- It receives word about two imposters: one a princess from Paris, who claims to be the granddaughter of Peter the Great, and the other, an experienced Cossack warrior who claims to be a descendant of the Romanov's.
- After his recovery, Pyotr is no longer interested in Ekaterina. As they grow more and more distant, Queen Elizabeth loses hope of getting an heir to the throne. Her hopes rise when she puts Ekaterina in the sights of Prince Saltykov.
- The 35 year old, unmarried Czarina is unlikely to produce an heir. A German princess arrives as a potential wife to the prince , thus providing a new heir. There is much intrigue, including attempts on the life of the princess.

- After the wedding, Pyotr remains distant from Ekaterina. He comes to believe that by conceiving a child, they would no longer be of use to Queen Elizabeth and would then be cast aside. Pyotr The becomes ill, sending him into a bitter spiral.
- Friederike becomes more and more accustomed to life in the palace. She spends as much time as she can getting to know her fiancé, Pyotr, and trying to win his favor. Some members of the court are displeased with her and try to take matters into their own hands.
- Ekaterina cares less and less about the Queen's opinion of her, flaunting her affairs and misdemeanors. Despite their mutual distaste, she and Pyotr begin to conspire, knowing that the Queen has fallen ill. All they want is to regain rights to the throne and to her child.
- After receiving her new name, Ekaterina is baptised and prepares for her wedding to Pyotr. Little does she know the affairs of her mother begin to jeopardize her chances of remaining safe and prosperous in Russia.
- After the birth of her son, Ekaterina discovers that Pyotr's premonitions are coming true. Elizabeth decides to take the baby and remove them from his care. Ekaterina is forced to watch her child grow from afar. She decides that she will do anything to get her baby back.
- The Queen has fallen ill yet again. Pyotr is in line to succeed her at last. But his rise to power has driven his distaste for Ekaterina into pure hatred. Russians at large have begun to see him as an unfit ruler, and that is causing unrest to spread throughout the kingdom.
- Ekaterina sees a fatal weakness in Pyotr. She seized her opportunity, and with the help of Gregory Orlov, begins a daring effort to seize control of the throne. Her goal: to finally get justice for herself and her broken family.
- Stanislaw the Second, King of Poland, meets with Ekaterina to discuss relations between the two nations. Grigory returns, but brings along an illness within him. He, along with his brother, seek a treatment. Pavel Petrovich continues his lessons with Semyon Andreevich and inquires about the fate of his father. A Turkish ambassador makes his way to St. Petersburg.
- Grigory denies the significance of his illness. The Turkish ambassador arrives, bearing many gifts for the Empress. She denies them, sending a message to Sultan Mustafa. Alexey Orlov pleads with the Empress to accept a rare breed of horse from the Turks but later attains it by his own means. Count Panin deals with the Turkish ambassador in the shadows.
- A brilliant party ensues the palace and the nobles dance merrily amongst themselves. Anna Petrovna storms in, bringing along with her a deadly black small pox disease. Luckily, no one else is infected, but the fate of Anna is uncertain. Count Panin falls deeper into his gambling vice. Ekaterina's younger son arrives at the palace, but disappoints her. Pavel and Alexey become friends.
- Russia battles the Ottoman empire, and their chances seem slim. In the meantime, Ekaterina considers moving the remains of Peter the 3rd to a more honorable place.
- Ekaterina makes arrangements for Grigory's leaving of the palace. She confesses her love for Lieutenant Potemkin, urging him to come back form the battlefront. Three princesses from Denmark make their way to St. Petersburg. Pavel makes acquaintance with them, but Ekaterina has the final say.
- A few years have passed. Pavel's new wife turns out to be unfaithful. Girgory Orlov goes mad. Ekaterina finds a German bride for Pavel. Discouraged by his late lover, Pavel does not expect to fall for the new princess. However, they fall for one another, get married, and have a child. Ekaterina takes the child, but later realizes her wrongdoing. Peter the Great's monument is finally complete.
