After leaving a stint in the Air Force, he attended the University of New Mexico and received a B.A. in Philosophy and Literature. He then went west and attended the famous UCLA Film School, where his classmates included Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. After a rather non-prolific career, he moved to New York City, where he did work on commercial, corporate, and documentary pieces. In 1982, he and and Frances Tamburro opened their own production company, Gary Young Associates.
