Doug Hayward has been Britain's most famous bespoke tailor for 40 years. In the sixties he was said to have inspired the character of 'Alfie' and ran with, as well as dressing, Britain's jet set including Michael Caine, Rex Harrison, David Niven, Peter Sellers, Terrence Stamp, Bryan Forbes, Roger Moore, Oliver Reed, Michael Winner, Jackie Stewart, Joan Collins, Patrick Lichfield and John Mills. Actors regularly insisted Hayward make and design their on-screen costumes too, and he has prominent billing in The Italian Job. In the 80s, Hayward was responsible for changing the look of Roger Moore's 007 from wide lapels and safari jackets to the far more classic wardrobe he sported in For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy and A Vie To A Kill. Hayward regularly flew to Hollywood where he made suits for Kirk Douglas, Tony Bennet, Charlton Heston, James Coburn and many more.
Later, Hayward was the inspiration for the central character in the novel The Tailor of Panama. His 60s showbiz clients have remained loyal, and he is now kitting out a younger generation including actors Hugh Grant and Nigel Havers, writers AA Gill and Ben Goldsmith, producer Jonathan Sothcott and TV presenter James Ruben.- Art Department
