Unusual for many of the Robin Hood movies, some scenes were actually filmed in the real Sherwood Forest.
Executive producer Walt Disney personally chose Joan Rice to play Maid Marian. Richard Todd was never overly convinced of Rice's credentials, feeling that a more experienced actress would have been better in the role.
This was Disney's first take on the Robin Hood legend, which was made with British funds that had been frozen during World War II.
Originally Bobby Driscoll was going to be featured in the film as a boy in Robin's camp, but he was unable to appear in the film because he had violated British labor laws with his appearance in "Treasure Island".
