Director: Michael Moore Stars: Michael Moore (Full Cast) Studio: Overture Films The Plot: Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore sets out to uncover the truth behind the current economic crisis with interviews from Wall Street and government insiders.
THE BUZZ: His teaser trailer had folks talking about this movie before it even had a title. And it didn't include a single clip from the film! So, has Mr. Moore found his Fahrenheit mojo again? Director: Ethan Coen Joel Coen Stars: Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind, Sari Lennick (Full Cast) Studio: Focus Features The Plot: A black comedy set in 1967 and centered on Larry Gopnik (Stuhlbarg), a Midwestern professor who watches his life unravel when his wife prepares to leave him because his inept brother (Kind) won't move out of the house.
THE BUZZ: The buzz on this project cooled when it was announced that the Coen Brothers will next direct a more-faithful-to-the-novel version of the John Wayne movie, True Grit. It's a funny time for the Coens; they win an Oscar, receive a certain level of critical dismissal for their follow-up (though Burn After Reading ranks as one of their top box-office successes to date), and then they cast unknowns, save fab character actor Richard Kind, in their latest. Sounds like a fun experiment for the filmmakers, a boon for the state of Minnesota, and tough job for the studio. We're primed to see the popular reaction to this one; it all feels uncharted and exciting. Oh, wait: Now that the fab trailer is out, do we detect a little bit of Jerry Lundegaard-esque misadventures here? Director: Ruben Fleischer Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: In a world overrun by zombies, a guy described as "the most frightened person on Earth" (Eisenberg) musters the courage to lead a band of refugees on a cross-country pilgrimage to an amusement park where they think they'll be safe.
THE BUZZ: Check it out: An original zombie story from a first-time director. No George Romero retreads or questionable comic-book universes here. Plus, Jesse Eisenberg continues his flirtation with actual-real mainstream success in a big year for the talented, young wallflower. It's been "announced" that Eisenberg has a brief encounter with newly minted Scream Queen Amber Heard before she goes undead on him. And if Sony wants a complete crossover hit, Eisenberg's fraidy-cat with hook up with co-stars Emma Stone and Mila Kunis, too. Director: Drew Barrymore Stars: Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore, Kristen Wiig (Full Cast) Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures The Plot: In Bodeen, Texas, indie-rock loving misfit Bliss Cavendar (Page) finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.
THE BUZZ: Does it sound weird to say this is the movie we're most looking forward to this fall? Here's why: Drew Barrymore has emerged as one of our favorite locas, and she's found her craft in front of the camera of late. And with 10 years worth of experience producing films alongside best pal Nancy Juvonen, we're totally behind her ascent to the director's chair. Austin-set movies typically rule, and Barrymore has assembled a dreamy cast (best press junket ever?) in her effort to mash-up the worlds of tough-girl skaters and mainstream-eccentric comedy. Also, she poached a few of Wes Anderson's behind-the-camera dudes, so any/all on-screen wipe-outs should have the right levels of flair. Message Boards: HElp!!!!!!!!!!! | UK Release? Director: Ricky Gervais Matthew Robinson Stars: Ricky Gervais (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: A comedy set in a world where no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain.
THE BUZZ: Boo hoo: Ricky Gervais may not ever appear on the U.S. version of "The Office," but wouldn't you rather he directed his own comedies with, ummmm, the best ensemble cast in recent history? The details are just starting to arrive on this one (here's a sort-of behind-the-scenes video), but I've purposefully avoided any indications of the story's finer points, opting instead to wait -- presumably -- for the first trailer to pop up this summer. And I feel safe with this project being in the arms of Warner Bros., especially since they've handled all of Christopher Guest's comedies, post-Guffman. (Note that Guest is a supporting player here, too.) P.S. You do know we have R.G.'s blog online, right? Message Boards: Louis CK??? | Taking a great idea and making it mediocre at best.. Director: Kristopher Belman Stars: LeBron James, Dru Joyce, Romeo Travis (Full Cast) Studio: Lionsgate The Plot: Go back in time and follow LeBron James and four of his teammates through the trials and tribulations of high school basketball in Ohio and James's journey to fame in the NBA.
THE BUZZ: Whether you know LeBron James as an NBA superstar or as the third man to ever appear on the cover of Vogue (ummm, I'm in the latter category), the buzz here is that Kristopher Belman's work is one of the most promising sports documentaries in some time. Since 1999, when Belman was a student at Loyola Marymount University, he began filming James and his teammates on the St. Vincent-St. Mary's High School's boys basketball team in Akron, Ohio. While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the others fail to realize that participation in the resort's therapy sessions is not optional.
THE BUZZ: Whether Retreat's mainstream-cool cast was handpicked by former swingers Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau or assembled by Universal's business-development execs, the crossover factor is off the PowerPoint charts here. Though the Industry has been riding the studio hard for its series of flops and underperformers (Public Enemies is the closet thing to a hit in a losing streak which includes Land of the Lost, Funny People, Brüno, and, most recently, The Invention of Lying), it would take a miscue of maximum incompetence for this date movie to tank. THE BUZZ: Behind the scenes here lurk a few dudes who have brought us some of the finest short-attention-span TV, so it's no wonder GH is -- I'm going to try and describe it without any puns -- crammed with quick testimonials from a range of familiar faces and sociopolitical without a heavy hand. I'm surprised it's being released in the fall, however, since it feels like this comedy-doc could have swapped places with The Cove. THE BUZZ: It felt like there were few features that pleased crowds at Sundance this year, though the latest from Lone Scherfig (Italian for Beginners) scooped up an audience award (which it totally deserves) and celebrated its pick-up by Sony Pictures Classics. What works here is no formula: it's screenwriter Nick Hornby's talent in drafting truly human experiences and emotions with an assured hand, Scherfig's marriage of high art and commercial viability, and her cast's ability to communicate feelings of hope, aspiration, and imperfection that make this film truly unique. THE BUZZ: Pusher trilogy director Nicolas Winding Refn apparently has found a balance between hyper-violence and art-house cool in his biography of British felon Michael Peterson. His efforts have kept Bronson's name buzzing in critical and Internet circles as we head into awards season. THE BUZZ: A smash in its native UK, St. Trinian's already has a sequel in production for an end-of-year release there. Definitely for the young-lady set, there's enough going on here for adults to appreciate -- especially for those of us who love seeing Rupert Everett in drags and asking, "Don't you think I make a remarkable queen?" Director: Nelson McCormick Stars: Penn Badgley, Dylan Walsh, Sela Ward (Full Cast) Studio: Screen Gems The Plot: Michael Harding (Badgley) returns from military school to find his mother (Ward) living with her new boyfriend, David (Walsh). As the two men get to know each other, Michael becomes suspicious of the man in his mother's life: Is he really the man of her dreams, or could David be hiding a dark side?
THE BUZZ: It's not that I am complaining about this remake, sight unseen; it's just ... I feel like it could be retooled for maximum entertainment value. My suggestions: swap out Dylan Walsh for Christopher Meloni as the titular character; undo the gender switch and put Amber Heard front and center; let Penn Badgley wonder quietly in the background why his girlfriend keeps breaking up with him as her life falls apart. (And maybe the producers could have obtained Badgley at a time when he didn't need to wax his chest for "Gossip Girl?") Fold in a Terry O'Quinn cameo (done!) and I'm there opening weekend. Pictures The Plot: Young, mischievous Max is sent to bed without his supper, but when his bedroom turns in to a magical jungle landscape filled with strange creatures, he embarks on a wild imaginary adventure.
THE BUZZ: We've been waiting for the wild rumpus to start on this one since forever ... well, technically, since the fall of 2008. And by now the story of Warner Bros. worrying whether children would stream out of theaters in tears at Spike Jonze's vision of Maurice Sendak's ten-sentence classic is new Hollywood folklore. We still wonder, however, if this is more a film for young people or their parents who came of age in the 1960s/70s. (Cue Arcade Fire and then: "Daddy, why are you crying?") This article is more than a year old, but it encapsulates the saga and includes footage of an early version of the film directed by a now-well-known animator. And from inside his jail cell, the mastermind lures the prosecutor (Foxx) who orchestrated the unjust deal into his deadly plan.
THE BUZZ: Working chronologically backwards, notions of Jigsaw, Hannibal Lecter, and Charles Bronson's Paul Kersey come to mind for what shaping up to be one of the year's most guilty pleasures; "to not crave it is to not crave cheesesteaks," as one descriptive insider put it. Director: Scott Sanders Stars: Michael Jai White, Arsenio Hall, Tommy Davidson (Full Cast) Studio: Apparition The Plot: A hero by the name of Black Dynamite (White) sets out on a mission to avenge the murder of his brother and to right the wrongs in his neighborhood.
THE BUZZ: A perfect antidote to the season's awards-chasers, Black Dynamite is more of a well rendered modern blaxploitation film than a tribute to the genre. It's easy to be grumpy toward something so self-conscious that it fakes its own bloopers, but it's better on the soul to laugh through it all, and to admire the level of dedication on the part of the filmmakers and actors. And look at Michael Jai White, spinning two decades worth of typecasting into a heroic effort; in a parallel universe, Spawn never happened and White is one of the new Marvel superheroes. However, when the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw's grand scheme is finally understood.
THE BUZZ: There seems to be a good amount of renewed interest in the serial since Lionsgate accidentally (?) spread a rumor of Cary Elwes's return to the fold. And yes, reports indicate he and his one foot will look to exact a gruesome revenge. (Either that, or he'll become the newest apprentice?) Reilly, Salma Hayek (Full Cast) Studio: Universal Pictures The Plot: A traveling freak show's most mysterious attraction recruits teenager Darren Shan as his assistant, though the young man soon finds himself used as a pawn in a battle between vampires and their deadlier counterparts.
THE BUZZ: The idea of vampires, werewolves, and a bearded Selma Hayek sounds like a publicity cakewalk to me, but there has to be more than one reason this long-completed adaptation of the novel by Darren Shan (the first in a series of twelve) took a while to earn a release date, finally settling on an appropriate Halloween release after a potentially (un)dead-on-arrival January berth. If the costs were kept low here and the marketing is smart and effective, Universal might have a cult franchise on its hands. Sorta like Hellboy without the attendant hype factor. THE BUZZ: This should be called The Aviatrix. That kills me. If I remember correctly, this was the first project Hilary Swank revved up after her divorce was finalized, and it's the type of vehicle which should steer her to a third Best Actress Oscar nomination, even if the film itself doesn't have much momentum. Unable to fulfill the grieving man's expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the father who had rejected him.
THE BUZZ: I really like the look of this film, and the notion that its creators are looking to please fans of Osamu Tezuka's comic series and young kids alike. Rumors of financial troubles proved true, and I appreciated the level of honesty from Summit Entertainment, which confirmed production company Imagi's money woes as they shipped out images (seen above) verifying that everything was back on track. Director: Tony Jaa Panna Rittikrai Stars: Tony Jaa (Full Cast) Studio: Magnet Releasing The Plot: Equipped with a unique set of skills, an orphan who has been raised by a band of thieves sets out to exact his revenge on the warlord who murdered his family.
THE BUZZ: Tony Jaa had a wild ride here. You might be familiar with the story. Crumbling under the pressure as director/star, Jaa disappeared during production, returning two months later to finish the shoot under the guide of Panna Rittikrai, who directed Jaa in The Bodyguard and Born to Fight. (In a very un-Hollywood move, Jaa said he went to meditate on the project, which is the advice we'd given to every single trouble-making young star in Los Angeles. And now we want Jaa to make an action movie with David Lynch.) But from what we hear, Rittikrai didn't have much to direct, since the flick has been described as 80% action, 10% exposition, and 10% that very same exposition all over again. We're still trying to figure out if the recut version overseen by Luc Besson is the one being released in theaters, and if the theatrical version will differ from the VOD/XBOX Live/etc. cut that will premiere before said theatrical release ... THE BUZZ: If you are unfamiliar with the critical disputes being waged over Lars von Trier's latest, here's a shortcut: the movie received a special anti-award from the ecumenical jury at Cannes. The jury, which typically awards a film that promotes spiritual and humanist values, decided to award this film an anti-award for its misogynistic views. When a cinematic controversy to this extent is presented, I turn to the voice of reason: Roger Ebert. His review is here. THE BUZZ: I will always remember Motherhood as the first movie I ever walked out of while attending a film festival. According to a few reviews I've read, the impetuses which caused me to grab my bag and split -- the shrill tone and classist pseudo-comedy -- rarely let up. This movie, along with others such as the recent Post Grad, should remind filmmakers of all stripes that audiences really do not need to see the harshness of our daily minutiae play out as broad comedy. THE BUZZ: Something tells me this indie comedy from Bartelby director Jonathan Parker is relatable for those of us who have socialized (or slept) with artists, but I don't necessarily want to revisit those experiences -- do you? Also, something about the snide tone here (check the trailer) reminds me of Whit Stillman's Metropolitan and Barcelona, though unlike those films, I don't feel any affection toward this work. Director: Kenny Ortega Stars: Michael Jackson (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: A compilation of interviews, rehearsals and backstage footage of Michael Jackson as he prepared for his series of sold-out shows in London.
THE BUZZ: For the millions of MJ fans who bought tickets to his sold-out series of 50 comeback concerts before he died last June, this is definitely not it. But, it's the best the promoters could do to recover some of its losses and offer grieving fans a glimpse of what might have been. Sony and the Jackson family have apparently pulled out all the stops to make sure this lives up to the Gloved One's glittery standards -- featuring rare rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage (shot in HD!), state-of-the-art digital sound and 3-D sequences intended for use in the live concerts -- building up to what will most likely be a spectacular celebration of the late entertainer's talents, but also a bittersweet reminder of them as well. Director: Jared Hess Stars: Michael Angarano, Jemaine Clement, Mike White (Full Cast) Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures The Plot: Soon after his latest work is published, science-fiction author Ronald Chevalier (Clement) faces charges of plagiarism from aspiring teenage writer Benjamin Purvis (Angarano). THE BUZZ: Jared Hess heads back to Utah for his third film with his co-writer spouse, Jerusha. My initial thoughts after watching the trailer for the first time: I think it would have been funny to set this story at the same time and place as Napoleon Dynamite? Why not -- some of the exterior shots look exactly the same. Also, I wonder what the expectation is for Jemaine Clement to bring in his "Flight of the Conchords" audience, because I'm unsure if star Michael Angarano (a LaBeouf-alike, in my opinion) has anything resembling Jon Heder's charm. Could be a second clunker for the normally savvy Fox Searchlight, who currently are working on getting/keeping audiences interested in Amelia. THE BUZZ: Troy Duffy's curious relationship with the entertainment industry continues to fascinate movie fans and insiders alike, especially now that upstart distributor Apparition has formed a pact with Sony to release the long awaited film. Really, who doesn't want to see this film succeed? One can imagine Harvey Weinstein himself battling for its rights. While the trailer looks to deliver the same level of gratuitous, divinely inspired, slo-mo action, I eagerly anticipate Mr. Duffy's remarks on the press circuit (check!). THE BUZZ: The festival circuit loves Ti West's straight-playing 80's horror tribute, which is outfitted with cult actors both new (Greta Gerwig) and vintage (Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov). In fact, House of the Devil's buzz is so strong, we almost totally forgot about director Ti West's dead-on-arrival Cabin Fever sequel (which doesn't seem likely to ever make it to theaters).
