Last Minute Reprieve From Governor......
redryan6424 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
WE WERE MUCH younger then! Of course, we can't say we were older 62 years ago; but, being a boomer meant that one was around for the full flowering of this new, upstart medium of television and many a classic, ground breaking series saw the light of day with our bearing witness.

SO IT IS that CBS gave us MEET MILLIE, an adaptation of a successful Radio series. It involved Millie Bronson, Brooklyn born Secretary, who has romance with the big Boss' son. The shows episodes are built around the trials and tribulations of such a cross class relationship, period!

THAT'S IT AND that's all. Sustauining four full seasons on such a thin plot line was indeed an homage to the series' good writing, great casting, characterization and, lest we forget, its ability to tickle our funny-bone.

AND SPEAKING OF the cast, we had: Beautiful, talented and versatile, Elena Verdugo (Millie Bronson), Florence Hallop (Mrs. Bronson-Millie's Mother), Marvin Kaplan (Alfred-Neighbor), Roland Winters (J.R. Boone-Boss), Ross Ford (J.R. Boone, Jr.-Millie's beau) and Isabel Randolph (Mrs. Boone).

GOING OUT LIVE over the "Tiffany Network", CBS, a show such as this was the equivalent of doing a new Broadway Show every week; albeit done in a very scaled down version.

ONE DISTINCTION THAT this series has that no other has, other than one has is its extreme popularity. At the occasion of the announcement that the show would be canceled, the public outcry was so monumentally overwhelming that the powers that be at the Columbia Broadcasting System changed their collective, bottom line minds and reinstated MILLIE and her friends.

WE DO RECALL that the week that they were supposed to be off, the cast was called out on stage, they thanked everyone and then 'decided' that they would repeat a previous story (again done live). The following week's installment found Millie & J.R. Boone, Jr. walking down the aisle together; only to have the erstwhile secretary back out of the Marriage at the last moment! (Well, if they got hitched, there'd be no more plot line to follow!)

OH, YEAH-JUST for the record, the only other Television series (that we know of) to be saved from the ax in such a manner was THE LAW AND MR.JONES (Four Star Prod./ABC, 1960-62); which starred James Whitmore.

Real antique, but the casting was SO good

This is a real antique, but the casting was so good that two of the supporting characters were still working just a few years ago. Marvin Kaplan, who is still turning up in guest shots, and Florence Halop, who was one of the bailiffs on Night Court. Elena Verdugo is a lovely lady who also had a part in Robert Young's Doctor show, as his nurse. This show was pretty basic, the usual boy-girl type thing, but the comic abilities of Millie' mother, Florence Halop, and the neighbor boy, Marvin Kaplan, kept it pretty lively. I don't really know what the title had to do with it. This type of comedy is still with us; just maybe not as good as they were. Or maybe we are just more sophisticated.
