During filming Tommy Kirk was released early from his Disney contract in June 1963. He later recalled, "I was caught having sex with a boy at a public pool in Burbank. We were both young, and the boy's mother went to Walt. I was high all the time. It was a terrible period in my life. So I can understand the studio letting me go."
This marked Annette Funicello's return to Disney after making "Beach Party" (1963) for American International. She would also be cast in the sequel, "The Monkey's Uncle" (1965), which would be the final movie that Disney would cast her in.
There was a , Merlin Jones the Scrambled Egghead, song not included in the movie but instead on the Annette LP album, Muscle Beach Party. This song incorporated parts of the Misadventures of... theme song, some dialogue(with Tommy Kirk), some original dialogue and lyrics. Should have been used as a closing credits song.
Released in the UK as the lower half of a double-bill with "The Three Lives Of Thomasina".
The 41st Live-Action film produced by Disney.
