The Buckeye State is the official nickname of Ohio. Many buckeye trees once covered Ohio's hills and plains. The name "buckeye" stems from Native Americans, who called the nut "hetuck," which means "buck eye", because the markings on the nut resemble the eye of a deer (source: statesymbolsusa.org). Ohio became the 17th state of the United States of America in 1803.
