On the first day of hunting season, Queen is accused of manslaughter when another hunter is fatally shot in the woods. Finally released due to lack of evidence, the bullet having passed through the victim's body, Queen nevertheless insists in remaining to find the hunter's killer and, in the process, gets involved in a case of bribery and illegal gambling.

Police in an upstate New York resort town have declared the death of pianist Bob Dawson a suicide, but his girlfriend, a singer at a local casino isn't convinced - especially because a counterfeit 10-dollar bill was found clutched in his hand. Ellery agrees to become Janine's accompanist to investigate Bob's suspicious death.
