch with those claws before Deadpool shoots him several times in the torso.
Cut to the two heroes chumming it up over lunch: “Wanna talk about what’s haunting you, or should we wait for a third act flashback?”
The threequel stars Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and brings back Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, whom...

Claymation legends Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham will offer stop-motion fans a sneak peek at their upcoming Wallace & Gromit film at this year’s Annecy animation festival.
The still-untitled feature will see inveterate, cheese-loving inventor Wallace designing a “smart gnome” for the family garden who begins to develop a mind of its own. As events spiral out of control, it is up to faithful dog Gromit to put things right. Park and Crossingham co-directed the film, based on a story by Park and a screenplay from Shaun the Sheep and Gnomeo & Juliet writer Mark Burton.
The film, which will premiere on Netflix worldwide outside the U.K., where it will have a first-release window on the BBC, is the second feature from Aardman Animations based on the beloved characters, following the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) and the series of award-winning shorts, including Oscar-winners The Wrong...

A24’s dystopian thriller “Civil War” conquered the box office again, fending off three new releases to retain the top spot on North American charts.
Alex Garland’s film, starring Kirsten Dunst as a photojournalist who traverses a violently divided United States, added $11.12 million in its second weekend of release. It has generated $44.8 million so far and already stands as one of A24’s top five highest-grossing movies of all time. With a $50 million price tag, it’s also the indie distributor’s most expensive film to date.
Though it was a close race, “Civil War” charged ahead of a trio of newcomers — Universal’s vampire horror film “Abigail,” director Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and Sony and Crunchyroll’s anime adventure “Spy x Family Code: White” — which all opened to mixed results.
Heading into the weekend, “Abigail” was predicted to top the box office with $12 million to $15 million in its debut.

Conjoined twins Lori and George Schappell, subjects of several notable documentaries who pursued separate careers, interests and relationships during lives that defied medical expectations, died this month in Pennsylvania, according to funeral home officials. They were 62.
The twins, listed by Guinness World Records as the oldest living conjoined twins, died April 7 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to obituaries posted by Leibensperger Funeral Homes of Hamburg. The cause of death was not detailed.
“When we were born, the doctors didn’t think we’d make 30, but we proved them wrong,” Lori said in an interview when they turned 50, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. George came out as transgender in 2007.
The twins, born Sept. 18, 1961, in West Reading, Pennsylvania, had distinct brains but were joined at the skull. George, who had spina bifida and was 4 inches shorter, was wheeled around by Lori on an adaptive wheeled stool. Despite each having...

J.A. Bayona’s Netflix epic Society of the Snow swept Saturday night’s Platino Awards, picking up a total of six trophies including the top award of the night for best Ibero-American fiction film.
Bayona’s film follows the tragic events that take place after Uruguayan Air Force flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972. Only 16 of the 45 passengers ultimately made it out alive as a handful of others perished on the mountain during the 72 days from the time of the crash until rescuers arrived.
Bayona also made his way to the stage to accept a trophy for best director, and his film’s haul also included best male performance for star Enzo Vogrincic, best editing for Jaume Marti and Andres Gil, best cinematography for Pedro Luque, and best sound for Oriol Tarragó, Marc Orts and Jorge Adrados.

Jerry Seinfeld quipped this week that “the movie business is over” because of a sense of confusion among show business workers.
“Disorientation replaced the movie business,” Seinfeld told GQ. “Everyone I know in show business, every day, is going, ‘What’s going on? How do you do this? What are we supposed to do now?'”
Seinfeld was speaking to the outlet in connection with his film Unfrosted, which releases on Netflix next month. The project marks Seinfeld’s directorial film debut.
“It was totally new to me,” he said of the experience. “I thought I had done some cool stuff, but it was nothing like the way these people work. They’re so dead serious! They don’t have any idea that the movie business is over. They have no idea.”
Elaborating on his point, the comedian added he “did not” tell his coworkers that film is over. “But...

“A Knight’s Tale” director Brian Helgeland revealed in a career retrospective interview with Inverse that his efforts to make a sequel to his 2001 medieval action-comedy classic were apparently thwarted by the Netflix algorithm.
“When we finished ‘A Knight’s Tale,’ we were already thinking about making the sequel as a pirate film,” Helgeland said. “The plot revolved around Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) kidnapping Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon) and taking her to Constantinople. They end up as galley slaves after their boat is captured by pirates. There’s a prisoner on the boat who has a treasure map tattooed on his back, but he keeps getting flogged for indiscipline. The guys volunteer to take turns getting flogged in this prisoner’s place, so the map isn’t erased. Sony didn’t want to do it.”

Anne Hathaway opened up this week about her experience “back in the 2000s” being asked to kiss “ten guys” for a chemistry read.
“I was told, ‘We have ten guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’ And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ because I wasn’t excited,” Hathaway told V Magazine. She didn’t specify what project the audition was for.
“I thought it sounded gross,” she continued. “And I was so young and terribly aware how easy it was to lose everything by being labeled ‘difficult,’ so I just pretended I was excited and got on with it.”
Hathaway said this practice was “considered normal” during the early aughts. “It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me,” she said. “It was just a very different time and now we know better.

From a certain point of view, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star Eiza González may have just played the original real-life Bond girl.
Ungentlemanly Warfare, the first of González’s three Guy Ritchie movies to hit theaters, is loosely based on the recently declassified Operation Postmaster, chronicling Winston Churchill’s Special Operations Executive (Soe) and their covert mission to neutralize Nazi Germany’s U-boats during World War II. The efforts of these unauthorized commandos and spies helped change the course of the war, allowing the United States to then join the European Theater of Operations in 1942.
In the action-thriller, González plays Marjorie Stewart, a talented soldier-spy who’s equally gifted as a performer. Together with Babs Olusanmokun’s Heron, Stewart set up shop at the Nazi-frequented island of Fernando Po where they communicated the Nazi’s latest comings and goings to their fellow Soe personnel, including a group of commandos...

Legendary Hollywood screenwriter David Mamet is no fan of the entertainment industry’s efforts to drive greater diversity, equity and inclusion (Dei) in its ranks.
“Dei is garbage,” Mamet told the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on Sunday during a session with Matt Brennan. Mamet, who was on hand to talk about his memoir Everywhere an Oink Oink: An Embittered, Dyspeptic, and Accurate Report of Forty Years in Hollywood, added the industry’s Dei efforts amounted to “fascist totalitarianism,” according to an account in the Times.
The playwright and director, who has worked in Hollywood since the 1980s and is known for his trademark rapid-fire script dialogue, did not shy away from criticism during an informal conversation at USC’s Newman Recital Hall.
“There’s no room for individual initiative,” Mamet said of a film industry having experienced “growth, maturity, decay and death,” especially in the wake of the recent Hollywood writers strike.

The much-discussed special episode of Bluey is also the most watched episode of the show on Disney+.
The April 14 installment of the beloved preschool series, “The Sign,” racked up 10.4 million views worldwide on Disney+ in the week after its release, the streamer says. (The view count is the total viewing time divided by running time.) That’s the biggest tune-in for any Bluey episode — or that of any other Disney Junior show — on Disney+.
With a running time of 28 minutes (about three times a typical episode’s length), the 10.4 million views for “The Sign” translates to about 291.2 million minutes of viewing across the globe. In just the United States, Bluey’s full, 150-episode library draws an average of 1.19 billion minutes of viewing per week, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings — slightly under 8 million minutes per episode.

Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty reunited this week to recall a falling out that the two of them had while working on Beverly Hills, 90210 — but neither of them could remember the cause.
Doherty hosted Spelling on her Let’s Be Clear podcast, sharing toward the beginning that the two friends were “trying to figure out” what led to friction between them during their time on the hit series.
“It’s like one minute, we were friends, and then one minute we weren’t,” said Doherty, who played Brenda Walsh on 90210. Spelling, who played Donna Martin (and whose father, Aaron Spelling, produced the show) added that she was often easily swayed.
Doherty agreed. “It was very frustrating for me because I always used to tell you like, ‘Yeah, Tor, have an opinion,’” Doherty recalled. “Like, you’re smart, you’re funny, you’re talented. I loved you and I...

Jerry Seinfeld is finally a movie director with the upcoming premiere of his feature debut “Unfrosted.” Backed by Netflix, the star-studded comedy is a fictional account of the creation of Pop-Tarts toaster pastries. In a new interview with GQ magazine, Seinfeld reflected on his experience jumping into moviemaking for the first time so late in his career.
“It was totally new to me. I thought I had done some cool stuff, but it was nothing like the way these people work,” Seinfeld said. “They’re so dead serious! They don’t have any idea that the movie business is over. They have no idea.”
Asked to elaborate on a more serious note, Seinfeld continued: “Film doesn’t occupy the pinnacle in the social, cultural hierarchy that it did for most of our lives. When a movie came out, if it was good, we all went to see it. We all discussed it.

Anne Hathaway said in a new interview with V Magazine ahead of the release of her upcoming movie “The Idea of You” that chemistry tests have come a long way since her auditioning days in the 2000s. While the Oscar winner did not cite any movies by name, she did reveal that she was once required to kiss a handful of men in order for the team behind the film to find her the perfect co-star.
“Back in the 2000s — and this did happen to me — it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry, which is actually the worst way to do it,” Hathaway said. “I was told, ‘We have 10 guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’ And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ because I wasn’t excited.

Just a day before their second performance at Coachella, K-Pop group Ateez gathered at the Grammy Museum for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The eight-piece outfit and its fellow Kq Entertainment boy group xikers are the subject of a pop-up exhibit that opened to the public on April 10.
The exhibit spotlights costumes and props worn and used by the group (consisting of members Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung and Jongho) from their most recent album, The World EP.Fin: Will. The album, which all members wrote for, earned the global stars their first Billboard 200 No. 1 in December.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony wasn’t the group’s first outing to the museum. In February of 2022, shortly after their pair of sold-out shows at the Kia Forum, Ateez took part in the museum’s Global Spin Live series, participating in a conversation and performance for a select number of fans.

Céline Dion said this week she is hoping to “find a miracle” in regard to her battle with Stiff Person Syndrome, which she first announced in 2022.
“I haven’t beat the disease, as it’s still within me and always will be,” Dion told Vogue France. “I hope that we’ll find a miracle, a way to cure it with scientific research, but for now I have to learn to live with it.”
Stiff Person Syndrome is an “autoimmune disorder of the nervous system,” per the Mayo Clinic, “often resulting in progressive, severe muscle stiffness and spasms of the lower extremities and back.” There is no cure for the condition.
Dion said she undergoes “athletic, physical and vocal therapy” five days a week to counteract the effects of her disease. “I work on my toes, my knees, my calves, my fingers, my singing, my voice… I have to learn to...

This week’s Feinberg Forecast includes 11 categories that were not a part of last week’s, including those covering writing (drama, comedy, limited or anthology series, variety series, variety special and nonfiction program), reality programs (structured, unstructured and competition), game shows and animated programs. It is also the first edition to include Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, which has exploded since its April 11 debut, has officially been entered for Emmys consideration as a limited series and will seriously contend in several categories.
Over the past week, L.A.-area members of the TV Academy have been surrounded by — and, in many cases, invited to — high-profile FYC or FYC-adjacent events. PaleyFest’s lineup of panels included The Morning Show (with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon), Loki (Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson), Curb Your Enthusiasm (Larry David), The Late Show With Stephen Colbert (Stephen Colbert) and Late Night With...

During a recent PaleyFest LA event celebrating “Family Guy’s” 25th anniversary (via People magazine), Warburton revealed that his parents hate the Seth MacFarlane-created animated comedy and their disdain for the show went so far that Warburton’s mom once tried to get “Family Guy” canceled.
“They hate the show even more today than they did 25 years ago,” Warburton said. “My father was in a monastery for three months.

Palm Royale with its meticulously matched period décor and costuming is a true immersion in late 1960s Palm Beach culture. But while watching the Apple TV+ series, one can’t help but see the connections between the topics that were emerging as national concerns then and the biggest social issues now.

As the film awards industrial complex reemerges from a brief hibernation following the 96th Oscars and begins thinking about the 97th, which will take place on March 2, 2025, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ board of governors has announced updated awards rules and campaign promotional regulations — as well as changes to some of the special honors that are presented at the organization’s annual Governors Awards ceremony and its annual Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony.
Here is a brief overview of what’s changing…
The Academy is taking on a more prominent role in the fight to save movie theaters
Per usual, films will have to be released during the 2024 calendar year to be eligible — but the means by which they must be released will change slightly from recent years. As the pandemic continues to subside, drive-in theaters will no longer be a means of qualification for Oscars eligibility.

The Academy’s Board of Governors has approved the new awards rules and campaign regulations for the 97th Oscars ceremony to be held on March 2.
Significant changes have been made in the original score category. Now, up to three composers can receive individual Oscar statuettes if they all significantly contribute to a film’s music. This marks a departure from previous rules that required composers to submit as a group, such as the band Son Lux for the nomination for the best picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, winners for the animated film “Soul” (2020), also received a single statuette. The definition of a group has been specified to include a recognized band. Additionally, the shortlist in this category has been expanded from 15 to 20 titles, which will be announced in late December before the official nomination voting period begins in January.

Drew Barrymore revealed on a recent episode of her daytime talk show that she was told to dial her performance back during the making of the 1999 romantic comedy “Never Been Kissed.” Barrymore starred in the film as Josie, an insecure copy editor who has never had a real relationship. The movie was notable for Barrymore as it marked the first official title under her Flower Films production banner.
“At that time, people were very weary of actors being producers,” Barrymore said. “A lot of it wasn’t necessarily working, and it didn’t mean because you were an actor, you knew how to produce the film. And it was about the economics. So if you didn’t make the film work, and you produced it as an actor, you are likely to not be able to do it again.”

The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled new additions to the Official Selection for its upcoming 77th edition from May 14 to May 25.
Three new films have been added to the Competition lineup: Oscar-winning director Michel Hazanavicius’ animated feature The Most Precious of Cargoes, Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof’s Seed of the Sacred Fig and Emanuel Parvu’s Three Miles to the End of the World.
The Artist skyrocketed Hazanavicius to international fame in 2011 as the film won best picture at the Academy Awards, and received 10 Oscar nominations and five wins. Hazanavicius for his latest film adapted the Second World War novel of the same title by Jean-Claude Grumberg that is set against the events of the Holocaust and told with magical realism.

Cinema Guild has acquired North American distribution rights for “You Burn Me” (aka “Tú me abrasas”), directed by Argentina’s Matías Piñeiro.
The film had its world premiere at the Berlinale in February in the festival’s Encounters section. It won a special mention from the jury at Paris’s Cinéma du réel in March.
Cinema Guild will release the film in theaters following its currently unspecified North American festival premiere later this year. The company has also acquired rights to three earlies films by Piñeiro – “The Stolen Man” from 2007; “They All Lie” from 2009; and “Rosalinda” which will be released on home video and digital alongside “You Burn Me.”
An adaptation of “Sea Foam,” a chapter in Cesare Pavese’s Dialogues with Leucò, Piñeiro’s latest is an intimate and expansive meditation on death and desire. It is also a challenging exploration of the possibilities of adapting text to film.

Taylor Swift is breaking down the meaning of some of her new songs.
New on Amazon Music, Swift offers a track-by-track experience of some of the songs featured on her newly released album The Tortured Poets Department. Through the playlist experience, the singer revealed the inspiration behind songs “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone, “Florida!!!” with Florence + the Machine, “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?,” “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys” and “Clara Bow.”
After its release, Swift called the album “an anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time — one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.”
“This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up,” she continued. “There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted.

Diane Kruger is re-teaming with her In the Fade director Fatih Akin on the new German period drama Amrum, which began principal photography in Hamburg today.
The film follows a family living in a small village on Amrum Island in rural northern Germany in early 1945, in the final days of World War II. The story is based on the childhood memories of Akin’s In the Fade co-screenwriter, German author and director Hark Bohm. Bohm had initially planned to direct the film himself before handing the reins over to Akin, who co-wrote the Amrum screenplay.
The movie is a coming-of-age story of Nanning, a 12-year-old boy (played by Jasper Billerbeck) and his best friend Hermann (Kian Köppke). Laura Tonke (When Will It Be Again Like It Never Was Before) plays Nanning’s mother, Hille Hagener. Kruger plays Tessa Bendixen, a farmer’s wife. Matthias Schweighöfer (Oppenheimer), Detlev Buck (Same Same...

“Doctor Who” and “Sex Education” star Ncuti Gatwa said in a recent interview with Attitude magazine that Black people have a pressure to be excellent that is disproportionate to white people, be it in Hollywood or other professions. The 31-year-old actor has noticed “white mediocrity” being celebrated, which is a luxury that does not exist for Black people since they must be “absolutely flawless” to even get a sliver of attention.
“We’re trained to be like, ‘If I’m not exceptional, I won’t be loved.’ Certainly, I think that was my thing,” Gatwa said. “So, yeah, I think...

Last year, MakeMake Entertainment managing director Jennifer Sofio Hall and veteran impact producer Bedonna Smith helped launch MakeMake Residencies, a nine-month paid program for people from historically excluded backgrounds to build careers in post-production.
Now the two women are continuing that work with a new independent venture, Industry Standard, a talent accelerator for early- to mid-career professionals. “While there are a wealth of rewarding roles in post-production, the field collectively faces challenges regarding the visibility and accessibility of these careers,” Sofio Hall and Smith said in a joint statement. “Industry Standard exists to serve as a utility to match talent with opportunity and to bolster the momentum generated by these connections. By investing in the next generation of artists and producers and expanding pathways for engagement, everyone wins.”
Using MakeMake Residencies as a pilot, Industry Standard’s first program is Experience, again a nine-month paid program placing participants in specific fields.

Zendaya said in a recent interview on “Jake’s Takes” while promoting her new tennis drama “Challengers” that “it’s very odd” to always be asked about what it’s like kissing her male co-stars on screen. The actor has noticed in recent years that she gets asked in interviews about kissing scenes far more than her co-stars get asked.
“I feel like, when you do [kissing scenes], there is an abnormal amount of attention paid to it,” interviewer Jake Hamilton asked Zendaya, to which she replied: “I know, it’s very odd.”
“Do you feel like, as a society, people have forgotten that an actor kissing another actor is literally a part of your job? Or are they using it as an excuse to get you to talk about kissing?” Hamilton asked.
“I have no idea. I don’t know if it’s because they want it to be, like, a viral thing,...
