Film adaptations are great, but sometimes nothing can do justice to a novel quite like a full-blown TV series. It provides all the visual possibilities of a movie along with the added benefits of a long runtime and a chapter-style episodic structure.
Shows inspired by books can be found across a broad assortment of genres, from the memoir-based Orange Is the New Black to legal series like The Lincoln Lawyer, fantasy like The Witcher, and period romance like Bridgerton, just to name a few. And while audiences are watching around the world, these adaptations can also spark renewed interest in their source material, with books returning to bestseller lists years or sometimes even decades after they originally hit shelves.

Bridgerton‘s third season is upon us, but even as fans eagerly await the arrival of Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton’s (Luke Newton) love story, fans can’t help but wonder, which Bridgerton sibling will step up into the lead position for Netflix‘s previously ordered fourth season? When it comes to the order of things, fans of Julia Quinn’s books have had the Ton shaken up by Shondaland’s adaptation as Penelope and Colin’s story doesn’t unfold until the fourth book in the series lineup, following Benedict’s (Luke Thompson) romance with Sophie Beckett, a character who has yet-to-be introduced in the show. Liam Daniel/Netflix While it may seem like the logical thing for the TV series to return to order, picking up with Benedict’s love story in Season 4, it isn’t a foregone conclusion, especially without Season 3 to guide us as viewers.

The baffling phrase on the lips of every TV fan is suddenly “Baby Reindeer” — and for good reason. The Netflix limited series premiered on April 11 and quickly skyrocketed into the Top 10 in several countries, including the U.S. and U.K.
The series stars creator and writer Richard Gadd as an extension of his one-man Edinburgh Fringe show from 2016. In the TV version, Gadd plays a fictionalized version of himself named Donny Dunn, who is harassed by a female stalker for years while disentangling the ordeal from a sexual assault years prior. It evokes the transfixing storytelling and precision of “Fleabag” (another Fringe darling) and “I May Destroy You” (another complex piece processing sexual assault and subsequent self destruction). The title “Baby Reindeer” references a bizarre nickname he receives from stalker Martha (Jessica Gunning) — among many others.
So why is everyone talking about “Baby Reindeer?” On the surface, the series...

Baby Reindeer is another surprise runaway hit for Netflix, stunning audiences with its true story-inspired fictionalization of a man’s horrifying experience of stalking and abuse. Based on Richard Gadd‘s autobiographical one-man show, the British drama-thriller is written by and stars Gadd as Donny Dunn, a man who is stalked for ages by Martha Scott (Jessica Gunning) and sexually assaulted by Darrien O’Conner (played by Tom Goodman-Hill). In the wake of the jaw-dropping seven-episode miniseries, some audiences have wondered just how much of the story is based on Gadd’s real-life history — and who these unbelievable characters are based on from his real life. That last bit is taking things too far, however, according to Gadd himself. In an Instagram story, he encouraged viewers of the series to stop trying to figure out the identities of those who are fictionalized in the series, calling out one falsely accused associate by name.

Is the truth about what lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) is really doing working with the NYPD—ostensibly there as an outside observer, but really investigating Captain C.W. Wagner (Wendell Pierce) for possible corruption—about to come out? The April 25 episode of Elsbeth sounds like it will take at least one character one step closer. In “An Ear for an Ear,” after one of New York’s most sought-after plastic surgeons is found dead, Elsbeth has her eye on the victim’s former boss, Dr. Vanessa Holmes (Gina Gershon), who she believes has motives that are more than skin-deep. Also, Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson) keeps tabs on Elsbeth’s whereabouts as her investigation into Captain Wagner heats up. Right now, is Kaya more suspicious of Elsbeth or genuinely enjoying getting to know and work with her? “It changes scene to scene in this episode,” Patterson tells TV Insider.

Romano rated each episode on a scale of one to 100, but 96 was the highest score he gave. ““We were never perfect,” he told People. “I got on a little kick there. I hadn’t seen the episodes,” he explained. “They took on a new look to me. I was appreciating them more. I was very hard on them back then… But you see when you’re removed from it a little, I felt like an audience member. And then I said, ‘Let me rate them.’ I rated them,...

The Masked Singer panel is convinced there’s a legendary diva on the stage in Season 11, but are they right? The panelists—Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Rita Ora—put the clues together about Miss Cleocatra in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the April 24 episode. Following another performance and a clue, Miss Cleocatra reveals, “The Supremes aren’t just on my playlist. They’re a part of my career.” Ora suggests she’s “from the same era as the Supremes, the big divas.” She also points to a clue about Bette Midler. “She wrote a song for this lady, ‘Something Your Heart Has Been Telling Me,’ and I kind of feel like the voice is so familiar to me. I’m going to say Roberta Flack,” she says. Thicke is going a different route with the Supremes clue as well as looking at a gold wedding band clue.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Shōgun” Episode 10, “A Dream of a Dream,” including the ending.]
As a sweeping samurai epic, “Shōgun” understands it’s meant to end a certain way. Opposing parties draw swords, don their armor, and square off on the battlefield. Tensions teased over nine hours erupt in the roar of combat. That’s how grand conflicts regarding the future of great nations have been decided for centuries, and it’s only natural for a visual medium like film (or prestige television) to embrace war’s inherent spectacle. Soldiers charging down a hillside, canons firing across an open plain, horses galloping through fields filled with bodies either dead or clinging to life, as the grass under their feet quickly deteriorates into muddied, bloodied slop. These are the scenes we expect in an epic’s ending.
Because we’ve seen those images so many times — slain men strewn over blackened trenches — it’s easy...

Fans will be getting more of All American than previously expected, but exactly how much more? Well, that depends. The CW show is currently airing its sixth season, and the network has decided to add two more episodes to the season order, notching up to 15 episodes from the original 13 planned, per Deadline. The beloved sports drama is one of the few scripted series left on the struggling network, but the future of the show beyond Season 6 is currently in question (along with its spinoff All American: Homecoming as both shows are currently on the bubble). The trade reports that the extended length of this season is possibly meant to give more room to wrap up the storylines of exiting characters Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) and Jordan Baker (Michael Evans Behling), who are heading for the NFL draft in the events of the series. Former HGTV star Charles “Todd” Hill has been sentenced to four years in the Santa Clara County jail for committing real estate and financial fraud against multiple victims. Hill, 58, who appeared on the 2014 reality competition show Flip It to Win It, was also ordered to pay back nearly $10 million to the 11 victims of his fraudulent schemes. According to a press release from the Santa Clara County’s Office of the District Attorney, instead of buying dilapidated homes, fixing them up, and selling them for a profit, the HGTV alum spent millions on “over budget remodels, laundered profits, and pocketed millions in fraudulently obtained money.” Evidence revealed that Hill spent the laundered money on a rented apartment in San Francisco, as well as luxury items such as hotels, vacations, and cars. He was also found to have diverted construction money for his personal use. “Some see the huge amount of money...

When last we saw Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) in the Apple TV+ comedy series “Trying,” the couple was trying to pull off a reverse shotgun wedding — well, sort of. The long-term partners decided they finally wanted to get married, but rather than get hitched before people knew they were pregnant, they wanted to tie the knot before their kids were taken away from them. Luckily, Nikki and Jason won their court case against their adopted children’s biological grandmother, and with that out of the way, all their worries were over.
Ok, not quite. “Trying” takes a warts-and-all approach to parenthood (if not life in general), so there will always be concerns, big and small, for the family to deal with — the key is sticking together, no matter how trying things get. Season 4 brings a fresh set of family matters, as the story jumps six years into...
