San Sebastian will pay tribute to the filmmaker Photo: Courtesy of San Sebastian Film Festival San Sebastian Film Festival has announced it will pay tribute to Us filmmaker Joseph Losey during its 2017 edition.
The director, who moved to Britain after suffering fallout from the Hollywood witch hunt, became a leading figure in European independent film. His work includes The Servant, Accident and The Go-Between.
His work is divided into three periods: his early period in North American film until the early Fifties, the prestige he achieved in the UK of the Sixties and Seventies and a later, more itinerant stage when he worked for Italian, French and Spanish production.
He made his feature debut in 1948 with The Boy With Green Hair, a parable against war, totalitarianism and intransigence towards difference, produced by Rko. He went on to direct a series of film noirs – The Lawless (1950), The Prowler (1951) and The Big Night...

Drew Barrymore half-sister Jessica Barrymore found dead near San Diego (photo: Jessica Barrymore) Drew Barrymore’s half-sister Jessica Barrymore was found dead in her car early Tuesday, July 29, 2014, in National City, located between San Diego and Chula Vista in Southern California. Jessica Barrymore (née Brahma [Jessica] Blyth Barrymore) would have turned 48 on Thursday, July 31. According to a witness, Jessica Barrymore, who worked at a Petco store, was found reclined in the driver’s seat, with a drink between her legs. White pills were seen scattered on the passenger seat. Despite online rags reporting either that Drew Barrymore’s half-sister committed suicide or died from a drug overdose, the official cause of death hasn’t been announced. As per the Los Angeles Times, an autopsy will be performed in the next few days. In a statement published in the gossip magazine People, Drew Barrymore, 39, said she had "only met her [sister Jessica] briefly." Their father was John Drew Barrymore,...

Joan Lorring, 1945 Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee, dead at 88: One of the earliest surviving Academy Award nominees in the acting categories, Lorring was best known for holding her own against Bette Davis in ‘The Corn Is Green’ (photo: Joan Lorring in ‘Three Strangers’) Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee Joan Lorring, who stole the 1945 film version of The Corn Is Green from none other than Warner Bros. reigning queen Bette Davis, died Friday, May 30, 2014, in the New York City suburb of Sleepy Hollow. So far, online obits haven’t mentioned the cause of death. Lorring, one of the earliest surviving Oscar nominees in the acting categories, was 88. Directed by Irving Rapper, who had also handled one of Bette Davis’ biggest hits, the 1942 sudsy soap opera Now, Voyager, Warners’ The Corn Is Green was a decent if uninspired film version of Emlyn Williams’ semi-autobiographical 1938 hit play about an English schoolteacher,...

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
Battle Royale: The Complete Collection (Anchor Bay) Adapted from Koushun Takami’s polarizing novel (compared by champions and detractors alike as a 21st century version of A Clockwork Orange) and set in a futuristic Japan,...

Palm Noir. Low key black and white in the hot yellow high desert. The Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival has ended. The festival broke records this year with audiences soaking in all of that sun and sin, light and vice, early mornings and existential angst. Murder among the palm trees was actually, quite perfect. Stumbling out of Joseph Losey's revenge-for-father noir, The Big Night (starring a teenage John Drew Barrymore), before 12 noon felt fittingly surreal. By the time the festival closed with a fallen Mickey Rooney offing two crooks on a dark Malibu beach (Richard Quine's Drive A Crooked Road), it all seemed so terribly normal. If, at that point, Gloria Grahame had attempted to steal my coat in a cafeteria (a la The Glass Wall), I would have simply handed it to her. This was my third year presenting films...

Drew Barrymore's actor father John Drew Barrymore has died at the age of 72. No information was released about the cause of death or where in Los Angeles he died. But in a statement issued by her publicist yesterday, Drew said, "He was a cool cat. Please smile when you think of him." John D. Barrymore was part of an acting dynasty that included his father, John Barrymore, and his father's siblings, Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. He had a sporadic film career that began with Hollywood films in the 1950s including The Big Night and While The City Sleeps. Yet he also possessed a rebellious streak that led to numerous scrapes with the law, friends and family, including a long estrangement from Drew and her brother John. At various times he was reported to be living like a hermit or a beggar, and Drew once said in an interview that there were times when she did not know where her father was.
