“Having worked with them on ‘Uncut Gems,’ I was excited about anything that they were doing,” says “The Curse” cinematographer Maceo Bishop when asked about executive producers Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie approaching him for the Showtime drama series. “And then they said, ‘We’re doing this with Nathan Fielder,’ and I didn’t know Nathan’s work that well. I’d heard his name before, so I did some research and I was like, ‘This is a really interesting combination of aesthetics and ideas coming together.’ The conversation started and almost right away, Benny said ‘To Catch a Predator’ and ‘Candid Camera’ were two of the references for us.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Movie lovers know Steven Seagal for his rise to fame through the ’80s and ’90s as a B-movie action star. With hits like Under Siege, Above the Law, and Marked for Death, fans know him well. Unfortunately, Seagal has a history of behavior issues on set. Here’s what one director said about Seagal being a “pain in the neck” to work with.
Director Andrew Davis said Steven Seagal was a ‘pain in the neck’
Director Andrew Davis worked with Steven Seagal for Seagal’s 1988 debut, Above the Law. The director and actor worked together four years later in 1992’s Under Siege. Before Seagal was cast in Above the Law, he worked as a martial arts instructor in Hollywood. Michael Ovitz, an agent who was also Seagal’s student then, thought Seagal would be ideally suited for the leading role.

It only took a couple of decades, but Academy Award-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson is finally making her Hollywood dreams come true, with a star turn on a prominent sitcom.
“This is literally what I’ve been wanting to do for 20-something-odd years,” Henson said in a recent interview with TheWrap. Of course, she’s referring to her turn in ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” in the show’s second season where she plays Vanetta, the unreliable, outrageous mother of steadfast and loyal protagonist Janine (Quinta Brunson).
“I’m grateful for the career I’ve had, as opposed to starting as a comedic actress and proving myself as dramatic. But now this is easy, because this is just what I do.”

Yes, Jake Szymanski has directed episodes of Saturday Night Live, and yes, he has an improv background. But even those experiences didn’t fully prepare him to direct Jury Duty. Nothing could.
Amazon Freevee’s comedy, which follows a regular guy who doesn’t realize he’s part of a fake jury trial, might have its roots in hoax shows like Candid Camera and Punk’d, but its scope is even more audacious. For three weeks of filming, Ronald Gladden, the juror who was hoaxed, was fully immersed in the show. He was sequestered with fake jurors, and he even surrendered his phone so that he couldn’t contact the outside world. That meant the creative team had to build a full-time fictional environment. Szymanski wasn’t just directing a few scenes. He was directing Ronald’s entire life.

Exclusive: Shout! Factory has snapped up North American distribution rights to Candid Camera, the hidden-camera show known for its decades-long run as a television pioneer.
The multi-year agreement encompasses thousands of episodes from 1960 to 2013, with the first 100 hand-picked classics heading to streaming service Shout! Factory TV later this year. Shout will have exclusive digital and broadcast rights to the series in the U.S. and Canada, and the company has pledged to announce more plans soon.
Candid Camera premiered in 1948, during the infancy of television as a medium, and went on to produce episodes for CBS, ABC, NBC, HBO and TV Land. Its run on CBS, from 1960 to 1967, was perhaps its most indelible. It introduced the hidden camera concept to television, and creator, producer and host Allen Funt has frequently been called the inventor of reality TV. The show’s payoff included one of TV’s most enduring taglines: “Smile,...

Phyllis George, one of the first leading female sports broadcasters, died on Friday due to complications from a blood disorder. She was 70.
George’s career in front of the camera began in 1974 as the co-host of “Candid Camera” on CBS. That same year, she then joined the “NFL Today” team alongside veteran sports braodcasters Brent Musburger, Irv Cross and Jimmy the Greek. With the team, she hosted pre-game discussions and analysis before National Football League games.
She was one of the first women to be a major player in the sports TV world. She also helped cover horse races, like the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
In 1978, George became the host of People magazine’s self-titled entertainment show. She then went on to co-anchor the CBS Morning news and interviewed many noteworthy guests, including former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
George won the Miss America beauty pageant in 1971, and before that she was crowned Miss Texas.

Do you still shudder at the thought of hearing “The Weakest Link” host Anne Robinson say: “You are the weakest link… Goodbye”? If so, Netflix has another seriously twisted British reality show for you. It’s called “The Push,” and it sounds like the most messed up reality show since “Survivor” (or maybe that crazy Russian one that allowed murder). Arriving stateside via Netflix later this month, “The Push” is a social experiment show led by “psychological illusionist” Derren Brown. Using actors and elaborate scenarios, Brown tests the moral mettle of poor unsuspecting contestants by trying to manipulate them into committing murder.

Don’t worry, Supergirl fans, you’re not losing your collective minds.
Though Monday’s installment of the CBS drama seems to take a giant step backwards, storytelling-wise, it’s merely the result of last week’s decision to swap “How Does She Do It?” with “Livewire” in the wake of terrorist attacks in Paris.

"Candid Camera" debuted 67 years ago this August, and though the show is no longer on the air, it lives on in an avalanche of copycats, having created a winning template that's still used to this day. Producers create scenarios, and hidden cameras capture reactions to those absurd situations from unsuspecting people. Later, the cameras are revealed to the marks, often by revealing the show's title or tagline — though often you can see people thinking something like, I have never heard of that show in my life. What follows is an overview of the the reality format that keeps finding new life —or new lows — on various networks and with various twists. But it all shares the same DNA.

David Spade is finally making an attempt to return to TV. Fameless is his next project with TruTV which will be a mix of Punked and Candid Camera. The show will be a reality prank show that will feature guests who believe they will be on a different game/reality show. However, a sketch will be written around them and shock the poor souls before they are informed that they were pranked. Each season will have 8 episodes, but we have no time line when the first season starts up.
I love that David is taking a risk. It will be interesting to see how they will pull this off Hopefully his network will be giving them a decent budget to work with to make the show better. It seems like his idea will be fun, so as long as TruTV backs it enough-i think David Spade has a legit chance at a comeback.

Apparently flying high on its very first pair of Golden Globe wins, thanks to original series Transparent, emerging television force Amazon has announced that it has hired on a sizable name to helm yet another new series: Woody Allen. The new project will mark the writer and director’s first journey to small-screen creation – though, in his early years, Allen did write for shows like Stanley and Candid Camera – and although the news that Allen is set to work in a new medium is interesting, it comes with a caveat. Namely, that Woody Allen has no idea what the hell his new show is going to be about. The Untitled Woody Allen Project (Or Whatever The Good Goddamn We Feel Like Calling It) has already earned itself a full series order from Amazon, but neither Allen nor his new network have any clue whatsoever what the series will be about. Sounds...

Woody Allen is heading back to TV. Or, er, well kinda. A near lifetime after getting his start as a writer on The Tonight Show and Candid Camera, the Annie Hall director is set to write and direct an entire season of an untitled project for Amazon Studios. The show is set to stream exclusively through their Amazon Prime membership sometime in 2016. There are no further details on cast and story at this time. This news comes on the heels of Amazon's first awards with Golden Globes wins for Jill Solloway's exceptional Transparent, about a transgender woman played by Jeffery Tambor (who also won) and his adult children. With the clunky if good-spirited Mozart In The Jungle from Jason Schwartzman, Roman Coppola and Paul Weitz...

If only there were cameras rolling when Anne Hathaway once went to Matthew McConaughey's house for a party. It would have been perfect for Punk'd or Candid Camera. At last night's American Cinematheque tribute to McConaughey, Hathaway said the two became friends while filming the upcoming Interstellar. "I have a story and it's kind of embarrassing," the Les Misérables actress said. It sure is. McConaughey invited Hathaway and her husband Adam Shulman to his L.A.-area home for a party. "My husband and I drive up. It's a Sunday. It's a beautiful day," Hathaway said. "There are no cars around and we thought, Ok, we're on time....

Nino, an Italian film maker with a strong resemblance to Federico Fellini, is in an artistic crisis. Every new work is, for him, an artistic crisis. So he goes to bed with a multitude of women, seeking ideas and stimulation, feeding on them both humanly and artistically. Nino is sexually impotent until he gets a good idea, and then he's hellfire. But his sexual partners, all artists in their own right, are not satisfied. Rallied by a wealthy feminist American widow, they decide that to be a muse is to be exploited. So they exact revenge by making a movie of Nino's life and fantasies, Candid Camera-Style. Thus unfolds 'Six Passionate Women' by Mario Fratti, a play inspired by the playwright's personal acquaintance with Fellini, whom he covered closely as a journalist in the late 1950s. It combines a serious disquisition on the creative mind with recurring themes of Fratti's plays betrayal,...

After seven years of rolling around in the muck, Dirty Jobs‘ Mike Rowe is cleaning up his act.
His new gig, CNN’s Somebody’s Gotta Do It, is decidedly less messy than his popular Discovery Channel series, which was cancelled in 2012. But the spirit is the same: The first episode — which airs Wednesday at 9/8c — manages to squeeze Rowe into a wetsuit and dangle him 30 feet from a Vegas theater’s ceiling to illustrate a former stagehand’s passion for production.
The hour-long premiere also includes a visit to a Missouri hair museum; the second episode introduces a man...

Joan Alexandra Molinsky was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Barnard College. As she developed her comic act, her agent at the time – Tony Rivers – suggested a name change, so Joan took his last name as hers. She was fired by Rivers as a result. Can we talk?
Whenever Joan Rivers asked that question, she wasn’t asking permission. Right up until the moment she died at age 81 on Sept. 4 in Manhattan, it was clear that she was going to talk, loudly and often, and you were going to listen.
One of the first truly transgressive female comedians, both on the stand-up circuit and as Johnny Carson’s permanent guest host on The Tonight Show in the 1980s, she was famous for bringing her whip-smart, acid-tongued wit to any subject, no matter how off-limits. Another week in Paradise, another week of enjoying the beautiful beaches, the perfect weather, the great activities that the Yucatan peninsula has to offer, and of course, the ups and downs of love and relationships. We begin this week seeing one of my favorite couples in Bachelor history—Graham and Michelle Money. These two serve as a crisp taco shell to wrap this episode, but we will get to that later. I know that Graham and Michelle may not count as a “couple” since they are not romantically involved (anymore), but they are such great friends that it’s fun...

Can TV Land improve on a classic? We’ll find out as a longtime staple of TV and the original reality show, Candid Camera, gets rebooted for the 21st century on TV Land. Candid Camera created the hidden camera concept for TV in 1948 and produced the “Smile! You’re on candid camera!” catchphrase. Versions of the show aired for more than 50 years and inspired countless other similar hidden camera prank shows (like MTV’s Punk’d). TV Land’s new iteration is hosted by Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory) and Peter Funt, son of original Candid Camera creator and host Allen Funt. … Continue reading →

What beats a CNN interview in terms of scoring publicity for your new book? How about a moment of raging indignation followed by a dramatic early exit from a CNN interview?
That seemed to be the prevailing wisdom today when a cantankerous Joan Rivers lost her patience with flighty interviewer Fredricka Whitfield’s line of questioning about whether the 81-year-old comic’s brand of humor ever crosses a line into cruelty.
“You really think Nicki Minaj cares I didn’t like her dress?” Rivers huffed when Whitfield noted that her guest’s work on E!’s Fashion Police is “very mean in some ways.

TV Land is reviving Candid Camera, the network announced today, just in case you weren't already living in fear of constantly being YouTube pranked somehow or being trapped in the middle of an Improv Everywhere "scene" where you are unwittingly playing a befuddled bystander. Peter Funt, son of the original show's creator and host Allen Funt, will serve as co-host and executive producer. Hidden-camera shows and the idea of hidden cameras in general have become ubiquitous since Candid Camera's debut in 1948, so now in addition to poking fun at the weird social pressures we all face, it'll also be a commentary on surveillance culture.

Screw America’s Funniest Home Videos. Screw Punk’d. Screw the Jamie Kennedy Experiment (not really, Jkx was amazing). Candid Camera is the Og when it comes to watching people make fools of themselves on national television. And it’s been off the air since 2004. Creator Allen Funt started pranking folks on a radio show called Candid Microphone (doesn’t have the same ring to it, huh?) back in 1947. A year later it moved over to TV, where it was renamed and picked up the most-useful-show-slogan ever: “Smile, you’re on Candid Camera!” Be honest, how many times have you sarcastically said that to someone?...
