We’re just a few days away from seeing the Us and Canada launch of Disney Plus, and as well as offering subscribers access to much of the Mouse House’s decades-spanning catalog, the platform has a fair bit of original content ready to go live in the next few weeks.
Perhaps the most hyped up project coming out this month is The Mandalorian. The first episode of the Star Wars spinoff show (titled “Chapter One”) is scheduled for release on November 12th to coincide with the launch.
Moreover, the live-action Lady and the Tramp remake will be made available on the same day, along with the holiday comedy Noelle and the first episode of the Toy Story spinoff series Forky Asks a Question (titled “What is Money?”). And speaking of Pixar, Disney Plus will also be home to their short film series SparkShorts, which kicks off with the release of “Purl,...

“It was often thought that nostalgia was a bad thing,” Jeff Goldblum intones in his new Disney Plus documentary series, “The World According to Jeff Goldblum.” “It was thought to be an illness. But nostalgia can be a potent psychological force for uplifting.”
He’s talking, here, about ice cream. “It’s like a time machine,” he says, sounding like Don Draper describing a photo carousel, “this lovely sweet treat, in that it can take us back to a time when we were happy, when we first enjoyed it.” But he could as easily be providing the pitch for Disney Plus itself. The streamer, which launches Nov. 12, promises viewers something that delighted them in youth no matter what their age now: The Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar libraries are represented, with “The Simpsons” and National Geographic TV brand thrown in for good measure. Disney+ has ordered a six-part non-fiction series about the School of American Ballet in New York City from Imagine’s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.
The series, “On Pointe,” marks the first time the famed 85-year-old Lincoln Center-based school will open its doors to cameras, allowing for access to its facility, classes, faculties and students.
According to Disney, “On Pointe” will capture a “year in the life” of the young students of the School of American Ballet (Sab). Shot in true vérité, observational style, “On Pointe” will follow Sab students through their audition process, training, and home and school lives, including their preparation for New York City Ballet’s annual performances of George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker,” on the Lincoln Center stage.

If you were hoping to binge Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian” straight through — or any of the other Disney+ TV series that will be available when the streaming service launches Nov. 12 — then you are out of luck, because Disney plans to drop episodes weekly on the forthcoming platform.
During D23Expo in Anaheim, Calif. on Friday, “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” creator/co-showrunner Tim Federle told TheWrap his super-meta show would release its 10 episodes on a weekly basis. And a Disney+ spokesperson confirmed to us Saturday that all the streaming service’s series will follow this same format.
Along with Favreau’s live-action “Star Wars” series and “Hsmtmts,” other original shows that will have their first episodes available at launch on Disney+ include “The World According to Jeff Goldblum,” the Kristen Bell-produced “Encore” and short-form Pixar collection “Forky Asks a Question.”

Disney created the biannual D23 Expo in Anaheim a decade ago as pure fan service, and the fans loved Disney for it. So when it came time to present upcoming programming for Disney+, the streaming service that will house all things Marvel and Star Wars and Pixar and Muppets and Disney animation, D23 was the natural launching pad.
However, while those fandoms are the initial target, the biggest audience for this in-depth preview may be those who didn’t see the latest Avengers installment in its first weekend, or perhaps have yet to see it at all. While fans were generously served in the 90-minute presentation, the heart of the Disney+ pitch is the familiar faces and theatrical quality will justify its $6.99 monthly cost for anyone — even if you’d rather do your taxes than go to Disneyland.
Jeff Goldblum hosts “The World According to Jeff Goldblum,” a new series from National Geographic.

In “Rocketman,” Taron Egerton as Elton John steps right out of rehab, brushes himself off and then goes on stage to thousands of glistening fans at a concert at Dodger Stadium, smacking a baseball into the bleachers as he stands atop his piano.
“Rocketman” is a jukebox musical fantasy that takes many liberties, bends the timeline and overall has a lot of fun. But Elton did play at Dodger Stadium during two shows on Oct. 25 and 26 in 1975. And he really did knock it out of the park in those performances.
The shows were a huge deal, as they were the first to be performed in nearly a decade at Dodger Stadium since The Beatles played there in 1966. According to John’s website, they were the largest performances by a single artist of their time, with more than 100,000 people in attendance across the two nights, “including Elton’s parents, relatives, office workers,...

DJ Snake, Cardi B, Ozuna and Selena Gomez visit eerie and vivid realms in their video for collaborative single “Taki Taki.” Director Colin Tilley follows the artists around a stormy world filled with raging storms, flowing lava and women-filled pits. Film director whose work included the wartime masterpiece Western Approaches
The director Pat Jackson, who has died aged 95, was best known for the semi-documentary war film Western Approaches (1944). This neglected classic – a feature-length portrait of the Battle of the Atlantic – was shot under the auspices of the Ministry of Information's Crown Film Unit and predominantly filmed at sea under hazardous conditions. The shoot's logistical nightmares were compounded by the vast size of the Technicolor camera. Jackson himself devised the story of the imminent convergence of a German U-boat and an English ship which is on the way to save a group of comrades in a lifeboat.
Jackson was in his late 20s when he shot Western Approaches with the outstanding cameraman Jack Cardiff and a cast of amateur actors. It was a remarkable achievement that remained unsurpassed throughout the writer-director's lengthy career. The film was well received in Britain and...
