In the private detective's office, Dane Clark blows a line. He was supposed to say, "He knew!" but instead says, with emphasis, "I knew." Realizing his mistake, he sits down, pauses, then says "He knew," in a much softer tone. The director kept it in.
The viewer is told, after Casey is supposed to have married Phyllis, that he has a motive for killing Gorden to keep the latter's hands off Phyllis' money. But if they are married, Gorden has no way to get at the money as he can no longer marry her.
Mrs. Alicia Brunner says to Casey that he "inferred he had married daughter". She meant "implied"; something a woman of her class and education would have known.
