Judy at 8. In just ten years time she'll have a mini "Juvenile" Oscar!Editor's Note: With Anne-Marie in grad school we're taking it easier on her for 2016. After her invaluable deep dives into Katharine Hepburn with "A Year With Kate" and female directors in "Women's Pictures" something much shorter but reliably tuneful for you each Wednesday morning in '16: Judy Garland numbers!
Anne Marie returning to you. Welcome to a new series exploring Judy Garland through the music she made famous and the songs that made her a star. Before she was Judy Garland, Frances "Baby" Gumm was the youngest of a three sister Vaudeville act. The child of Vaudeville performers, a family story states that she made her stage debut at 30 months singing "Jingle Bells." She was so entranced by the footlights that her father had to remove her after she sang the song - 7 times.

He rolled into town on a motorcycle with some buddies and wound up in a jam session with the house band. Springsteen, wearing a leather vest and a bandana around his neck, played “I’m On Fire” from his 1984 album “Born In The U.S.A.,” but when the band asked him to play “Pink Cadillac,” the rock star said he couldn’t remember the words to his hit song, recalled Denny Orr, the rhythm guitarist for the house band. Orr also said that things “went nuts” in the bar...

Rise of the Planet of the Apes comes out this week and we're excited to see it. Those of you who have been following the Pop Culture Passionistas know by now about our very strong allegiance to the ape and monkey worlds. First to get our definitions straight for all the smarty pants out there, we know man is a primate. But for our purposes here, we are focusing on the furry, non-verbal kind — monkeys and apes.
It's true we never met (or watched on TV or in a theater) a monkey we didn't like. But there are a few pop culture primates that hold a special place in our hearts. Here is our list of the top ten.

Imagine how happy two monkey loving girls where when Ross on Friends got a pet monkey. The Capuchin became the paleontologist's companion for part of one season,...

Three morsels of news featuring a few of my favorite TV actors broke this week. Adrienne Palicki from "Friday Night Lights" is going to be the new Wonder Woman for that rumored-to-be-dreadful David E. Kelly pilot! Kristen Bell somehow snagged a show with Don Cheadle!! And, finally, in the biggest non-news news of the week, the Science Channel will be re-airing "Firefly" in its entirety starting March 6. Fresh on the scene to report on this non-news, "Entertainment Weekly" strong-armed Nathan Fillion (currently snarkily smarming his way into America's hearts on "Castle") into admitting that he would shimmy into those tight pants and play Captain Malcolm Reynolds again.
But you know, I'm not dying for more Mal (blasphemy!!!), because Nathan Fillion will always find work. Ditto when it comes to the tiny Bell and the Amazonian Palicki. They are such stuff as stars are made on. It's the supporting cast from...
