- British novelist and travel writer Peter Fleming was born in London, England. His father was a British army officer and a Member of Parliament. He was the editor of the college newspaper at Eton and attended Christchurch College at Oxford, where he was the editor of the weekly publication "Isis". He traveled to, and stayed for long periods in , China, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Japan and Manchuria, mostly as a correspondent for "The London Times". He served in the British army during World War II (and was, mistakenly, reported to have been killed in Norway in 1940).
