Quotes

  • Bruce Foster : You're young. You have your whole life ahead of you. You know where you're going. Or, maybe you're a searcher. You're pursuing a career. You're busy. You're mired in decadence and sloth, just killing time, numbing your brain.

    [pause]

Bruce Foster : When are you going to marry? Start a family?

    Peggy Wilson : Someday.

Bruce Foster : Someday? *Some*day? *Some*day may be too late.

  • Bruce Foster : Here I am in the gutter. Now you want to lie down along side of me.

  • Red Moran, City Desk Editor : Oh, this finishes you. I can't save you from the managing editor's axe any more, Bruce. Zimmer is off his nut!.

Bruce Foster : Oh, Zimmer! What do I care about him? Tell him to take his dirty rag and wipe his windshield with it.

  • Bruce Foster : [to Peggy]  Why? Please tell me why people will take a beautiful emotion like love, and do everything they can to kill it? They walk up to an altar and say, "I love you. I'll honor you. I'll obey you." Then what? "Gimme', gimme', gimme! You're mine. Think for me, work for me, live for me, die for me. Die for me while you live for me!" That's it, my girl. They strangle each other's identity. You'll do it all over again.

  • Red Moran, City Desk Editor : [Foster has returned to the "Reflector" office, even though he knows he's been fired]  Don't try to kid me. You know you're fired. You've been to every paper in town trying to get a job. You're all washed up, fella. Goodbye, and good luck.

Mr. Zimmer, Editor of 'The Reflector' : You'll need it, Foster. And plenty of it. There isn't a newspaper in this country that'll put you to work.

[starts to walk away; Foster runs after him]

Bruce Foster : Hey, listen, Zimmer. It wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been drinking. And I'm through drinking.

Mr. Zimmer, Editor of 'The Reflector' : Foster, you're an unreliable, irresponsible, egotistical drunken washout.

Bruce Foster : But I'm trying to tell you I won't take another drink!

Mr. Zimmer, Editor of 'The Reflector' : You haven't got what it takes to stay away from drinking! You'll drink every time you've got a big job to do. Every time something happens that needs all your energy, until you're a busted, broken-down soak. You're through. But you'll be consoling yourself. You'll be calling yourself a journalist with a capital "J". Hah! Sure, "Journalist"... you're just an educated cluck! Now get outta' here and stay out!

  • Bruce Foster : [cringing as he looks at the clock]  Twelve o'clock and not a parsnip buttered.

  • Bruce Foster : [after making a dinner date with Peggy, then leaving to look for a job]  Whither thou goest, I go. Your menu shall be my menu. Your lamb chop shall be my lamb chop. Farewell, fair lady, I go to slay a dragon.

    [he turns toward the door]

Peggy Wilson : Good luck, good knight.

[he turns and takes a sweeping bow, then exits]
