radio broadcaster: Ladies and gentlemen, due to circumstances beyond our control, the regular music critic and program commentator on our symphony hour is unable to be with us tonight. However, we have just received word from a Mr. Robert Benchley that he would be glad to pinch-hit. Mr. Benchley is not a music critic, but he claims to be an enthusiastic listener and to have taken piano lessons as a child.

Lesser Benchley Short
Music Made Simple (1938)
* (out of 4)
Robert Benchley has made some nice short but he's also made some horrid ones and here's the perfect example of that. A music expert calls off a gig so Benchley must stand in for him on the radio and sure enough he wastes no time making a fool of himself. Some of Benchley's worst shorts have him playing an idiot who gets into a bad situation and makes things even worse. You can see an example of this in OPENING DAY where he plays a Mayor who gets in over his head throwing out the first pitch at a baseball game. These two shorts have the same gimmick as Benchley just goes on and on and on in terms of talking and nothing he says makes any sense. This plot doesn't work in either film and they're both extremely boring, unfunny and hard to sit through even though the running time is eight minutes.
