Before the deluge of summer blockbusters – superhero, sci-fi, and otherwise – hit theatres, this week’s film slate asks us to remember the meat and potatoes of cinema going.
Yes, we’re back in drama territory with two new releases this week.
Get your Harrison Ford fix with this weekend’s The Age of Adaline, a romance in the same vein as Tuck Everlastingor The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Throughout the film, Adaline (“Gossip Girl”’s Blake Lively), who discovers that she’s immortal, struggles with love and loss while she remains ageless. Canadian actor Anthony Ingruber, Harrison Ford, and Michiel Huisman also star.
Russell Crowe returns to his native Australia for his directorial debut, The Water Diviner. The film follows an Australian farmer (Crowe) who travels to Turkey after the First World War in search of his sons who went missing in the Battle of Gallipoli. Jai Courtney (Divergent...

In the world of movie poster collecting, title trumps everything. A mediocre half-sheet for Casablanca or a lobby card for The Wizard of Oz will sell for thousands whereas an exquisite piece of graphic design for an obscure Czech drama can be picked up for peanuts. For good reason of course: people want movie posters to remind them of the movies they love. But I am always endlessly impressed by the bottomless well of superb design and illustration that is out there for films that have been all but forgotten. As a random example, this week the French poster dealer Dominique Besson released 171 posters for auction on eBay, and, though many of them are for well-known films I was struck by the fact that many of the most eye-catching designs were for quite obscure French films from the 40s and 50s. And all can be picked up for a song.

HollywoodNews.com: Jackson Browne, on tour, stopped at the Oceana event in Watermill on Saturday night and played a full acoustic set on guitar and keyboards, by himself. The songs included “Running on Empty,” “The Pretender,” “Before the Deluge,” and “Rock Me On the Water.” At the end, he said he no longer cared what people thought about the fact that he’d written the Eagles’ most famous song, “Take It Easy,” and played it.
Oceana is the brainchild of Lois Robbins and Susan Rockefeller, with Keith Addis, designed to raise money for ocean conservancy. Could anything be more timely? Caroline Hirsch, of Caroline’s Comedy Club., is also very involved, as are Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen. I ran into Charlie Walk, Kathy Schenker, Jane Rose, Fred Davis, John Howard, Jill Brooke, and Jackson’s girlfriend, Dianna Cohen, an artist from L.A. who created a...

A wonderful guy who I had the honor of knowing and working with died suddenly yesterday at age 49. We never know how long we have on this planet. Here's an Earth Day playlist of songs about taking better care of Planet Earth, better care of one another and better care of ourselves. R.I.P. Ron Scalera, a great man who really loved his family, his work at CBS and his music. Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology) - Marvin Gaye The Last Resort - The Eagles Hands All Over - Soundgarden Earth Song - Michael Jackson Monkey Gone To Heaven - The Pixies Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell Down To Earth - Peter Gabriel Nature's Way - Spirit (Nothing But) Flowers - Talking Heads Earth Anthem - The Turtles Don't Go Near The Water - The Beach Boys Don't Drink The Water - Dave Matthews Band Cuyahoga - R.E.M....
