Ruth Etting was a very popular singer--selling a butt-load of records back in the day. However, her film career never took off. Part of it could have been because she didn't have the typical leading lady looks and part of it could be because of her insane private life--which was dramatized in "Love Me or Leave Me" (with Doris Day playing Etting). Because of her ex-boyfriend's behaviors and very unsavory reputation, this torch singer apparently had few offers from Hollywood. However, this short is one of her few forays onto the silver screen--and it didn't present Ruth very well. That's because she very, very ably sings two songs, there is no plot nor much action. She simply walks onto screen and sings two numbers. In other words, it's like playing one of her records! By the way, this film erroneously has the copyright listed as MCMXXXIX (that's 1939)--but it actually appeared in 1929. One X too many! But, for 1929, it did have incredibly good sound quality.
