The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A group of Jewish holy men are murdered onscreen early in the film by Pompey's soldiers, who throw spears at them.
  • Babies are murdered offscreen by Herod's soldiers and we see one young mother scream hysterically.
  • Herod Antipas literally kicks his dying father, King Herod the Great, away from the throne, and the kick kills him, although he is already dying of a heart attack.
  • Barabbas conducts several raids on the Romans in this film (none of these are mentioned in the Bible; they have been added to the film). One of them-on the Antonia Fortress just before Jesus's Last Supper-results in hundreds of Jewish rebels killed by carefully planned Roman soldiers. Barabbas himself is shot in the leg with an arrow at this point, causing his capture that Pilate wanted.
  • John the Baptist is going to be beheaded: you see the sword going up in the air, in the shadows you can see the sword coming down but you don't see the impact but its implied that his head got cut off.
  • Judas hangs himself in remorse offscreen; Barabbas, who is his best friend in this retelling of the story, discovers his body.
  • Jesus having been flogged or beaten with a whip, a soldier makes a crown of thorns and puts it on Jesus head, Jesus is pushed around, soldiers hammer nails in Jesus hands and feet (implied), Jesus is made fun of (mocked), Jesus is forced to carry a heavy cross - made of wood, Jesus (Crucifixion) and several other men are on crosses.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Herod Antipas is usually seen drinking wine, as is Pilate and Claudia and some Roman soldiers who were preparing Jesus's crown of thorns and cross.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Implying that babies are being murdered, you don't see any baby actually getting killed.
  • Salome asks for the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. She says "I just wants to look at it."
  • Men throwing stones at Mary Magdalene (for committing adultery) but you don't actually see the stones hitting her - up close.
  • The beheading of John the Baptist, happens offscreen. The executioner enters John's prison cell as John is praying, and raises a huge sword and that is all you really see. John's decapitated head is never shown.
