The title refers to the common exclamation "Suffering Catfish!" that dates backs to the 19th century to a similar expression "Suffering Moses!" Another variation on the expression was used by another cartoon feline, Sylvestor the Cat in the Warner Brothers cartoon shorts, "Suffering succotash!"
Both felines are shown running on all fours, as the cats they are. In later episodes, Tom would usually run upright on his hind legs, as a biped would.
A character's dilemma of conscience, usually shown with both elements, bad (represented by a devil) and good (shown as an angel):was a popular plot element during the era here. But Tom's good side never makes an appearance, only his devilish baser instincts.
The earlier depictions of Tom are more cat-like, as in this cartoon. Both he and Meathead look like cats, down to the tufted fur on their feet. And the sound track uses real cat sounds. Later cartoons show a more of a cat caricature. Same for Jerry, who looks more like a mouse here.
