- Oysters were once so plentiful in the Chesapeake Bay that sailors feared running aground on the huge, reef-like beds that rose out of the water. Today however, over-harvesting and disease have pushed the native Virginia oyster to the brink of disappearing from these troubled waters forever. Fighting to save both the Chesapeake's native oyster population, and in turn, their own way of life, a new generation of water-men and scientists has embraced the practice of sustainable oyster farming, or aquaculture, to not only save their industry, but also to clean up the Bay at large. The Chesapeake is dying, and many here believe that the humble oyster may be one of its unlikely saviors.
- Gilbert Klingel was a early naturalist and explorer of the Chesapeake Bay region. He wrote three books, was an underwater diver and built one of the bay's first diving bells, and later built a shipyard on Gwynn's Island, Virginia. National Geographic did an underwater photography project with Klingel titles,"One Hundred Hours Under the Chesapeake". Klingel became famous for several en-devours, one of which was building 30 - 75 foot boats with steel hulls, and building them by hand. The producers of this biographical film found hundreds of photos and film from the 1930s and the 1950s to bring Klingel's life and work to the public.
- Win Goodier, chef and owner of Ware River Culinary, serves as host of the film and explores the stories of people, places and foods for a unique Bay-to-Table experience. Once an Eastern Shore waterman, Win is a trained culinary expert with over thirty years' experience as an executive chef and a culinary educator. He was recently awarded the President's Medallion Award from the American Culinary Federation. Now, Win would like to share his love of the Bay and his culinary experience with the film's audience Travel with Win and explore a waterman's workday on the river then discover the secrets for preparing the day's catch with some of the best chefs in Virginia. Many culinary secrets of coastal catching and cooking will be disclosed during this filming as well as some insight on new, nontraditional coastal dishes.
