Out today, Baran bo Odar’s German supernatural crime thriller will lure you into its web of family trauma and chilling town secrets...
“This is Winden. Nothing ever happens here”, says Ulrich (Oliver Masucci), a family man who can occasionally be found climbing out the bedroom window of a recent widow after a spot of ‘breakfast’. It might sound like your classic horror-thriller set-up: the small sleepy town hit by a sudden tragedy, but it’s clear from the off-set that despite the very recent disappearance of a young school boy things run much deeper than this. Winden may appear to be a quiet town where nothing happens, but the town’s older residents know something. There is hushed talk of events that happened 33 years ago and the haunted looks on parents’ faces betray a fear that seems to say 'you don’t know the half of it'.

Great love stories live or die by their timing. When do you meet the person? Are they already in a relationship? Is it the right moment for either of you to commit? And that’s just the beginning of the story — timing continues to play a huge role in whether two people can actually make things work, long-term.
So it’s no wonder that “Outlander,” one of TV’s most intriguing love stories, is also obsessed with time, especially in Season 3. This is, of course, a literal obsession, given that this adventure began when former combat nurse Claire (Caitriona Balfe) fell through a crack in reality and found herself transported from 1945 to the 18th Century, where she ends up falling in love with rogue Scotsman Jamie (Sam Heughan).
However, the show is always smartly engaged with the fact that the best characters are those who are changed by events and time,...

Nothing ever happens on Sunday... Hopefully everyone went to see Arrival this weekend. If you're still in the mood for some beautiful first contact sci-fi, this short is for you. It's a very lovely companion to Arrival, but that's all I'll say. On Sunday is a short directed by David Lea, who made this on his own time without any money. Via email, he explains his inspiration: "Way back in 1984 [my dad] hand built a cabin bed for my bedroom and underneath this, made from wood, flashing lights and copper piping, he'd constructed a spaceship cockpit... 31 years later I thought it was past time to repay the favour." Check out the film below. Synopsis from Vimeo: "A man and his dog make their routine walk to the isolated clifftops of Cornwall...but this time they realise they're not so isolated after all." On Sunday is directed by filmmaker David Lea, who has...

This will not be a defense of the Paranormal Activity series. You either like these movies or you don’t. You either appreciate their charms or you find them dreadfully boring. You either dig their slow-burning tension or you hate their reliance on jump scares. You either respect their commitment to an increasingly overblown and confusing mythology or […]

My American Cousin
Written and Directed by Sandy Wilson
Canada, 1985
Sandy Wilson’s My American Cousin is an endearing, semi-autobiographical tale centering on one golden summer in a precocious girl’s life. In 1959 British Columbia, 12-year-old Sandy (Margaret Langrick) lives on a gloriously scenic ranch populated with her family and a group of friends who help out on her father’s cherry orchard. It’s an idyllic setting, but the terminally bored pre-teen is histrionically unimpressed.
“Nothing Ever Happens!” she scrawls in her journal.
But excitement unexpectedly arrives when Sandy’s 17-year-old American cousin Butch (John Wildman) pulls up in a dazzling, red Cadillac convertible. With duck-tail hair, pressed blue jeans, and a pack of cigarettes wrapped in the sleeve of his white t-shirt, he is a walking James Dean clone, which is especially exotic in a town whose theater has yet to play Rebel Without A Cause.

The best of the films I saw last weekend at Polari 2013 was on Saturday afternoon. Polish writer-director Malgorzata Szumowska explores the feelings of a gay priest working in a school for troubled youths in the poignant film In the Name Of.
Trapped by the requirements of his faith with nobody to whom he can turn for a human connection, Adam (Andrzej Chyra, who bears a strong resemblance to Daniel Craig) longs only for the comfort of human embrace. A good man who always has a positive influence on his charges, Adam never does anything wrong, though almost completely unfounded accusations repeatedly result in his transfer to other parishes.
Szumowska peels back the stoic exterior to reveal the depths of longing and loneliness suffered by a man striving to set the highest example of godliness and the tragic unfairness that can result from unfounded suspicions. In the Name Of is a...

“One Armed Dude and Three Moms”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Brilliant. In a season filled with twists, it’s the simple moves that can change the game. After watching his fiancé quit last week, Caleb steps out of the shadows and executes a stunning move at Tribal Council. Nothing ever happens at Tribal Council! When change-ups occur, they usually use the immunity idol. This move involves doing math and realizing it wouldn’t take much to kick out the figurehead. By announcing his vote for Brad in front of everyone, Caleb realizes he can sway the girls’ votes and create a 3-3 tie. Players don’t want to pull rocks, so the odds of taking out Brad are very good. There’s a chance that everyone votes out Caleb, but that still leaves the guys in power. It makes little sense for Katie...

Here's an old-fashioned "creature feature" in the mold of "The Thing," "Critters" and "Gremlins." What sets "Grabbers" apart is a touch of the "diddly aye."
Yes, this time the beast comes ashore in an island town off Ireland. And the locals -- Irish "types" one and all -- have a grand time battling the thing that sucks their faces off in the night.
Ruth Bradley is a fetching Irish national cop, or garda, named Lisa Nolan who has taken temporary duty on Erin Island. The locals can't help but flirt. Even the only other cop on duty during this corner of the summer. But Ciaran O'Shea (Richard Coyle) is a lush and a barely functioning one as it is.
Nothing ever happens here, he tells the new garda girl. Ahh, she says, but "It's always the quiet places where the mad (stuff) happens."
And so it does. A meteor struck...

It’s actually a little embarrassing that I didn’t make the connection between Wes Anderson‘s upcoming Grand Budapest Hotel and the 1932 Best Picture Winner Grand Hotel before. It’s all right there in the names — not to mention the large ensemble casts. Now that Screen Daily has provided a synopsis for Anderon’s flick, the similarities really shine: “The Grand Budapest Hotel tells of a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars and his friendship with a young employee who becomes his trusted protégé. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting, the battle for an enormous family fortune and the slow and then sudden upheavals that transformed Europe during the first half of the 20th century.” In Grand Hotel (which takes place in Berlin), the temporary residents’ goings on are underscored by a permanent resident’s idea that “people come and go. Nothing ever happens...

Broadway is about to get a little extra sparkle in those famous neon lights.
It was recently announced the Twilight musical is officially happening. Before you book your tickets to NYC (or, conversely, get the heck out of Times Square) you should know it’s not expected to have a very long run. Twilight: The Musical will make its off-Broadway debut as a one-night-only staged reading on January 16th, and the proceeds will benefit the charity Blessings in a Backpack.
The most exciting thing about this announcement may be the cast, and the plot teases their characters’ names give us.

Prince Harry has kept a low profile since his arrival in Gila Bend, Ariz., for the second phase of his military training. But on Friday night, he and 29 British men visited the Little Italy Italian Restaurant for dinner, where the prince "ordered the meat lover's pizza, which comes with pepperoni, sausage, bacon and ham," says the restaurant owner, Nino Buccellato. "He ate the whole thing." After a representative called ahead and made a reservation, the group, dressed in street clothes, arrived at 7:30 p.m. and stayed for more than an hour. Quiz: Prince William vs. Prince Harry! Who's Who?...

Varese Sarabande has announced the newest titles in their CD Club series. Among the new releases is a deluxe edition of Marco Beltrami‘s score for Wes Craven’s original Scream film. Only about 12 minutes of music from the horror movie has previously been released on a compilation with the sequel’s score. The new album features more than an hour of music from the film, which introduced Beltrami to a wider audience. One track on the CD is credited to Christophe Beck, who also was just starting out at the time of the film’s release. The album is limited to 2000 copies and is now available to pre-order on Varese’s website, where you can see the full track list and listen to audio clips from the soundtrack. Scream was released in 1996 and it’s cast included Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Jamie Kennedy and Drew Barrymore.

It must be fantastic to be Steven Moffat right now. His first season as Executive Producer of Doctor Who has been exceptionally well received; he’s the writer for the Steven Spielberg produced The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and last night, his new show Sherlock started on BBC One.
Sherlock, an update of the classic Sherlock Holmes novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, stars Benedict Cumberbatch as our eponymous sleuth and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. Last night’s first episode, A Study in Pink, was an update of the very first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet. The update looks so effortless; one imagines it involved a great deal of blood sweat and tears from Moffat. Using key elements from the original story, Holmes is called in by Detective Inspector Lestrade (a put-upon Rupert Graves) to investigate four apparent suicides. Each victim has taken...

Actress Helen Wagner, who played mild-mannered Nancy Hughes on the CBS soap opera "As the World Turns" for more than a half-century and spoke its first words, has died at age 91.She died Saturday, said the show's New York-based production company, TeleNext Media Inc., which didn't say where she died or what was the cause of her death.Wagner opened "As the World Turns" when it premiered on April 2, 1956, with the words: "Good morning, dear." Actor Fess Parker starred as the iconic frontier heroes Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone in the 1950s and 1960s. Parker was also featured in the 1954 sci-fi film classic Them! as pilot Alan Crotty, whose encounter with giant flying ants placed him in a psychiatric ward. His performance in Them! was instrumental in his being cast as Davy Crockett for Walt Disney’s Disneyland television series in the mid-1950s.
Parker was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on August 26, 1924, and was raised on a small farm near San Angelo. He served in the Marine Corps towards the end of World War II, but his height (6′,6) disqualified him as a pilot. He attended the University of Texas after his discharge, and graduated with a degree in history in 1950. He subsequently studied drama at the University of Southern California, and made his stage debut in a production of Mister Roberts in 1951. He soon signed with Warner Bros.

Tired of watching a group of horny male Hollywood-somethings bounce around to various Los Angeles hot spots and make fun of each other while beautiful, half-naked wannabee models-turned-actresses try to have sex with them on the small screen? Don't you think this sort of entertainment deserves the big-screen treatment? Well you may be in luck, as Entourage producer Mark Wahlberg recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the show only has two seasons left under its current contract, and while there could be more seasons of boring plotlines in our future, the possibility of ending it on the big screen is very much alive.
Wahlberg's exact quote: "We'll see; there could be more. But then, a movie." Not much to go on, and this wouldn't be the first television show to tease a potential trip to the big screen, but in reality it is the one that makes the most sense.
